My android application works well but it's performance(speed) is slow. In my logcat i saw frequent garbage collection operation like

Is this the reason for low performance? How can i improve my applications performance?

Will Android 2.0/2.1 improve performance? The Eris is a cool phone and all but it simply cant keep up with me. There is nothing wrong with my phone also. I have rebooted it and have 80mb free memory. Same thing at Verizon store display phone. It just cant keep up and the lag and waiting periods (1 second or so) are annoying me. Yes one second is alot of lag time when you are trying to do things. It sounds like "only one second" but there are 100 of these one second lag times all over the phone. Im not even an "expert" or "hardcore" user.
Anyon know if Android 2.0 will run faster? Playing a simple MP3 while trying to navigate the phone increases the lag times. Why dosnt the older iphone 3g have these lag issues when they both have equal CPUs?
When will Google and HTC aknowledge the MAJOR issue with the ENTIRE phone slowing down the a crawl once available RAM goes under 30mb. (common with all Android phones) Is it SO hard to have the ability to shutdown apps and automatically remove them from ram when Im done using them? This is the same stupidity Windows Mobile went through back in 2003. Yes I understand that Android will remove unused apps from RAM to make room for the next one but this is where the lag is coming from. The entire phone slows to a crawl unless you free up some memory with 3rd party apps.
I have a couple friends with the Eris that went from loving their phones to hating them shortly after receiving the 2.1 OTA upgrade. They were quite happy with 1.5, but were looking forward to 2.1 - because I bragged about the improvements in the leaks.
I was playing around with their phones last night and they were having serious lag when scrolling, receiving calls and switching from portrait to landscape mode. I turned off window animations completely and those issues went away immediately. The phones are now pretty speedy.
If you're looking for that setting, it's under: Settings > Sound & display > Animation > No animations.
I've been trying VBOs (3D) and I've seen no improvement at all on my Motorola Dext over not using VBOs.I've tried all kinds of configurations, interleaved arrays, by t buffers instead of float buffers, both direct and indirect. My question is, has anybody got any measured improvement in frames per second by using VBOs instead of exactly the same content without VBOs? If and only if so, what were your fps results? And can you therefore show me the "proper" way of doing VBOs instead of not? Has anybody else got exactly the same fps with and without VBOs?

However, on my machine is slow even after that.The 'phone' responds with a 3-4 seconds delay and everything has a huge lag.Is there any way to improve the performance of my laptop (Asus 1201N) is too rusty for the Android emulator? Tried in different emulator resolutions and the result is the same.My laptop has 2 cores with HyperThreading. And it shows as 4 CPU in Device Manager. However, when using the emulator, just one of the graphs is at 100%. Can I do something to make it work multi core?

I'm getting started with Android development, but the emulator performance on my machine leaves much to be desired. In all fairness, my machine is not a powerhouse by any stretch of the imagination.
Short of upgrading my hardware or spending $$$, are there any good tips for improving Android emulator performance?

The game I am working on uses SoundPool for sound effects and MediaPlayer for background music playback. Input happens entirely through the touch screen, with a 20 mS delay after each processed MotionEvent. Sometimes (very rarely) it happens that the background music gets interrupted for a fraction of a second during input. Do you have any ideas how to ensure MediaPlayer continues audio playback during touch screen input? All audio files are in ogg format with various sample and bit rates. Would it be an advantage if all audio files would share the same samplerate and/or bitrate? Do you have any other ideas how to improve audo playback performance?

If I have a project with minimum files in res folder, the project saves quickly, compiles quickly and launches quickly. But if I have a lot of resources, my project is saving, compiling and launching during relatively long period of time. This is really frustrating if you do some minor UI updates, and you have always wait Eclipse to generate R file etc.
Bad performance has plaqued my phone since I updated it with 2.2. It's like it has the desire software on the legends hardware. Gets very sluggish after 1 hour of being turned on.
Not that much running either. Anyone else had problems?
I'm dying here with the 5 minute (non-aGPS assisted) fix times and frequent losses of fix.

I have see others stating that a Class 4 or even Class 6 card on the Euro HTC Hero has improved performance by 400%. Now while I know "400%" is a little out there and even sounds exaggerated, I am curious what this group of people has seen or heard. Does a better MicroSD card improve overall performance?
View 13 Replies View RelatedI've always said that the Behold2 is a great looking phone. It has software/OS issues for sure. However, I don't use the cube so, that bit of nonsense doesn't get in my way. The laggi-ness does get on my nerves because it slows things to a crawl much too often. Sometimes programs or the TouchWiz slider don't open when they should. Frozen-ness happens too.
The scary part is that I have very few third party apps installed. Sometimes the controls for the Media player don't show up at all. So you can see why I am reticent to install anything beyond what I consider to be essentials so as not to over-burden an already beleaguered setup.Considering these known issues, why were we ignored on the Android 1.6 release? We weren't graced with 2.0 either. Now 2.1 is on the horizon and there is no word about its being sent our way. I'd like to think that Samsung or Tmo wants to keep us happy so that we don't jump ship in a few days. I could dump this puppy because I am within my 14 days and am not a happy camper.
Questions: What if anything will an upgraded OS do to improve the performance of our processor? Or, what improvements might we expect with a new OS release?

View 10 Replies View RelatedI am a fan of T-Mobile. I like the ability to pop out my SIM card, and pop it in the next phone of choice, bringing everything with me. This is especially handy due to the fact that I work on a naval base tha does not permit cameraphones of any kind. I like T-Mobile's customer service. They are always polite and know what the hell they are talking about. I'm pondering getting a Galaxy S for T-Mobile.On the other hand, Verizon's new Droid X looks amazing. I love that 4.3" screen. (had the HTC HD2 with the 4.3". Loved it) I would mention the processor and other features, but it seems these two phones, minus the physical keyboard I don't care about, are close to par.Verizon, I must begrudgingly say, also have better coverage where I live. This Droid almost looks appealing emough to stay with Verizon and upgrade.So, do I get the phone I'll probably like more, or get an almost as nice phone with the ability to remove my SIM and have a crappy phone at least at work. ( keep in mind that I have access to a landline at all times at work, anyway.)
View 34 Replies View RelatedI am trying to update Android SDK on Windows XP. For that I open Android SDK and ADV manager and try to get available updates. The HTTPS SSL error appears. Then I go to settings, uncheck the "force https...", then add new site "http://dl-ssl.google.com/android/repository/ repository.xml" (the same as default but with HTTP protocol) then again try to get available updates.
After this step I get the weird error:
XML verification failed for http://dl-ssl.google.com/android/repository/repository.xml. Error: cvc-elt.1: Cannot find the declaration of element 'sdk:sdk- repository'. Failed to fetch URL http://dl-ssl.google.com/android/repository/repository.xml, reason: Unknown

I have had several calls made from my HTC Droid Eris when I have not made the call. The call seems to generate by itself for no reason. Am I doing something wrong ? Is there a way to lock down the 'call' mode so that it can't just make a call by itself. I know it sounds crazy, but I swear that the phone makes calls by itself.

As I have experimented with MANY apps, and home-replacement apps ... I am constantly watching how much available memory I have remaining. I open Task Killer many times throughout the day to check this. For the record, I have approx. 140 apps installed at this time. This hasn't changed all that much over the passed few weeks. I usually have between 38-52M available memory. I really haven't seen it above the 52M mark in a long time. But late last night, I finally finished enough of Sweeter Home to switch over to it full time. When I opened Task Killer, I couldn't believe what I saw! I had 68M available memory! I've been watching it all morning, and it seems to vary between the mid 50s, to the low 70s. So it appears that Sweeter Home Preview 2 is somehow using approx. 20M less memory than Launcher, Home, or Home++ Beta.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI've been reading about the Eris battery life issues on this and other forums. Even with all the tweaks that users have applied to it, the Eris continues to have a rep for bad battery life. Its a bit odd that the Eris gets worse battery life than the Moto Droid which has a larger screen and more processing power, don't you think? I've also read that Eris reception is not that great, that the Droid gets 3G reception when the Eris can't etc.
These issues (battery life and reception) lead me to wonder if they are related. Perhaps the Eris has a weak antenna, or bad antenna placement? This would lead it to have worse reception than other smart phones and also worse battery life because it would have to apply more juice to the antenna to reach the cell phone towers. I've attached a poll to see if there is any correlation between bad battery life and bad reception.
I rooted my droid, and am currently running smoked glass 6. Twice I have noticed my phone heating up (120 F was the most before I pulled the battery) for no apparent reason. I open up auto-killer, kill extra processes, and no difference. No application can be causing this, yet my phone will heat up for no reason. It is not all the time, but I fear it could become a regular thing.
