Motorola Droid :: Leaving Screen On All Of The Time Be Bad For Longevity Of Phone
Apr 30, 2010
Would leaving the screen on all of the time be bad for the longevity of the phone? I ask cause my phone stays in the dock for extended periods (days) on end. What is the expected life of the phone or shortest span component?

This is kind of a detailed question, but basically, I have been reading through some threads and came across someone who wrote that keeping the wifi turned on to 'never sleep' optimizes your battery life by a lot (instead of using mobile connection). So I set this up, but I also have the app Advanced Task Killer and I am trying to figure out if I need to set the wifi to the ignore list (so that it doesn't get killed everytime) or if Advanced Task Killer doesn't effect this.I am just trying to optimize my battery so I can actually use the internet without it dying on me so quickly. I charged it all night and literally 5 minutes after I unplugged it, my phone was down to 90% life.

So, i have been doing some reading, but cannot find any solid answers that really pertain to us. Right now, our phone's screens are beautiful, but i am wondering how long we can expect them to stay that way. In regards to #1, it is a worry given how static some of the things on our screens are, like the top right chunks of the notification bar. The 3G icon, signal bars, and time (especially AM/PM) don't change that much, and seem like a good candidate for burn-in. In reading, i think i even found a few people that said the "M" in AM/PM was already burning in. Short of rooting, is there anything that can change the bar to help it avoid burn in? In regards to two, i know that the AMOLED pixels will fade over time, especially blue first. Is there any documentation on just how long these Sammy OLED's will actually last?

looking for some educated feedback on this, is the droid really better in terms of power than the eris? i returned the eris because i thought it was too slow and didn't stack up to what the droid is, but was i wrong?
i look at the verizonwireless website and they have the same stats, except for the keyboard of course. but then i hear some htc users say that the eris is just as powerful as the droid and can do everything that the droid can in terms of performance. on the other hand i get people telling me that the droid is the 'powerhouse' and ive read that the droid is the 'high-end' phone. people have told me about better cpu/processor/memory - is this true and is it noticeable? and will it effect the phones longevity compared to the eris for the future? i heard that it will as more updates comes out... someone told me that the eris will never be up to par with the droid hardware wise and that the droid is the safe bet if you want the most from future updates ... also read that the eris will be 'long in the tooth' (old) faster.

MotoDroid 2.2. Since 2.2, the auto-rotate screen goes haywire from time to time. I normally use the vertical format, easier to type, but when it switches, not much screen left, and I have to go back and back to start over again.

This will be my first major smartphone purchase. I wanted to know if hot weather could ruin the phone in terms of overheating and what not.
I like to play a lot of sports outside so would there be an issue with the hot sun beating on this bad boy.

Is there any way to change when these 3 things happen separately? Can I make it so my screen fades earlier but still takes just as long to go completely black? Is there a way to extend the time between total blackout and locking? Is there a way to turn off auto screen lock all together but keep the auto fade out and auto black out? I am always able to remember to manually lock the screen and the auto lock is annoying but I still like the power saving of the screen fade and black out.

I set my screen time out to 30 seconds and..it's been 30 seconds my screen is not timing out. This can be REALLY annoying when I forget to push the power button and just put the phone in my pocket and the battery drains.
I called verizon about this yesterday they had me turn my phone off and back on and then it did time out. Today I tried the same thing and it's not timing out..
The phone is brand new, only 3 days old has not been dropped or anything.

I purchased a universal car dock form my moto droid and it fits well. I had to because the car dock from Motorola would not fit with the phone case on it. I usually have the map view while driving, but the screen turns-off. Is there a way or app to not turn-off the screen while using the car-home app.

Has anyone noticed since 2.0.1 update that when you wake the phone up and don't unlock it the screen will go back to sleep much faster than it normally would if unlocked?

I want the screen to stay awake in the car dock even when its NOT charging. Both of my power outlets are broken, so I cant charge it while driving. Kinda bothers me that the screen wont stay on. I tried running a stopwatch in the background, but she timed out anyway.

Is there a way to get the lock screen time and date widget (or one that looks like that) on the home screen? I like the clarity and simplicity. The standard home screen widget is so ugly.

I am a new android user, and got my Droid 2 the morning they came out at the Verizon store. Now the guy that was helping me at the store told me that the battery life would be bad because of the high resolution screen but I didn't expect it to be this bad. I have been having really bad battery issues and I don't even use it constantly. I have it on around 20% brightness during the day, and I really only send text messages, and some web browsing but not a huge amount. My battery will be drained after 6 hours or so, and will need a charge again. When checking on battery manager it does say that most of my energy is going to my screen, but like I said I don't even have it close to the full brightness. I have been using an app killer program to try to maintain that also, but I did read somewhere that it can actually hurt your battery more, from closing and opening apps. Just wanted to hear some feedback from other users since we a couple days after launch. Everything else has been great with this phone, and I am REALLY enjoying the android OS after switching from a Blackberry.

So my phone has this weird pattern of resetting about 2 minutes away from my house when I'm driving (happened in two opposite directions). It was just sitting in my pocket and I hear it reset (sometimes it reset multiple times on the same trip). I thought it was maybe the task killer running funny so I disabled it, and still it resets. Happens every time. I'm using Fresh 0.3 but it happened in earlier versions of Fresh too. Anyone else having this issue? Maybe it has to do with switching towers or something (in my house I get a very very very weak signal).

I recently picked up my EVO, and am loving it. Does anyone know if there are negative effects to leaving the phone on the charger? At work, I'm primarily in my office, and could leave the phone on the charger during the day and then it would always be full when I leave in the afternoon.

Half the time that I am using the phone doing normal things ex: writing a text, going to the market, opening up an app, etc. the phone will not respond to my touch. I have to lock my phone and then unlock it to get it to respond.
I personally don't think that is normal and if it is it should not be a normal thing someone has to deal with.

I notice that on random occasions,I'd have an extremely hard time unlocking my phone. When pulling the unlock bar on the lock screen (stock),there are times when my finger doesn't register.I'd do it for a few times until it finally works.Anyway,I had this problem with the Incredible when trying to unlock that screen (HTC EVO 4G and Droid Incredible suffering from unresponsive screen issues -- Engadget)

This thread is NOT about making your battery last longer between charges. There are plenty of those out there with tips on how to extend your battery's charge. The purpose of this thread is to share with you some PROVEN tricks on how to extend the lifespan of your battery. Everyone knows that rechargeable batteries eventually lose their capacity to hold charge, and Li-Ion is no exception. However, there are things you can do to significantly slow down the aging of your battery. Again, these are proven (measurable) techniques, and they do not originate from the NiCd or NiMH days of charging. 1) Li-Ion is sensitive to hot temperatures. They can be instantaneously damaged by intense heat, and they can lose a lot of longevity though prolonged, minor heat. Unless absolutely necessary, try not to let the battery stay higher than 40 degrees Celcius for prolonged periods. The sweet spot for Li-ion temperature is between 20-35 degrees C. Don't ever leave your phone in the car on a hot day, or leave it in the sun. The high temps will damage the battery even if the phone isn't on.

I use Outlook/Exchange as my primary contact database, so I only wanted to sync my DX with Exchange for contacts. However, before I was able to get to my Google account settings on the X to tell it not to sync Google contacts - it had already synced them. Now, my contacts are a mess because of the damn "linked profiles", so practically every contact has some trash from my unmanaged Google contacts. Old email addresses, dupes, mislabled phone numbers (work, home, etc.) It's ugly and frustrating, since I keep my Exchange contacts perfectly edited and managed.
My problem is that I can't figure out how to delete the Google contacts from my DX other than doing it one at a time. (Since I have over 1500 contacts, that would be a huge pain.) Is there any way I can purge these? I'm a power Gmail user, so I can't just delete the entire Google account. (Not sure that's possible anyway.)

I am going crazy here... I've had this thing since it launched and everything is great except I keep hitting buttons with my face during calls! I mute, sometimes end calls, start 3 way calls etc and I have no idea how to prevent it. Is there any way I can make the screen lock during phone calls or change the call screen altogether?

Is it possible to set the screen to turn off, let's say, after 2 minutes, but have the phone only lock after, let's say, 10 minutes.
During the day I am in and out of my contacts constantly and I am unlocking my phone too much! I just want it to lock after a preset time, not every time the device is turned off.

I was playing around with my Nexus phone last week when I first got it. I was messing the screen sleep settings. I could have sworn there was option either associated with that or somewhere in the settings where it asked you how long it would take for the phone to lock the screen after it went to sleep.
OS = Jelly Bean
