Android : Exchange Sync On HTC Hero

Sep 27, 2009

I have a new HTC Hero.I am currebtly syncing with Exchange using the Exchange sync app that come with the Hero.I used to us RoadSync from DataViz on my Nokia which was great. There are a couple of features that I miss.

a) I can't set different sync schedules for different times of day lie I can in RoadSync.

b) I can't seem to access the Exchange Global Address List like I could in RoadSync.

So.

1) Does any one have experience of using the Beta of RoadSync on Android. Is it any good ? Does it have the features above ?

2) Can anyone recommend any other Exchange sync apps ?

Also, is there any way to force exchange sync, roadsync or any app for that matter to use a particular connection, i.e. 3G or wifi only ?

HTC Hero :: Sync ALL Exchange Calendars?

Oct 17, 2009

I had no problem setting up my Exchange sync, however I have multiple calendars on my Exchange account (1 account, multiple calendars), but the phone only syncs with one of those calendars. Is there a way to have it sync with ALL the calendars on my exchange account? (And I did go to the calendars selection settings but it only shows one of my exchange calendars.

HTC Hero :: Sync Calendar With Exchange

Dec 2, 2009

I've got my email and calendar syncing with my Exchange server every couple of hours, but if I make a change to an appointment from my PC and want to sync my Hero calendar immediately, how do I force an immediate update? I can refresh my email, but I can't see a calendar refresh option? I worked it out. Just go to home screen, menu, Settings, Data synchronization, Exchange ActiveSync and there's a Sync now button at the bottom of the screen that syncs mail, contacts and calendar when you click it. Perfect. Would be nice if it was a little easier to get to though!

HTC Hero :: Exchange Sync Problems After ROM Update

Sep 21, 2009

I updated my HTC Hero yesterday with the new ROM for Orange handsets. After the update i went back and setup my Exchange ActiveSync settings on the phone, it all seemed to work ok. Initial sync downloaded my emails, contacts and calendar, I then went to change the schedule to 'As item arrives', which is how I normally have the phone set for push emails. I found that when i change this setting the phone is constantly syncing with the server, as soon as it completes a sync it will start syncing again. I left it for about 30 minutes doing this over a wireless connection thinking it might stop eventually, but it didn't.

I have tried deleting the account and setting it up again and also done another factory reset, but as soon as i select 'as item arrives' in the schedule then it does this.

This worked fine before the update, any ideas whats gone wrong? Is there anything i can do to so that the phone only syncs when there is new mail?

Sprint HTC Hero : Exchange Sync Performance W/ 2.1

I've read a few "pre-reviews" of 2.1 and have yet to see any comments on better performance as it relates to syncing w/ Exchange Servers. Can anyone who has 2.1 loaded, that also uses an Exchange Server, comment on performance? I know that with 1.5, even though the settings are dictating the phone to sync upon arrival, there are times where it hasn't synced for more than a day.Just curious to see if this has been improved.

Sprint HTC Hero :: Exchange Sync Bug Or Working As Expected

Nov 20, 2009

When I set my HTC Hero to sync with exchange "As Items Arrive", the phone is constantly synching and therefore my battery drains. Even when I turn off the phone, the phone uis still awake since it is constantly checking/sync-ing with exchange. I was under the impression that by selecting this type of sync, the items would be "pushed" to the device rather than the device constantly checking if there are new messages, contacts, or calendar eventsto sync. Is this expceted behaviour, or is there some other tweak I need to do? By the way, I just updatedmy phone yesterdey to the latest firmware, and the issue still persist.

But when it does the contacts, I get the error "Synchronization is experiencing problems" with no further message to the error. I have tried over WiFi and with the carriers network. This is on a fresh wipe of the device, I have tried deleting and re-adding the exchange account to the device but with the same error. I get approx 6 of my 325 contacts synced.

Sprint HTC Hero :: Exchange Sync - Folder Layout Issues

Sep 17, 2009

This has been one of only a couple of bugbears I'm experiencing with my Hero. While Exchange syncs perfectly for mail, contacts and calendars, it fails to display Outlook folders in the proper way. Does anyone else experience this?

I have something like 20 folders, most of which have subfolders, and then some of those have more subfolders. In Outlook, it's perfect (naturally). On the Hero, it seems to display them almost randomly - certainly not in the hierarchy they should be, or even alphabetically. With 100+ folders (some with the same name), this is a pain when on the move and relying on the phone to give me access to stuff.

Does anyone have a fix for this?

I've tried the 5 day trial of one of the Exchange apps (can't remember the name) but found it clunky and removed double-quick. Don't like RoadSync either. Plus, I don't see why I should pay for an app when the default one should do the job properly.

Also, on the subject of Exchange, is there any way to get tasks to sync? I'm having to use Gmail to "copy" tasks from Outlook (PITA), and don't really want to add a third party app to manage just those.

I guess it's a case of waiting a few months for some kind of update ... or is that me being a little too optimistic?

HTC Hero : Exchange Client Server Conversion Error For Contact Sync

Aug 24, 2009

I've had a quick search and couldn't find any topics exactly the same as the problem I am having.

For the first ten days or so all my contacts were syncing fine on the Hero from my Exchange account. I then added a new contact in Outlook / Exchange and from this point on, every time I sync the exchange contacts it fails with a client / server conversion error in the notifications. I deleted said contact again in Outlook to no avail.

The mail and calendar are syncing fine, and I have an HTC Snap syncing to the same Exchange account on the same network (Orange UK) just fine (I know the latter is Windows Mobile but still...)

Any ideas? Or is there any way I can see a log of some sort to see why it is failing?

Android :: Exchange Calendar Sync

May 13, 2010

I'm new to the android community by less than 24 hours. I got rid of my iphone 3g for the HTC incredible, as so far its been great.I'm looking to have my gmail set up on my HTC using their exchange, or push email (rather than imap). I've got that set up, but had to download a new mail client to do so, as the built in mail client wont allow me to sync my work calendar (only the calendar) though my corporate exchange, and have gmail set up with exchange as well.I was wondering if there is an exchange calendar only app, or an email app that will sync my corporate exchange calendar. I do no like the interface of the email app I downloaded. I would like to use the built in email app with android 2.1 for my Gmail, and a different app to sync only my work calendar.Note, I do not want to sync my work calendar to google calendar, and then to my phone. I'm less than impressed with google calendar, and thats one more hoop to jump through / point of failure.

Android : Sync Outlook W/o MS Exchange

Oct 24, 2010

I am looking for the best way to sync my Outlook with my Droid 2. I am a single user, don't have MS Exchange or Google Apps. I want to be able to update both in Outlook and on my Droid and have them sync.... with the least amount of problems and applications.

I don't mind paying a (moderate) fee, but it seems like TouchDown and some of the other recommended apps require MS Exchange.

2) If I do need MS Exchange, what's the best way for me to do that?

3) I remember reading that the upcoming Droid Pro (for Verizon) will have the inherent ability to sync Outlook and the Droid (I'm not positive but I believe it will) - does this mean that there will be a 3rd party application, or an update to Froyo 2.2, that will be released afterward to allow this with other Droids?

ANY help or suggestions would be appreciated. I've spent hours and hours trying to come up with a solution (as I know others have), and I'm hoping someone can enlighten me.I am leaving on a trip in a few days and I have to get my Outlook synced before I leave.I'm desperate.

Android :: Touchdown & Native Exchange Sync?

Mar 18, 2010

Say you are in your office, sitting at your computer. So you don't need your phone to notify you every time you get an Exchange email, or every time you have an Exchange calendar event, because its all popping up right on your computer screen anyways. But you do still want to receive notifications for your non-Exchange email accounts and calendar events (e.g., Gmail).

Can Touchdown be closed or "turned off" (or maybe just killed using a task killer) while you are at work, so you do not receive notifications about Exchange emails and calendars, but you do still receive notifications for all your other accounts? And then as soon as you leave the office you can just re-load Touchdown so that you start getting phone notifications again for your Exchange account?

Is there an easy way to accomplish this without using Touchdown if you are using just the native Exchange ActiveSync built into Android (sense UI)?

I hate getting notifications on my phone 2 seconds after I've received them in the Outlook on my work computer, so this is why I ask these questions. With BlackBerry (what I currently have, but I want to switch to HTC Incredible) it is easy to manage notifications this way, but I'm curious if I can do it on Android.

Android :: 2.1 Devices Won't Sync With Exchange 2003 SP2

Android :: Outlook Contact Sync - Non Exchange

Jun 9, 2009

I'm a developer writing an application to sync Outlook 2007 contacts with GMail. These are regular local-PST contacts, not Exchange, and yes, for now I'm exclusively focused on Outlook 2007 since that's what I have available. I may look at older versions (which I own) if this one works out. Anyway, I've tried most (all?) of the sync apps and didn't enjoy the experience. I've done the export/import thing and consider that a temporary fix. So I decided to do something about it myself.

The application I have today runs in the background and periodically pulls contact data from both systems. It can identify matches using a variety of prioritized criteria, and it has a way to systematically decide what data needs to be updated in each contact list. It can write changes to both sides. So it's largely done -- except for some decisions about that sync methodology.

The tricky thing about sync is that the GMail and Outlook contact data fields are totally different.

For example, GMail allows unlimited e-mail contacts which are tagged as Home, Work, and Other. By contrast, Outlook only supports three e-mail addresses, and they're not tagged at all. What should a sync app do if the GMail account has four addresses, but only three Outlook slots to store them?

A different example: GMail also supports unlimited phone numbers, also tagged with about six categories. On the other hand, Outlook can handle sixteen phone numbers, each with a fixed category. Some are a bit odd, like Radio Telephone. What should the sync app do if the GMail account has three Work numbers? Outlook only has Business 1 and Business 2...

Granted, these are what programmers call "edge cases" -- they won't apply to most users. But I'm hoping to find some people with large, complex Outlook address books who will weigh in with opinions about how they'd like problem cases handled.

Here is a comparison of the contact data in each system (exlcuding largely similar fields, and excluding the vast array of Outlook fields that simply have no GMail equivalent)--

E-mail Addresses:
GMail: Unlimited, tagged as Home, Work, Other
Outlook: 3, not tagged at all

Phone Numbers:
GMail: Unlimited, tagged as Home, Work, Mobile, Work Fax, Home Fax, Pager, Other
Outlook: 16, one each of Primary, Mobile, Car, Home, Home 2, Business, Business 2, Assistant, Callback, Company, Business Fax, Home Fax, Pager, Other, Radio Telephone, TTY/TDD

Postal Addresses:
GMail: Unlimited, tagged as Home, Work, Other
Outlook: 4, one each of Home, Mailing, Business, Other

IM Addresses:
GMail: Unlimited, tagged as GoogleTalk, AIM, Yahoo, Skype, QQ, MSN, ICQ, Jabber
Outlook: 1, untagged (probably should equate to MSN, but...?)

Generic "Other" Field:
GMail: Unlimited, tagged as Home, Work, Other
Outlook: No direct equivalent

Web Address:
GMail: No direct equivalent
Outlook: 1, not tagged

The contact name is a special case. GMail does a poor job importing Outlook contacts since it leaves the name blank on business-only contacts. I guess Google devs only talk to their friends. The app I've written will fix your imported list in GMail by substituting the company name if the name is missing. Lots of little stuff like that is easy to do. It's the "unlimited" lists in GMail and the many places where there isn't a direct correlation that are creating questions in my mind.

When something doesn't quite match up should the app simply not do anything? Or would you prefer a partially successful sync? What about some sort of manual conflict resolution? What other options would you like to see in a sync app? (Limited to sync activity and contacts -- I don't plan to mess with ToDo lists, calendars or anything outside of contacts.)
