If changing the orientation of my phone or the emulator I get the following output in LogCat:

SearchPosition is the activity that is displayed. Activity is paused is written in the onPause Method and Activity is resuming in the onResume method of the activity. I googled a little bit for the error message but I don't fully understand the meaning of it. I think it could mean that the old Activity is not properly destroyed after changing the screen orientation. Is this correct? If yes what causes the error? If this is not correct? What is the meaning of this output?

Several of my Android applications show the following type message in the logcat output:
I/UsageStats( 59): Unexpected resume of com.totsp.test while already resumed in com.totsp.test
In this case I created the default Hello World app by letting the ADT tool generate it, and it still gets this message. I am not doing anything special in onCreate and don't even have any other methods defined.
I realize this is an INFO level message, and it doesn't appear to hurt anything, but I was curious what was going on so I made a test application that keeps track of the onResume invocations. It is indeed re-resuming when this occurs. I'm wondering why this this occurs? While I haven't noticed a problem (other than these annoying log messages), it seems like it could be using more resources than necessary to do all this stuff an extra time.
I have searched and read a similar question here on SO, and the answer there seems dubious to me: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2606470/unexpected-resume-of-package-name-while-already-resumed-in-package-name-erro. Specifically, no, you don't want to use android:configChanges="orientation" because that is just subverting the orientation tear down/resume, rather than fixing it. Even the documentation notes "this attribute should be avoided and used only as a last-resort" (http://developer.android.com/intl/de/guide/topics/manifest/activity-element.html#config).
Also I have seen thread in the Android dev group where Mr. Murphy says the "unexpected resume" is "benign": http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/browse_thread/thread/567410dbfcc163c2.
I'll dig into the source when I get a chance, but I figured I would first just ask the all-knowing hivemind and see if someone already knows: why does this occur, and is it truly benign?

I just bought Xperia10 mini yesterday and download the Pc companion and installed it ! when I connect my phone to that it says there is another better softwaredriver for phone when I try to update it starts and download the driver then almost at the end it gets error and says it couldnt be installed cuz of issues?
Then I installed Update service I get this :

I recently uploaded my application to the android market however it's refusing to run when downloaded due to the error
Package file was not signed correctly
I first published the packet using eclipse, right click export, creating a keystore then publishing, however it refuses to work.
I then downloaded the keytool and jarsigner and used them to sign an upgrade which I posted instead. However this gives the same error.
And since I cannot delete the application I cannot try and start again,

A customer wrote me that his upgrade of my app would not install and gave the following error: package isnot signed correctly The install worked find for me but I was getting a lot of bad reviews because of this error and I removed the app. How is this possible; you can't upload an app to Google Markets without it being signed correctly?

My .apk file is confirmed working, however for users of the Motorola Milestone (which runs the same android version 2.0 and up) they receive the error upon attempt to install. I've googled and searched through the other questions here. The error seems to normally only appear if you did something wrong in the signing wizard or renamed the file. Is it possible that some kind of software difference on the OS build on these Milestones is preventing the install?

I have an Android app modeled after the LunarLander example by Google.
I am debugging it on a real device, (Motorola Droid) with Android 2.0.
When the orientation changes, the program crashes on a null pointer Exception.
Logcat from just before crash:

The first line that worries me is "Something wrong here" at 24:38.620. I have no idea what it means, But I think its due to me not reacting properly to the screen change.
Next I get a debug message that I printed myself from within my own method surfaceChanged() about the new surface dimensions.
Then I print out debug message about whether flies was null. flies is the field that eventually causes the NullPointerException. Its created once, and never written to again for the rest of the program. I know that it was not null before the crash, because it was read several times.
Does anyone have a clue how my private member variable came to be null just by these clues?
I would include code but there is a lot of it and I don't know what would be relevant.

I have tried to update the default youtube app on my nexus one (Froyo) numerous times. I get the message "Error Installing - Package file was not signed correctly". I am trying to upgrade from 1.6.21 to 2.0.26.I have tried unmounting my SD card, clearing the cache for the android market, the download manager and the original youtube app.

i just installed an update to google maps. then i tried to open the maps and a screen popped up that says: Installation error: package file was not signed correctly.
This same exact thing popped up in google maps when i first opened it after flashing to smoked glass v6. but it worked fine. this time though it just made me reinstall google maps and it will not install. whats going on?

i work on custom Application Manager and try to get the disk usage of installed package. So PackageManager.getpackageSizeInfo was removed from SDK on 0.9->1.0 update android.content.pm. PackageStats(String pkgName)(cacheSize, codeSize, dataSize) returns always "0" Size of phys. file (java.io.File) in "/data/app" seems wrong/not completely. Has anybody any solution to get the total disc space used by an installed package?

I'm getting a "SAXParseException: Unexpected end of document" error when trying to parse an xml document on android. The document in question is from the google weather api, but it seems to throw the same error regardless of the xml file in question (as long as the xml is valid) so I suspect it's a problem with my approach, rather than the xml. This is being done as a learning exercise, so I've probably (hopefully) overlooked something obvious. I've run the xml through an online validator, and it comes back as being well formed. (Can't tell me if it's valid as I don't have a DTD, but I dont think I need the DTD to parse the xml). This is the code that I'm using to try and parse the file:

In the interest of brevity, I've not included the original xml, but it's just the standard weather xml from googles feed. I've also tried a few completely different xml files, (including the sample from http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/xml/library/x-android/) and they all give the same error. (They also all validate as well formed when I run them through an online xml validator). This makes me think that it's not a problem with the xml, but rather with how I'm trying to feed it into the parser.

I'm attempting to override an Android View class to tweak the functionality just slightly. But I need to modify a field that does not have a setter method. I've placed the subclass in a package called android.widget. Why can't I access any of the package-private member fields? I notice that the compiler says they "cannot be resolved," rather than not being accessible. Does this have something to do with how Android.jar is built?

I have list of checkboxes in list binded by Custom simpleCurserAdapter. in my Custom simpleCurserAdapter ive override the newview and binview with my modifications. ive managed somehow to do multichoice.. wierd thing after i delete any item from my list , the first item's checkbox is being checked all of a sudden.. how does that happen? how can i solve it?

I'm registering a sensor listener with this line of code.
mSensorManager.registerListener(this,mSensorManager.getDefaultSensor (Sensor.TYPE_ACCELEROMETER), SensorManager.SENSOR_DELAY_FASTEST);
The rate is set to SENSOR_DELAY_FASTEST with the expectation that I would receive events roughly every 20-30ms. It turns out that I receive events only every 200-220ms (just now, my event code simply logcats the system time).
No matter which rate I use, SENSOR_DELAY_NORMAL, SENSOR_DELAY_UI, SENSOR_DELAY_GAME, or SENSOR_DELAY_FASTEST, I get the same result?

I'm having this problem with one of my apps where some people are reporting that their preferences are not being saved when they close and resume the app. The preferences theyre talking about happen to be actual Preferences (i.e. the built-in preferences manager for an activity). They say they're not doing anything special, just exiting the app and going back to it. Does anyone know why the prefs wouldn't be saved for only this select few people? I'm at a complete loss.

I am writing a simple android application with a class that extends activity, that plays a video from a url on the web. There is a button on top that on click takes the user to a web page.
What I want to do is when the user is browsing the web page, if he hits the back button, I want him to come back to the main activity and restart the video. Is there a way to do this?
Also, is there a way the video can be resumed from where it left off?

I am learning about OpenGL and managed to write a prototype game using VBO buffers. If I start the application from Eclipse or adb, everything works fine until I press the back or <Home> button. If I restart the application either by a long press on <HOME> and selecting my program or by restarting it from the applications, I sometimes get a black screen and the LogCat shows this error:

I have an AsyncTask that acts as a countdown timer for my game. When it completes the countdown it displays the out of time end screen and it also updates the timer displayed on the screen. Everything works fine, except I need to be able to pause and resume this when the pause button in the game is pressed.
If I cancel it and try to re-execute it, it crashes with an IllegalStateException.
If I cancel it and instantiate a new AsyncTask in its place the old one begins to run again and the new one runs at the same time.
Is there a way to cancel/pause the timer and restart it using AsyncTasks or is there a different way I should be going about doing this?

Got a Samsung Moment a couple of weeks ago. Last night starting using Astrid (Task/ToDo app), which came pre-installed on my phone. When I launched Astrid for the first time, I got a warning message -- something about making sure Sprint Update or Sprint Updater doesn't kill Astrid, or ruin it, or something. Clearly, I didn't understand the message. But I clicked "Okay" anyway, and started using Astrid. But I'm worried that a Sprint Update could erase all my Astrid data -- my To Do's. I'm reluctant to create many Astrid tasks until I know how to prevent them from being unexpectedly erased. My questions: Can anyone explain the situation to me? (e.g., I have no idea who/when/how/where/what Sprint updates). Can anyone explain what I need to do to prevent the catastrophe about which Astrid was warning me?

I am pretty new to Android, the thing that bugs me the most about the IDE is that I am not able to get any information about an unexpected exception when it gets thrown, I can put a try catch block around identified code that generates it, but in many cases it takes time to find the line of code that generates the exception. is there any other way I can get the exception information? in JDT when an unexpected exception is thrown the call stack displays the exception class name. but in ADT this doesn't work.

I'm currently working with a two-activity application. The first activity allows the user to choose options for their upload, and the second activity displays a ListView of their results once processed.I have code in place that performs the uploads/downloads in the background, regardless of whether the application is currently in focus or not (thanks to Matthias Kaeppler's Droid-Fu).I would like to have my application Resume into my second (results) activity when a user clicks on the icon from the top-level launcher, regardless of how long they have been away from the app. I thought that the 'alwaysRetainTaskState' flag in the Manifest would do it, but I've not had success with that. Can anyone tell me how I need to set up my Manifest to get this functionality?

As you can see, I just call a method after 5 resp. 10 seconds. From time to time I would like to pause the "countdown". This means i want that the time until the 5 seconds are passed isn't running anymore. And then in a later point in time, I would like to resume it. How can I achieve that?

I have here a function that downloads data from a remote server to file. I am still not confident with my code. My question is, what if while reading the stream and saving the data to a file and suddenly I was disconnected in the internet, will these catch exceptions below can really catch that kind of incident? If not, can you suggest how to handle this kind of incident?

What I have here is a simple webview activity that when loaded it auto displays an ongoing notification. The idea is that people can navigate away from this activity and quickly access it again from any screen they want by pulling down the drop down menu and selecting it. Then when they want they can just close the notification by hitting the menu button and hitting exit and then the notification clears. This all works fine. However, when the notification is pressed it starts a new instance of the activity. What would I have to change to make it see if the activity has not already been destroyed and I can just call that instance back(resume it) and therefore not needing to load it again and won't need to add another activity to my stack.

I've got an app that creates an intent for the last.fm android app in which it will start the "recommended" station for my account when i press a button. The trick i'm trying to figure out is how do i get the phone back to my app without the user having to navigate back manually? Once it start the last.fm intent it takes you to the playlist and i need it to resume back to my app automatically.

I've an App which performs a potentially large download in background thread. When the orientation changes or the keyboard is opened the App lifecycle system invokes the start/stop/pause/resume etc calls - is there any strategy available to resume the download rather than just set a flag so the new onCreate() knows it was interrupted and has to start it again?
