I had Eclipse running with the Android plug-in and I decided to add the Emacs plug-in. I downloaded and it worked. Then I decided to go back to the Eclipse key bindings and the Android plug-in disappeared. I could not update it, because Eclipse said it was installed, but it was not showing up in the menu.
I had to re download Eclipse, and reinstall the plug-in.
Why don't different plug-ins cooperate? I had the same issue when I tried to download the Blackberry plug-in alongside the Android plug-in (in different workspaces) and that also did not work. The only solution is to have two separate Eclipse each with a different plug-in.

While doing debugging with Eclipse I noted that the debugger highlights the wrong line as "next line to execute" for methods with multiple return points. It fools the developer that the last line of the method is executed, where in fact it is not.Does anyone know if this is some kind of known issue? My colleagues have also experienced this but we have never seen it when doing on- device-debugging on e.g. the Sony Ericsson SDK.I couldn't find anything at http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/list There was a similar post in android-beginners 2007-11-25. No replies, though. http://groups.google.com/group/android-beginners/browse_thread/thread.

I am developing my own Chrome like Web Browser in Eclipse using WebView, so far its just a TextEdit that act as a url bar, a GO button to take WebView to whatever URL is typed, and of course the WebView showing this website.
1- When i go lets say msn.com, it goes fine but if i click -- news -- , it goes fine too, but the "URL bar" still show msn.com , it doesn't show the current URL im in, so its there a way to write to to the TextEdit or create a real url bar?
2- When i go to YouTube, if i hit play on a video it plays fine on WebView, but if i turn the device sideways, video shows liek to hit play again but you can still hear it in the background, if i hit play it just stop and wont play again any other videos, ( i found the YouTube API player and i followed what supposedly is how to use it but it never worked, i cant really find instructions on how to merge it to the app, supposedly just moved the .jar file but still playing in the browser) or how can i do in webview so when a user press play it ask you want to use browser or you want to launch youtube app, cant manage how to set up in intent for this activity.
Or how can i lunch youtube app from a button on my layout?
3- How to make android , in this case 4.0.4 recognize my app as a browser so whenever any app ask me to launch a browser, mine is on the list.
4- on my case ( galaxy s2 ) in chrome when i press menu, it pop this menu, on my app, menu key pop a little menu with settings only, but nothing happens ( of course ), how can i add items to this main menu, like About, Contact Me, Back , Forward and add stuff in settings too?
5- launch an app from a button on the app.

I am working on a compute intensive app for Android. I do not have any device yet to test performance. However, the performance on emulator is a bit slower than expected. I see an old question about some estimation of emulator vs device. What are your experiences while developing apps with recent SDK Froyo/2.2. Is performance observed on emulator is slower than actual device. Please share your experience and the specs of your dev machine and mobile devices, both.

On the documentation page "Developing on a Device" http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/device.html there may be two errors in the section "Setting up a Device for Development."
First: To run (not debug) an app on a device, you do not need to set the "debuggable" attribute in the manifest. The documentation implies this is a requirement. It may be a good idea, but, when stepping an absolute beginner through the process of running their first app, this is an unnecessary detour.
Second: The instructions for turning on USB debugging don't mention the Settings activity: "On the device, go to the home screen, press MENU, select Applications > Development, then enable USB debugging."
The first error is more of a quibble, but the second seems to be actual misinformation that may puzzle a beginner, wondering why there isn't an "Applications" item on the Home app menu. In most cases this should go "Settings > Applications > Development > USB Debugging," and the menu key is not involved.

The quick start guide says 3 hours to charge, where as here.
HTC Desire - When I first receive my phone, do I need to charge the battery?
It states 8 hours. Which should I follow? Also, can I have it switched on while I charge so I can set it up? And I imagine I should let it fully discharge before charging it again, but how many times is this appropriate for? The first 2 or 3 or more times?

I have written a simple android app and it runs in the emulator. Now how do I actually copy it to my phone? I have HTC's Eris. When I attach it with USB it asks me If I want to mount it as a USB mass storage device. I then see it in my drive list.
The directories on the device are:
albumthumbs
amazonmp3
com.google.android.apps.listen
ComicReader
data
DCIM
download
media
music
rosie_scroll
Now what should I copy from my Project directory and where should I put it? And is there any other process I need to run to "install" my app?

I am a newcomer to android development. I created a image puzzle app named "Sexy Image Puzzle" It is a simple jigsaw puzzle. As I have just started developing for android, I didn't buy the dev phone yet. I tested the application in Emulator. I was planning to create similar puzzles for Cars too. But the app has too less downloads so far. Could anyone use this app and let me know, what is going wrong? It is a free application, so there is no payment involved. I just want to know some feedbacks, what is going wrong. This is a small help, I need from you guys, till the time I buy my dev phone (probably starting september)

I am looking generally in to Android development.
I keep seeing information on root however I am unclear how this relates to general android app development.
I understand that there is an emulator however when I get to actually test the software on a phone does that phone have to be a rooted device or is this only required if you wish to edit the core features of the os?
Finally are there are any development disadvantages to rooting the device such as that is no longer behaves like other android phones I may deploy too?

First of all, I just want to say I am a software developer, but I am not an Android developer. However I usually walk around and think on stuff. AndI've been recently thinking all the news concerning how fragmented Android is getting, with different Android versions and tweaks by different phone manufacturers, and then for developers you have different size formats. An example would be that HTC Tattoo might not be able to run everything that another phone might run, due to different screen formats, etc. And now the Android tablets are coming with different Android versions and different screen sizes, all from 5" to 11". Will this make developing Android applications harder? Apple has it safe here since they manufacturer all devices that run the iPhone OS: the pods, phones and now the pad so they can easily control and make sure not to loose any customers by introducing a new device. When Apple introduced iPad they had to make sure that all the old iPhone applications would work on the iPad. They solved that neatly by saying that iPhone applications will simply be stretched out to the double size and it would fit on the iPad. Unfortunately Android does not have the same luxury to do this. As I said, I am not an Android developer. Just a curious software developer For you guys who work actively in the Android community, does Google have a solution for this? Will you be able to run phone applications on the tablets? Is there a bridge between the devices? Are there any standardizations or will Android development become even more fragmented? you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Android Developers" group. I've been developing on the simulator, but now I have a real device.
adb can see the device (from adb devices), and I've installed Eclipse/ ADB.
I can't work out how to get debug to use the device instead of the simulator though.

When I plug in the ADP1 and do the following: $ adb devices List of devices attached HT845GZ50887 device But, after connecting via the USB, my ADP1 device goes away after about a minute. I can also load an application from Eclipse to the ADP1 fine. But Eclipse lists in error in the Eclipse consolein about a min with: 2009-03-17 12:06:08 - DeviceMonitor]Connection Failure when starting to monitor device 'HT845GZ50887' : device (HT845GZ50887) request rejected: device not found If I then: $ adb devices List of devices attached Why would the device go away? USB debugging and Stay awake are both enabled. I've found that most of these types of problems are on Windows and have to do with the USB. I"m on Linux, though (gentoo).

I have set up a "Debug Configuration" to debug my Android project. However to get it to debug on a device (HTC Desire) I have to set the Configuration's "Target" to "Manual", there seems to be no way to set in the Debug Configuration that it should go to a selected Device.
It does work, but each debug session I have to "Manually" choose the HTC device from the dialog. Can I set it to always to go the Device?

Does anyone know how to get the eclipse logcat output to switch from emulator to device and back again? I am often developing, and using emulator and device in tandem, mainly because I can trace the http comms on the emulator and not on the device, and logcat gets stuck on whichever is launched first from eclipse. Right now the only way to get logcat output switched over is to restart eclipse, which is a little time-consuming. Anyone know another way to achieve the same thing?

WebView webStep = (WebView)findViewById(R.id.webview); webStep.loadUrl("file:////data//data//com.test//assets//demo.html");
When I run this the UI displays the WebView displays page not found. What am I doing wrong?

My HTC aria shows up when I run adb devices. It even shows the correct serial number. However, I can't find it as a target in eclipse. I am clicking on Run/Run Configurations. It brings up my project and a "target" tab. The emulator is the only thing listed, not my HTC aria.
Is there another step in setup that I have to do?
