HTC EVO 4G :: Noticing Huge Battery Improvement With Upgrade?
Jun 30, 2010
Before the update I would bring my phone to work at 100% and with moderate usage, maybe some Pandora/web browsing and it would be nearly dead by the time I brought it home 8-9 hours later. Or even at night lets say it was at 100% when I went to bed, I'd wake up without it plugged in 6-8 hours later and it would be down around 50% battery. Now the difference is almost night and day. In those same time periods I'm coming home from work now with 60-70% battery when I had 10-20% before. And in stand-by the phone hardly uses any battery, at most 1-2% per hour. I am now extremely satisfied with the battery use, it's much improved from the Palm Pre I came from. Also, before the update my phone was power cycling/resetting about every 10-20 mins. I would also experience times of extreme lag when trying to either open multiple apps at once or go through the menus very fast. I even had an an appointment setup at Sprint to have them look at the phone. However, once I applied the update the phone is much faster and I haven't experienced so much as a hiccup. Anyone else experiencing these positive changes?

Well my Ally's battery life sucks. I take it off charger at 6am. I go to school. Don't use it for a good 6 hrs. Return home. So what are some ideas for improving battery life?

I was one of those with a "bad" battery. I had the automatic 10% loss of the battery after about 20 minutes of the phone being on. I would barely use my phone during the day (check text messages and email 5 or 6 times and maybe 1 15 minute phone call, and 10-15 minutes of internet browsing) and have the battery down to 20-25% by the time i got home after an 8 hr workday. So I called verizon, explained the problem and they sent me a new stock dinc battery in 2 days. I will say that that when I first got my phone months (as a pre-order), I played with it before fully charging the battery. So maybe I am at fault for making a "bad" battery. No chances this time around. This time i cut the phone off, put the new battery in, and let it charge for a solid 8 hours. All I have to say is WOW. Now i know what it is like to be one of you guys who say "what battery problems?" I worked my 8 hr day, used the phone the same as I usually do and I still have 85% battery left. I never lost that intial 10% of the bat either. I don't know if not charging my battery properly the first time hurt my first battery or if I just had a bad one. But for all of you who get a new dinc, charge the battery right the first time is my advice.

I've got a number of particular questions, and having read all the threads I can find, there's still a couple of things i am not 100% on. 1. Would any micro USB 1A charger be safe to use with the phone? It's just I'd like to have a spare charger to take with me when at work/away on business, and having found that just USB from the PC is far to slow, I wanted to make sure it was ok? 2. Is regularly (daily) overnight charging ok? It's just that i have read it's not great to leave it on charge once it's full. That seems problematic to me if a overnight charge = 7 hours charging, but the phone only needs 3 hours to charge at least 90%. 3. I seem to get about 20-22 minutes of heavy usage (Wi-Fi on, browsing / using apps) to 10% of the battery at the moment. The phone is only 1 week old though, am I likely to see an improvement, and if so what sort of one?

My phone all but died yesterday (see my other post) and was forced to do a factory reset. I went through and only re-installed apps that did not state about preventing the phone from sleeping. Most days I unplug my phone at 6am and its completely dead by 2pm. I unplugged today at 8am and at 2pm its at 75% to 80% (normally unplugging at 8 it would be at 30% at 2pm. I dont know if its the factory reset, or not installing apps that keep the phone from sleeping or what the deal is, but wow. My usage has been the same today if not more than normal cause of reinstalling my apps and re setting everything up from doing the reset. When I looked at my phone a few minutes ago to see if I have to do my normal afternoon recharge and it was still near full.

I've never had "bad" battery life but have always felt that the battery does die pretty quick. I'm text up to 100 texts a day tops, pretty heavy internet (checking work emails all day), a few phone calls here and there. Maybe some music here and there, nothing to justify the less than desirable battery life. Spare parts never showed anything out of line either. Rooting was something I had no desire to do (I tried it and found it useless for me). Like a few others, I'm patiently waiting for *whispers* THE UPDATE. Anyways I turned off Sense the other day and DRASTICALLY improved my battery life. Sense ON- wifi off, gps off, location off, mobile internet off. pretty much EVERYTHING off. By 1pm my battery was usually 50-60%. By 10pm my battery was dead. Sense OFF - wifi on and mobile internet on ALL DAY. Now by 5pm my battery is usually around 70%. Running music/HEAVY internet for the rest of the night leaves my battery at 35% by night end.

When the battery is low (Red LED blinkng) and somtimes at 15% when the popup comes up and you try to take pictures in close to or complete darkness pictures taken will look cut off like below:
Picasa Web Albums - JeffreyPeacock
If you keep taking pictures it will get to a point where the flash will stop working altogether and it will focus red bars take a picture of darkness since the flash did not come off. Opening and closing the camera app fixes this problem temporarily. If you plug it in and take pictures while plugged in the problem goes away. If you let it charge for a little bit unil it gets to around 15% and take unplug it and take pictures, the pictures will be fine until the battery drops to low (Red LED blinking). Two of my droids experiences this issue and my friend's droid as well.
This happened with 2.0 and 2.0.1
Additional Info:
What is weird is that when I start taking pictures, first 1/4 of the photo will be cut off, then 1/2, then 3/4, finally just a sliver of picture will come through. Then the flash wont even come on at all... even if I force the flash on under settings no light will appear. Then I have to restart the camera app to get it to cycle through. It would make sense it is a battery issue having a decrease in voltage and not being able to supply the needed power to the LED, but do all droids have that problem? Do I defected unit or battery?

I am a big fan of Android and the Captivate. I've been addicted since day one.
That said, I'm noticing a lot of lag for a "high end" phone with such high specs. I have two news widgets, one weather, and a live wallpaper, and that's it. But I notice sometimes I push the power button and nothing happens for a while. I swipe the lock screen and it freezes for a second. Things take time to happen on this phone. I'm not even running my favorite launcher (Launcher Pro) because when I run it, the wallpaper would freeze for a few seconds at certain times.
When I remove the the widgets and use a static wallpaper, things vastly improve. But then it's as plain and boring as an iPhone!
The widgets I'm running: Battery Indicator, Weather Bug, Engadget, News Buzz.
The wallpaper is the galaxy live wallpaper that comes with the phone.
I mean I customize the phone with a couple of widgets and a live wallpaper and I try to show it to someone, and instead of awing and shocking them with its brilliance, it turns into a crappy PowerPoint slideshow.

Which of these batteries do you suggest for my Eris? I am still in the 30 day period (and plan to upgrade if a newer phone is released within the period), but after that I am pretty sure I am going to get an upgraded battery.
The current options are:
2x BATTERY+DESKTOP CHARGER FOR VERIZON HTC DROID ERIS - eBay (item 280468408194 end time Mar-22-10 19:05:38 PDT)
or
Innocell 1750mAh Slim Extended Life Battery
The Seido one is larger and has a reputation, whereas the ebay one is slightly larger, but comes with the charger so that I can carry two. With the Seido, I would probably just do a complete replacement and not carry the extra. The ebay on is also vastly cheaper. <--not too big a factor, as if I keep the phone I will not cheap out on arguably one of the most important parts. However, as a colege student, the cheaper price is nice.

My wife has been happy with her Eris, but it's time for an upgrade. I thought that she'd like the Incredible, but hear about the issues with battery life and phone reception. Are these problems actually an improvement over the Eris? She's had problems with both, but can live with them if they're not worse.

I received the latest update a couple of days ago. I am like many on the forum that was having issues and growing very tired of this phone.
Issues I was having:
1- Blank display during a call. I have been having the issue of the phone display going blank during a call. The way it's designed to work is that when you place the phone next to your ear the display turns off to 1- save battery and 2- reduce heat. Mine was staying off which made it impossible to traverse a voice response system.
2- Lag during dialing.
3- Time without a signal. ** Retracted - This issue still exists. After rebooting multiple times the issue is back.
Fix - Reset to factory defaults. So far so good. Best the phone has been since updating from 1.5.
Never rooted- Stock versions
fw - 2.1
baseband - 2.42.01.04.27
kernel - 2.6.29-8a03cb9a, htc-kernel@and18-2 #1
build- 2.37.605.4 CL 185970 release-keys
software- 2.37.605.4
browser- WebKit 3.1
PRI - 2.11_002

I swap the giant clock on homescreen for something much smaller? I need more real estate and cant figure out how to disable it for the life of me. I also like weather but it, too, should be much smaller if there is different weather application.

If I want to render just a huge map, what is the best practice when using OpenGL ES with a mobile device (Android or iPhone based)? What is the best structure to contain all the vertices, normales and texture coordinates? I guess using a interleaved structure may give you some performance benefits caused by memory caching. Ok? Should I use drawArrays or drawElements to push my data to OpenGL ES? Well, I did no testing at all but I might think, that drawElements might be faster if the GFX does not use shared memory since you do not have to push that much data. Since this is really close to metall, what do you think? (the iPhone is ARM based while the Android platform is Qualcomm based (also an ARM?)

I have some Android code that can send files to my webserver using an HttpsUrlConnection, but when it tries to send larger files I get an OutOfMemory exception when opening the OutputStream. Can anyone offer some assistance?
It looks something like this:
code:..............
This is where I try different things. The closes solution has been: httpConn.setChunkedStreamingMode(1024); In this case, I don't get the OutOfMemory immediately when opening the OutputStream, but I see the heap growing as I os.write() and it eventually runs out.

I've just got myself a Desire since last week and I am really really happy with it. It's my first android phone (previously had a Nokia N95) so I am still trying to get my head around it.
I've just realised that the phone is using massive quantities of data over the last two or three days. I have installed an app to show me how much and it is saying over 4gb, a lot of it during the night when I have not being using the phone.
I have obviously been using the phone a lot since I got it but nothing close to that amount. The most data hungry app that I can think of that I have used is Grooveshark and that was only for about 20 minutes. Also I have gone into all the apps I can think of and made sure that they are either set for manual sync or else no more than once a day. Is there a way for me to tell which app or widget or whatever is using all of this data? I am sure I have forgot to change the settings on something but I cannot figure out what it could be.

The quick desk and bar control apps are so far my favourite. Previously I had my switches/toggles of WiFi/3g/gps/silent/bluetooth on the desktop. Now I have these switches in quickdesk. Thats not all - using the bar control app I can have any shortcuts in my slide down bar. So I just added the quickdesk app in my bar. The benefit is that I can now access my switches/toggles from anywhere.
For example if I am using my browser and forgot to switch on WiFi, while browser is open I just slide down the bar and through quick desk switch on WiFi. This means that I do not need to navigate away from the current app that is open. Normally you would have to minimize the current app open and navigate to desktop to toggle switches, then go back to the app you were using.
