Android :: Performance Of App On Phone Emulator Vs Actual Device?
Nov 24, 2010
I am working on a compute intensive app for Android. I do not have any device yet to test performance. However, the performance on emulator is a bit slower than expected. I see an old question about some estimation of emulator vs device. What are your experiences while developing apps with recent SDK Froyo/2.2. Is performance observed on emulator is slower than actual device. Please share your experience and the specs of your dev machine and mobile devices, both.

I'm looking into writing an Android game, tough I don't curerntly own an Android device. For those of you who own a device, how does the performance on the emulator relate to real device performance? I'm especially interested in graphics related tasks. This obviously depends on both the machine running the emulator, and the specific device in question, but I'm talking rough numbers here. This question is a duplicate, but since that post is heavily outdated, I figured it's irrelevant by now.

I have a problem drawing a background for my OpenGL app on the emulator. It all works well on an actual G1, but i'm worried that if the emulator has a problem, other android phones may have the same problem. On an actual G1 the background is drawn on the background. All other drawing is drawn in front of it. On the emulator, the background is always drawn on the foreground, obsuring any other drawing. Here are two screenshots, where i have my background only occupying half of the screen: From emulato. Code...

I created a Galaxy Tab emulator using these instructions: http://innovator.samsungmobile.com/galaxyTab.do
When I install my 4x2 widget on the emulator it displays like it does on a phone (full width, half the height). However I went to try it out on an actual device in Best Buy and there it displayed as if there is room for a 5th row and column. First of all, why is there this discrepancy? Second, how would I create a 5x5 widget?

I'm getting started with Android development, but the emulator performance on my machine leaves much to be desired. In all fairness, my machine is not a powerhouse by any stretch of the imagination.
Short of upgrading my hardware or spending $$$, are there any good tips for improving Android emulator performance?

The quick start guide says 3 hours to charge, where as here.
HTC Desire - When I first receive my phone, do I need to charge the battery?
It states 8 hours. Which should I follow? Also, can I have it switched on while I charge so I can set it up? And I imagine I should let it fully discharge before charging it again, but how many times is this appropriate for? The first 2 or 3 or more times?

So I developed a small 3d game on Android 1.6 with JPCT, the free 3d game engine Android version. It seems the frame rate is really low on emulator(5 frames per second).... Did I miss something to speed up the emulator or it is normal, I should test the game with real device?

A while back I mentioned that running the imported p2p codebase I have on the emulator (on a fairly powerful laptop with plenty of mem and a fast processor) was pretty slow. I blamed all that on the codebase and in fact I was able to profile it and make it much lighter. Well still the overall app performance is slow --- and I am finding that most apps I run on the emulator are fairly slow. Is this a common trend? I do expect emulators, who are by no means a real device, to have such processing delays but are they in general this slow? Any metrics or any other feedback from anyone that depict the factor of slowdowns you would expect on an emulator vs the real device? I know a lot of this are machine dependent as well but consider an idle powerful machine. And regarding memory - I am loading Eclipse with close to 1G to be able to run the emulator and its basic services - is that normal?

I have developed and tested my app on the emulator, and now want to install it on my HTC device. the apk installs successfully, however my database is not going with it. I have created my database using sqliteman browser b/c I have to insert a bulk data before the app starts. I have four tables in my db and call each in different activities and created all on the sqliteman. after the data is inserted I pull back the db onto the data folder of the emulator. it works perfect on the emulator but failed on the device. when I try to pull my db on the real device, it shows access denied problem

I have written a simple android app and it runs in the emulator. Now how do I actually copy it to my phone? I have HTC's Eris. When I attach it with USB it asks me If I want to mount it as a USB mass storage device. I then see it in my drive list.
The directories on the device are:
albumthumbs
amazonmp3
com.google.android.apps.listen
ComicReader
data
DCIM
download
media
music
rosie_scroll
Now what should I copy from my Project directory and where should I put it? And is there any other process I need to run to "install" my app?

I tried out this app: Fpt System Manager v1.1 Application for Android | Tools
And in the RAM area it currently shows me as having 83MB of RAM available out of 192.5MB of RAM. Obviously because of running apps.
What I'd like to know is how much _total_ RAM is _actually_ in my phone. The model I have is supposed to have 288MB of RAM (Rogers HTC Magic).
Is there an app, or is there some other way, to determine the actual specs of your phone, ie. actual total RAM installed?

I just used this getDeviceId() to retrieve the unique id of the phone, but in the emulator it gives 00000000 when I try to display it. I know it makes sense to do that but can I spoof a device id for testing purposes. I need to setup about 4 -5 android devices in my emulator to check the functionality of the app that I have written, and the entire app revolves around the unique id of the mobile device. I just feel, maybe it should be there in the DDMS but I am not able to figure it out.

Here is my issue. When I read or delete an email from my phone, it doesn't reflect in gmail when I login. It still shows as unread. Whenever I get new emails on the phone, it will say I have 5, but I only have 1 because I already read the other 4. But I cannot see them and can only view them then from gmail online. Never had this issue live past a *228 and reboot. I have cleared cache, tried reflash. Everything. Even went back to a working NAND and still same issue. I am using Aloysius v11 MAPS.

Ok I've read a gazillion threads on battery life and 2.1 etc etc and you have me all waiting anxiously for an update and bigger batteries but what about actual talk time on the phone? didn't see any threads about that. Its not uncommon for my phone to be a toy all week then on the weekend catch up with some buds or family or whatever and yak on the thing for 2 hours straight. Will it hold? I know my old razer with an ext batt would go 4 hours talk time easy, glimmer would do 2.5 hrs easy with stock battery sometimes more. Pearl did well, haven't really talked the Storm out cause its my work phone and I tend to shun that thing on the weekends ....so let me know how long you've talked on it! Battery life does seem to stink but I can't put the damn thing down so I'm sure that has something to do with it and all my other smartphones sucked battery wise too the first week or so, so I'm not passing judgment yet, just want to know how long i can talk on the thing before it dies....I will do my own testing soon but would like some ideas.

Is there a way to check if our code is running in the emulator vs a real device? I'm using a Map View which requires a signing key. I'm using the signature of the eclipse debug key when running on the emulator, but this won't work when I build a release version. I think I need to have a check to see if I'm running on a real device, and set it to the real release key at that time.
