HTC Aria :: Need To Know Is Polite Ringer Preinstalled
Sep 25, 2010
On this page: HTC A6380 Aria 3.2" Touchscreen GPS 3G Wi-Fi Phone Black it says that there is a feature that they added, called polite ringer. does that aria have that, pre-installed?

I do have the option on that decreases the volume once I move it, but even before I move it, it's sometimes very hard to hear unless if there is no other noise. Could it be the actual ringtones? I used ringdroid to edit down songs and make a ringtone on the aria.

First I will explain my situation. Then, I would greatly appreciate constructive dialog on how other developers feel similar situations should be managed.I wrote a simple app in November.I offered it for free on the Market for two reasons. One, Google hadn't implemented paid apps yet, so I had no choice. Two, by my own admission, v1.0 was too simple too garner payment. However, in the app's documentation, I requested donations toward future development.Out of thousands of installs, I received nothing. This week I finished a considerably fancier version of the program. Given hundreds of hours of unpaid development, I decided to charge a few bucks for the new version.I split the app into lite and pro versions. The lite version has all the new fancy features enabled but is limited in how large a document can be created (spread sheet, I limited the number of rows/cols, admittedly unlimited in the earlier version). The pro version went to Market as a new app, the lite version on top of the old app to retain the long feedback history.
Since the Market provides no way to downgrade, I put the old unlimited version on my website and put directions in the new lite version in multiple places explaining how to revert to the old version. Thus, any user dissatisfied with the rol/col limit could restore the EXACT functionality they had before upgrading to the lite version.Incidentally, the 325 character blurb allotted on the Market was insufficient to list the new features and the lite version's limitation and the caveat that the lite version could be reverted through my website.I simply could not communicate these facts to users to help them decide whether to upgrade or what to expect after upgrading.
The complaints about the new lite version have been diverse. Most pertinent to this discussion are complaints that the lite version now limits the rows/cols where the previous version didn't.I find such complaints unjustifiable since I explicitly permit reversion.I literally don't see what they have to complain about. Another irksome genre of complaints is that the program is still too simple to ask any money for at all. I am infuriated. It costs less than an ice cream cone. So, as discussion, how would other developers handle this situation: initial app is simple so offered for free, later version is complex so split into lite/pro. You don't want to limit the lite version by not showing the new fancy features, so the limitation must be something else, a time limit, a forced delay splash screen, something.I chose limited rows/cols on a spreadsheet app, but also permitted reversion to the old unlimited version.

I cant wait for the Sense 2.1 update for Hero in March. Do you think it will include the Be Polite feature? You know the one which automatically lowers the ringtone volume when you pick it up?

I just checked tonight, and the Aria is mysteriously missing from the HTC site. Are there plans to stop production? It's still available on the AT&T site.

Just got the new HTC Incredible. Awesome phone and this forum has already been a huge help, so I figured I'd join and ask my first question. The phone of course came with some apps already installed. I went to uninstall them, but it doesn't show up. Is there a way to do it with out getting all into moving files and all that stuff? I basically want to get rid of Friend Stream and the Desk Clock (since the other app, Clock, has the desk clock and is the same thing, just a different default setting when you open it).I'd like to maybe ditch the GMail app too, because the Mail app is set up to my gmail and does everything I want it to do.

I know I can view PDFs, but what am I using to do it? I don't seem to have Reader listed in my installed apps list.I'm asking because I was going to update to the latest version, but now I'm not sure if I'll be updating or installing it for the first time. Does Froyo natively open PDFs or something? (On a related Adobe note, should I go ahead and install AIR now, in case I need it after Gingerbread comes out? I don't even know what it does, really, but apparently installing it *after* an OS update causes problems. Why Adobe can't just fix that issue, I have no idea.)

I've had problems with Gmail and Maps applications previously with Neophyte ROMs. In that case one of the solutions was removing the apks for these apps from with the /system/app folder of the ROM zip.My question is:
Is it possible to add our own apks to the custom ROM so that these apks come preinstalled on the ROM when someone flashes it..in a manner, a kind of 2nd generation mod?Is it possible to add our own system variables and settings files so that the ROM autoinstalls it on First Install? In particular, I'd like to preset my own APN file for the network.

So there are a bunch of apps that I have no desire to see on a regular basis. This is my first android phone (coming from a BB) and I could usually remove apps from the listing of core apps in the desktop software, but haven't learned how to do this with the Android OS. The specific apps I'm talking about are the ones that came on the phone like Twitter, Flickr, and Peep.

The second video posted that shows the droid running 2.1 shows what seems to be a google voice update. The icon looks nicer to fit the 2.0/2.1 icons and it now says "Voice" instead of "Google Voice." This would be a welcomed change if so!

Does the Vibrant on T-Mobile USA come with Google navigation preinstalled or is it a separate download. My aunt bought one and I was trying to tell her about it and she said the man at the store said you had to pay $10 a month for GPS on the phone and I told her that was BS unless they specifically blocked it from being installed.
She lives in another city so I won't be able to play with the phone for a while. She looked and said she didn't think she saw the navigation icon.

I'm working on a custom ROM for my Toshiba Thrive and I'd like to install some apps with data already placed on installation, but I can't find out how. An example would be ADW as a launcher. Right now, it boots and immediately goes to the welcome screen for a fresh install of ADW. I'd like to make a default theme for ADW so that when someone installs the ROM, they can avoid that initial setup of ADW.

I tried searching, but couldn't find anything about my question. My Droid came with Facebook preinstalled. Since the latest update for AppBrain, the list of updates available shows an update for Facebook. However, when I go to instal the update I am taken to the main install page. As if I didn't have Facebook installed already. When I got to the app manager in settings, Facebook is not listed as an installed app. Anyone know what is going on? Can I just download the marketplace Facebook app and not worry about there being two instances of Facebook on my system?

There's a new version of Facebook available on the Market, but because the Desire comes with the official Facebook app already installed it doesn't prompt you to update it.When you click to install the version on the Market, the phone is clever enough detect the preinstalled one and applies it as an update, so you don't end up with two Facebook apps in the phone menu or Manage Apps menu. After installing it the Manage Apps option changes from 'Clear data' to 'Uninstall updates' and the version has gone from 114 to 121. You'll also notice that the 'Take photo' tile has now been replaced with 'Inbox'. There's still no option to tag people in images.

I've tried ACTION_PICK with Intents but that seems to leave out apps that were downloaded and it has a bunch of junk in it.
