I believe the 'Package Installer' is the thing that allows me to install apps?
I've only just noticed it in my 'manage applications' - I'm sure it never used to appear at the top of the list - and I'm tight on memory - so when it takes up 13mb as it does now I'm a bit stuck.
Can I click 'clear data' on it - or will that remove apps? There is no option to clear cache - all 13mb is listed in the Data.

installing an Android app without using the package installer.
Is there any way of installing an app through any other means than clicking on the .apk file in the folder?
Would it be possible to manually extract the apk archive and move the files to appropriate folders somewhere in /root/?
I have some problem installing my apk file in code. Wondering if anyone could find out what I did wrong.
What I was trying to do is put a Check Upgrade function in our program. When user clicks it, it will send request to our web server and find out what is the latest version. I use app versionName to stamp a version, something like 2010.11.23. I don't use the version code in Manifest.xml file. So our program sees the latest VersionName is later than itself, it will download the latest one, and then use the following code to install the new apk file:

Now looks like, everytime when I changed the VersionName, it will fail to install the apk file. It downloads the file fine. I don't know exactly why. Sometimes, in Eclips, when I hit debug, I got error saying "Re-installation failed due to different application signatures". I don't know if this is the same error caused the installation failed.
So, looks like my questions are:
Should that upgrade logic work? I am wondering if it has something to do with the VersoinName.
What could cause the application signature change? (I did sign our program before I put it on our server, but I always use the same key file for different versionName. )
I wanted to know if I clear the data in applications for package installer will it mess with my downloaded apps?
View 5 Replies View RelatedThe package installer looks to take up a good amount of space when installing applications. We've published a very large game (ProjectINF - 6mb). And it looks to be taking up a good amount of space during the install process, to the point that we have a lot of users emailing us with complaints/requests to "fix it".
From what we've seen, it looks to take about 22mb of free space to install a 6mb apk. While I can imagine taking double or so for unpacking and temp locations, almost 4x the size seems a bit high. After an install with 22mb free, the device has 16mb free (which makes perfect sense). Users also seem to be getting errors on the market when trying to install with less than that amount of space (with no real clear error message, just "Install Failed".
I need to make an installer which will ask for T&C and install the App . But i am not able to find any tutorial related to the same .

Because if I would need to install APKs in a situation where I don't have access to the market (No Internet access, etc.) I would need to use Astro File Manager and if I didn't have it installed I would need a way to install it without using the standard way of using the market.it would save me bandwidth to install it from the SD Card each time.

View 2 Replies View RelatedOver the last 6 months, I've bought several applications through the market without any problems. Yesterday, I bought Camera Zoom FX which downloaded just fine. But after downloading, it's been stuck at "Installing." in the Download-section of my Market. It sais "Purchased" in the upper right corner (as usual) and I've received the receipt through e-mail. I tried to install another app afterwards, and that worked just fine. Its about 24 hours since I purchased the app now, but it's still trying to install. I've rebooted the phone at least 5 times, cleared the Market-cache before and after rebooting. I've even tried to remove my SD-card just in case.If I click and hold the application in the Market-app, the only choice I get is "Details", not "Uninstall" and the other options I usually get. When I go to the apps details, the button at the bottom is greyed out and says "Installing..". This means I can't cancel the installation or choose uninstall.
My Hero has the official 2.1 version (fully updated) without root or other modifications.I've looked through the forum several times, including what seems to be relevant posts, but I can't seem to find any real solution for this problem. Anyone know how I can fix this? I think it's really strange that Android doesn't have any form of time-out or something for this..
When I download and unzip the SDK file and click on SDK Setup and the packages to install comes up do I need to install all of them or just the one that goes with 2.2?

I updated firmware to 1.5 about a month ago and I have installed apps since then with success, I just can't do it now. Argh! It's really annoying.Are there settings I can check, or change the way it downloads? I'm trying to download over secure wifi and it doesn't seem to matter if the battery's fully charged or not.

After successfully following the instructions on how to circumvent the issue,I kind of had a feeling like I should be careful on which apps to download so as to not undo the workaround. (It did eventually happen but I have had to factory reset my Hero only once since then.) That being said, is it now safe to download apps willie nillie?

View 5 Replies View RelatedMy .apk file is confirmed working, however for users of the Motorola Milestone (which runs the same android version 2.0 and up) they receive the error upon attempt to install. I've googled and searched through the other questions here. The error seems to normally only appear if you did something wrong in the signing wizard or renamed the file. Is it possible that some kind of software difference on the OS build on these Milestones is preventing the install?

I've found instructions for creating the links to launch the Market but this assumes that you are the developer of the app in question and know the exact package name.
Is there any way to get the package name, other than just contacting the developers and asking?
Also, it turns out that those instructions don't really work for creating web hyperlinks. They only give you a URI to reference in a string of Java code in another Android app. Our site is in Drupal, so Java is not going to work.
For the iPhone, I found easy instructions for getting the URL/link style I need from the iTunes store, so I'm looking for info like that.
So i just flashed to r7. and previously from the stock no twiz 1.5. ive been using swype flashed r1 then r6 and now r7 however with R7 i get an error msg.. "package failed to install" ive tried deleting every instance of swype.. no luck.. anyone else have this problem?

I have the latest Play Store and Play Store Services apps on SGS2 v4.1.2 stock rom.
I tried deleting both data and cache of both, I uninstalled the old app and also tried downgrading both Play Store App, but nothing worked.
I found that the APK files I receive for paid apps are not standard zip files, they seem corrupted or encrypted: can this be?
i work on custom Application Manager and try to get the disk usage of installed package. So PackageManager.getpackageSizeInfo was removed from SDK on 0.9->1.0 update android.content.pm. PackageStats(String pkgName)(cacheSize, codeSize, dataSize) returns always "0" Size of phys. file (java.io.File) in "/data/app" seems wrong/not completely. Has anybody any solution to get the total disc space used by an installed package?
View 4 Replies View RelatedSeems to me everyone is so grateful for the Rom update that we haven't had time to be hacked off about it. I work in software and the size and number of these updates says to me that HTC knew about many of these issues before the handset shipped and were already working on fixes them. There is no way things like the camera upgrade are bug fixes found after go live. Someone (probably an accountant) decided that it was OK to ship even with the defects and that when they were fixed it was OK to have an update system that forced us all to completely rebuild our phones or partly rebuild them if we were prepared to buy a third party app to back them up.
If HTC seriously want to take on the Iphone they are going to have to be a lot slicker in future. Just having a great product is not good enough you need the whole package if you want mass market appeal. In the end they may have shot themselves in the foot. This update may have largely fixed the lag but all those early reviews are still out there and people considering this phone will still find them and be put off for months or years to come. Don't get me wrong I love it and would not change it for an Iphone or anything else I am just sad that such a great product has been so badly tainted by poor customer service and niggling faults.
I bought a hero used and went to hook it up to my work account (my only phone), but I can't talk my boss into paying for a data package and sprint wont split it out. Is there any way to trick sprint into thinking it is just a regular phone so they will connect it and I can just use it with wifi?I tried searching on this topic but didn't find anything.I might not have been searching for the right wording.
