Android :: Droid Logging - Clear For Better Performance?
Sep 17, 2010
New to Android and just looked at http://developer.android.com/reference/android/util/Log.html
My question is regarding everything except debug. How do these Log entries get cleared such as Error so that they don't consume space? Also, Is there a way that the logfile can be queried so that it can be sent to a central web service or something for quality purposes etc.?

Someone else had posted some findings between two different kernels and battery power, I can't find the thread - it's late though. Anyhow - the Bekit kernel was recommended as being the ONLY type to use with BB V1, upon initial release. Battery sucked, we all know it. Then I tried SetCPU, and a ton of different configurations - still sucked. I have JuiceDefender and some like it, others don't - I happen to like it and always have. The one thing I noticed initially upon the Bekit/V1 release was that the JuiceDefender widget: (I grabbed this off google, it's the one on the left) was showing a constant 1.15x whereas my battery multiplier previously was a constant 1.95x. This widget simply confirmed that my battery life was sucking bad. Went to the P3 1200LV and my widget made it to 2.15x and I noticed big time. Today I got 13 hours of light/moderate useage (internet, calls, text, email - NO wifi or GPS) and 13 hours got me down to 25%. With the Bekit I was getting roughly 8 hours or so. Dropping 10% an hour on sleep. I also want to add that I tried Chevy's 1200LV and it rebooted my system randomly. The temp on Bekit and P3 are both good though.......

I'm looking into writing an Android game, tough I don't curerntly own an Android device. For those of you who own a device, how does the performance on the emulator relate to real device performance? I'm especially interested in graphics related tasks. This obviously depends on both the machine running the emulator, and the specific device in question, but I'm talking rough numbers here. This question is a duplicate, but since that post is heavily outdated, I figured it's irrelevant by now.

What exactly does HTC Sense Clear Data actually clear? That may be a solution to reverting back to 5 homescreen pages instead of 7 without having to do a factory reset. Just curious as to what I am going to mess up? Will i just have to personalize the homescreen again, put widgets up, reconnect to fb, twitter, myfaves, etc. It's not going remove any 3rd party apps, just make me create new widgets, etc..?

I am trying to go widget-free, using Zeam launcher instead of LauncherPro which seems to randomly have issues for me, I'm just wondering what tips you all may have for getting the best performance possible from your phone. I'm on a Captivate. I care more about in-app performance and stability over bells and whistles. What do you suggest?

What are the most easy mistakes to make that can be performance sinks on Android?
The documentation mentions "some floating point operations" can be "on the order of milliseconds" - has someone tested this?
For the sake of discussion, let's assume its running on a G1/similar device.

Will Android 2.0/2.1 improve performance? The Eris is a cool phone and all but it simply cant keep up with me. There is nothing wrong with my phone also. I have rebooted it and have 80mb free memory. Same thing at Verizon store display phone. It just cant keep up and the lag and waiting periods (1 second or so) are annoying me. Yes one second is alot of lag time when you are trying to do things. It sounds like "only one second" but there are 100 of these one second lag times all over the phone. Im not even an "expert" or "hardcore" user.
Anyon know if Android 2.0 will run faster? Playing a simple MP3 while trying to navigate the phone increases the lag times. Why dosnt the older iphone 3g have these lag issues when they both have equal CPUs?
When will Google and HTC aknowledge the MAJOR issue with the ENTIRE phone slowing down the a crawl once available RAM goes under 30mb. (common with all Android phones) Is it SO hard to have the ability to shutdown apps and automatically remove them from ram when Im done using them? This is the same stupidity Windows Mobile went through back in 2003. Yes I understand that Android will remove unused apps from RAM to make room for the next one but this is where the lag is coming from. The entire phone slows to a crawl unless you free up some memory with 3rd party apps.

My android application works well but it's performance(speed) is slow. In my logcat i saw frequent garbage collection operation like
11-02 15:07:20.647: DEBUG/dalvikvm(12571): GC freed 295 objects / 38448 bytes in 93ms
Is this the reason for low performance? How can i improve my applications performance?

//Authentication try { mService.setUserCredentials(mUsername, mPassword); } catch (AuthenticationException e) { Log.v(TAG, e.toString()); }
but I am getting: ConnectYouTube: com.google.gdata.util.AuthenticationException: Error connecting with login URI. This code seems pretty basic to me and I can't figure out what mistake am I making here.

I have a pretty big library I developed specifically for use in my Android Application. However business logic itself has no dependency on Android. To preserve that, I used Commons Logging throughout this library and it's respective JUnit tests (which I run in Eclipse).
However now that I am starting to integrate it into an Activity which I launch on Android, I am unable to get my logging to work. In Eclipse/JUnit, I had simply pulled in log4j's jar file as well as a log4j.properties file. This doesn't seem to work when deploying to a device. After struggling with attempting to get that to work for several hours, I gave up and tried replacing all my commons logging stuff with android.util.Log. Now I can log on the device.. but all JUnit tests are broken. When any JUnit tries to log using android.util.Log, it throws a RuntimeException 'Stub!'.
I would prefer to revert to my commons logging approach.. if anyone can help with that.. otherwise.. what can I do to get my JUnit test cases running using 'android.util.Log'?

I am no good with hardware concepts. So I have this probably very silly doubt.
I want to add Log to my application. When running on an emulator, I know where to see the Log output - it's visible in the Logcat window of Eclipse.
I want to know where I can see these logs when I run it on a hardware device. I am using following command to load my app on to the device : ./adb install helloWorld.apk
So where will the log be created and under what name?

I just got my Motorola Droid and installed my little accelerometer app right away. All it does is registering a SensorEventListener if the user clicks the start button. It also takes the current time in millis. Every time onSensorChanged() is called, a counter gets bumped. After the user presses the stop button, the listener is unregistered and the time taken again. Using the values from above, I get a samplerate of 9 samples/sec which is WAY too low for what I want to do. The delay of the listener is set to SENSOR_DELAY_FASTEST. The Listener is registered within the main activity and is executed on the main thread of the process (I guess).
The G1 we used before was getting samplerates from around 35 samples/ second, which is way better, but still bad. Any suggestions on why the SensorEventListener performs poorly? The system is Android 2.0. App is compiled using API-Level 5.

At my campus, to get internet connection, I need to log on to a SSH server like they write:.you must manually log in to the firewall server, by establishing a pseudo-tty-less ssh connection to it. The following command can be used on most systems: ssh -T -l [username] [server-URL]I must be logged on to the server for as long as I want internet.Does anyone have any idea how to accomplish this on Android?I have a little experience in writing basic apps for Android, but not much with SSH, any help is appreciated.
/Update
Tried ConnectBot, but the server replies "You may only connect without a pseudo-tty!" at login attempt. I have no idea what "pseudo-tty" is, and I have looked in the settings of ConnectBot, there is no mention of this.
/Update2
Searched for any further info about the pseudo-tty-less function, in connection with OpenSSH. No luck so far, only a definition of the -T parameter which has no equivalent in ConnectBot.

I'm running Eclipse Ganymede on Ubuntu 8.04 and suddenly with no configuration changes as of yesterday am missing logging on the Console Window. I see startup logging when I launch an app but once launched there are no more lines of information. The buttons for Verbose etc are also missing. Log.v messages are not showing. Anyone else seeing this? I'm wondering if one of Ubuntu's updates screwed things up? I may try reinstalling the plug-in or even Eclipse but thought I would check here first.

I have a widget that displays an analog clock. What I would like is for the the widget to write to a database the time when a user clicks on the widget. I've already got the databaseHelper class and have an Activity that displays a screen showing the current date and time and writes the time to a database. The AskTheTime class extends activity and logs to the database in onCreate(). But this means that it displays only the time when the widget was started - not when it was clicked. (I guess this is because I'm starting a pendingIntent) I'm not sure If I should put the database write in another method or if I should be using Intents to do this sort of thing from widgets. Any pointers would be great! I've look at several tutorials for intents but none of them seem very clear to me.
