Android :: Package Is Not Signed Correctly Error On Customer Install
Feb 11, 2009
A customer wrote me that his upgrade of my app would not install and gave the following error: package isnot signed correctly The install worked find for me but I was getting a lot of bad reviews because of this error and I removed the app. How is this possible; you can't upload an app to Google Markets without it being signed correctly?

I recently uploaded my application to the android market however it's refusing to run when downloaded due to the error
Package file was not signed correctly
I first published the packet using eclipse, right click export, creating a keystore then publishing, however it refuses to work.
I then downloaded the keytool and jarsigner and used them to sign an upgrade which I posted instead. However this gives the same error.
And since I cannot delete the application I cannot try and start again,

A small percentage of our users are getting a package not signed correctly error when installing our app that was downloaded from the Market. They can't re-download from the Market, so we are having to get them to download and install it from our site, which works fine. It seems to happen to maybe 1% of our users, and only for our paid app, not for the free one (at least that we've heard of, naturally the paid users are going to contact us more than the free ones). I'm guessing it's a problem when the download is corrupted for some reason, but in that case shouldn't the Market let them re-download it and try again? Anyone else seeing this? I've uploaded my first apk to Google Play, made with processing 2.03.
I used this guide to sign: http:[url].....After a few hours, when the app was visible, when trying to install, I get the "package was not signed correctly". I'v tried it on another device rather than the one used for testing and I have the same issue.
1. is there a way to test apk's faster? It could take up to 12-24 hours for the new apk to be updated on Google Play, and that's what I have to wait to see if I now signed my apk correctly.
2. can you download the app and see if you get that issue?
3. does it matter what information you input when you create the release key using jdk? I mean, does google check against information you use in your Google Play publisher's account and then gives that error?
4. is there an alternate way of signing my apk?
I am using win 7 64 bit, latest jdk7 at the time of writing, latest android sdk with just api level 10 installed, latest version of apache ant (installed manually).

I published my app on the market, and when I first tried installing it from there, I got the 'package file was not signed correctly' error. Uninstalling the unsigned version I was testing with let me install from the market with no problems. However, from the comments, it looks like no one else can install my application.
I've put other versions up that worked, and I used the same certificate, so I'm pretty sure it is not an issue with the validity days for the certificate.
The name of my application is Bloxors. It will be going up and down as I try to figure out what the issue is here, but if someone else who is getting the error can debug it it would be greatly appreciated.

My .apk file is confirmed working, however for users of the Motorola Milestone (which runs the same android version 2.0 and up) they receive the error upon attempt to install. I've googled and searched through the other questions here. The error seems to normally only appear if you did something wrong in the signing wizard or renamed the file. Is it possible that some kind of software difference on the OS build on these Milestones is preventing the install?

I am using Windows XP and Eclipse to develop. I updated everything today, the new sdk, the new adt etc. After that, when I tried to "export signed application package", nothing happened. If I click "export unsigned application package", a dialog box showed up. Anything i missed? How can I fix this problem? - You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Android Developers" group. With a few thousand customers, only 2 have complained of this problem. They install the app, then put the phone in standby/sleep mode (i.e. turning it off, but not shutting it down). When they turn it back on, my app's icon is reverted to the generic green and white android icon and the title shows as the class name of the app instead of the title. And, of course, the app no longer works. I am at a loss as to what to do. It seems like an android bug to me. And I think both customers are using a Motorola Droid. Anybody else heard of this? I am not sure what to search for on Google.

1) I am developing my app in Eclipse 3.4.1 with Android (ver 1.1_r1) plugin. My app compiles and executes without errors when using the Eclipse IDE.
However, when I export my app (unsigned) using Eclipse (via {select project} >right-click>Android tools>export unsigned application package), sign it, and try to run it on the Emulator, it throws a runtime error when I try to update my sqlite database, at which time the specific error created is: SQLite error#14, unable to open database. It is able to read from the database without problems. (I have also verified that the database is: open, is not readonly, is not locked by another thread, is not in the middle of a transaction.)
I have limited experience, but this seems more like a "system" problem given that the app works OK in Eclipse IDE but then fails as an exported/signed apk. Some googling of SQLite resources revealed a similar error on a non-Android platform which was fixed by: "Set your permissions correctly on /var/tmp, or whatever directory you are using to hold temporary files".
Does Android have temporary files, and if so how does it handle permissions on temporary files? Is there a way to check or set these permissions to see if this fixes my problem here?
2) Not sure if it is related, but after I have run the exported/signed app which causes the runtime error, if I reboot the Emulator, and try to run the program using the Eclipse IDE , the program fails with the same exact error. PLUS I also noticed the following error message while the program is installing/running: 03-01 22:22:29.282: ERROR/PackageManager(53): Package com.northwestradiology has mismatched uid: 0 on disk, 10019 in settings; read messages:
I can restore the Eclipse version of my program to be able to execute without runtime errors by utilizing the -wipe-data option for the emulator. But note that if I run my signed APK using an emulator created with the -wipe-data option, it still throws the runtime error listed above...

I'm trying to hack an apk.My first step was to use apk multi tool, and to just decompile and recompile it.No error appears during those steps. But this new apk won't install on my phone !
If I check difference between the two apk:all xml files are differents .RSA and .SF have not the same name classes.dex, resources.arsc and manifest.mf are differents.I don't understand those difference. how to recompile a proper version ?
This app is a french app that shows speed cameras on the road. However this app is now only showing a big zone and not the exact location for france. But it stills show precise location for other countries, so obfuscation is done at the apk level, and I already found where it is in the code, so i'd like to bypass it and recompile a "special' version

I have some problem installing my apk file in code. Wondering if anyone could find out what I did wrong.
What I was trying to do is put a Check Upgrade function in our program. When user clicks it, it will send request to our web server and find out what is the latest version. I use app versionName to stamp a version, something like 2010.11.23. I don't use the version code in Manifest.xml file. So our program sees the latest VersionName is later than itself, it will download the latest one, and then use the following code to install the new apk file:
CODE:........
Now looks like, everytime when I changed the VersionName, it will fail to install the apk file. It downloads the file fine. I don't know exactly why. Sometimes, in Eclips, when I hit debug, I got error saying "Re-installation failed due to different application signatures". I don't know if this is the same error caused the installation failed.
So, looks like my questions are:
Should that upgrade logic work? I am wondering if it has something to do with the VersoinName.
What could cause the application signature change? (I did sign our program before I put it on our server, but I always use the same key file for different versionName. )

I have an Android app modeled after the LunarLander example by Google.
I am debugging it on a real device, (Motorola Droid) with Android 2.0.
When the orientation changes, the program crashes on a null pointer Exception.
Logcat from just before crash:
CODE:.............
The first line that worries me is "Something wrong here" at 24:38.620. I have no idea what it means, But I think its due to me not reacting properly to the screen change.
Next I get a debug message that I printed myself from within my own method surfaceChanged() about the new surface dimensions.
Then I print out debug message about whether flies was null. flies is the field that eventually causes the NullPointerException. Its created once, and never written to again for the rest of the program. I know that it was not null before the crash, because it was read several times.
Does anyone have a clue how my private member variable came to be null just by these clues?
I would include code but there is a lot of it and I don't know what would be relevant.

I believe the 'Package Installer' is the thing that allows me to install apps?
I've only just noticed it in my 'manage applications' - I'm sure it never used to appear at the top of the list - and I'm tight on memory - so when it takes up 13mb as it does now I'm a bit stuck.
Can I click 'clear data' on it - or will that remove apps? There is no option to clear cache - all 13mb is listed in the Data.

installing an Android app without using the package installer.
Is there any way of installing an app through any other means than clicking on the .apk file in the folder?
Would it be possible to manually extract the apk archive and move the files to appropriate folders somewhere in /root/?

If changing the orientation of my phone or the emulator I get the following output in LogCat:
04-09 11:55:26.290: INFO/WindowManager(52): Setting rotation to 1, animFlags=0
04-09 11:55:26.300: INFO/ActivityManager(52): Config changed: { scale=1.0 imsi=310/260 loc=en_US touch=3 keys=2/1/1 nav=3/1 orien=2 layout=18}
04-09 11:55:26.460: INFO/UsageStats(52): Unexpected resume of client while already resumed in client
04-09 11:55:26.579: INFO/SearchPosition(807): Activity is paused
04-09 11:55:26.689: INFO/SearchPosition(807): Activity is resuming
SearchPosition is the activity that is displayed. Activity is paused is written in the onPause Method and Activity is resuming in the onResume method of the activity. I googled a little bit for the error message but I don't fully understand the meaning of it. I think it could mean that the old Activity is not properly destroyed after changing the screen orientation. Is this correct? If yes what causes the error? If this is not correct? What is the meaning of this output?

I'm attempting to override an Android View class to tweak the functionality just slightly. But I need to modify a field that does not have a setter method. I've placed the subclass in a package called android.widget. Why can't I access any of the package-private member fields? I notice that the compiler says they "cannot be resolved," rather than not being accessible. Does this have something to do with how Android.jar is built?
