Android :: App To Control What Type Of Connection Other Apps Use
Jun 27, 2010
BB user here and the only thing holding me back from getting an Android is the fear of going over my 200MB limit on data.
I want to use my Android over 3G for emails and calendar sync. Everything else through WiFi because I am constantly connected to WiFi through my campus/home/work. Only need email on the go.
Is there a program that can control what type of data other apps use?
For instance:
Email: 3G (WiFi Preferred)
Calendar Sync: 3G (WiFi Preferred)
Contact Sync: 3G (WiFi Preferred)
Browser: WiFi Only
YouTube: Wifi Only
Or along these lines.
Does anyone have any app that comes to mind?

I'm looking for an app that is like Gmote but will allow me to communicate with my computer over my 3g internet line instead of wireless. Is there anything like that? will those paid apps that allow one to control their home computer via closed network do it?

In my application I need sometimes send data via http (using HttpClient, HttpGet and HttpPost). Can I choose (from source code) connection which is used? For example, I'd like to use only gprs, not wifi, not bluetooth. Or only wifi, not gprs.

Do you know how to set Content-Type on HttpURLConnection? Following code is on Blackberry and I want the Android equivalent:
connection.setRequestProperty("content-type", "text/plain; charset=utf-8");
connection.setRequestProperty("Host", "192.168.1.36");
connection.setRequestProperty("Expect", "100-continue").

Was looking for some notification type apps, that display a number over the app icon depending on how many unread items you have. For instance say I have 3 unread gmails, it would display a number 3 over the gmail icon.
Something like this app,
SMS Unread Count v1.5.3 Application for Android | Communication
Want something like this that works for google voice, gmail, and facebook. It can be one app or 3 different apps.

I saw few of them on the market. Actually I didn't download any of them yet.(I'm not in the country that can access paid app) But I'm just curious so allow me to ask those have access to these alarm clock apps.
1. User can just turn off the phone. How did the developer prevent user from turning-off the device?
2. If the user CAN turn off the device, how did the developer schedule the 'math' activity to start next time the device is turned on?

I have my app that I am about to release as a beta. It also has bug reporting feature thanks to ACRA.
Now I want to be updating the beta and also fix any bugs that has been reported.
But of course I would want to keep the original released copy so that I can figure out the bugs and what not.
And then as final versions get released I would want to do the same with each released version.
So I need some kind of version control system. I am new to all this so I'm not sure what the best/simplest way to go about doing so.
I'v googled around and there seems to be numerous revision control systems with a lot of features I don't really need.
But as long at its easy to do what I'm looking for I'll be happy with it. I am also using eclipse so something that goes great with it would be nice.
I'm not too sure how it would all work.

I've seen I think one million threads for apps available to turn your Android phone in to a remote control for your PC, but nothing that goes the other way. I've just come from several years of Windows Mobiling and I've always had access to several apps that will allow me to control my phone from my PC.

I want certain apps (games etc) to be exempt from Android's auto closing algorithm, or at least be asked for permission when the system wants to close an inactive app. Is there any app that can do this?

I am knew to android and am absolutely loving it on my Desire, so glad i never went with a certain fruit company
Anyways, i have had a search around here and on the market place and cannot find an app that suits my needs.
Basically, i run timeriffic (which is fantastic by the way) and mostly i use a wi-fi connection. However there are times when i know there is no wi-fi around eg. when i travel to work, so i have it turned off. What i would like to know is if there is any app out there that would allow me to schedule a time to turn on my 3g data connection (i have APNdroid installed and 3g disabled as default) for those periods when my wi-fi is off so i always have a data connection.
I did see the app Data on Demand and this would have been perfect but it did not work with my Desire.
Can anyone using a Desire let me know if they have tried Data on Demand and got it working and what conditions it was working. Can someone recommend an app that meets my needs? I guess if not i will need to contact the developer of timeriffic (who i have seen around here) and see if there is anyway he could intergrate with APNdroid and control 3G data connections.

I have had my evo for about a week now and have had no problems up until now. You know when you want to add a app to the homescreen and hold down until it says add app, add folder, etc. Well wen i press add app it doesn't do anything and sometimes it selects one of the other options. It has been working fine until today, so i am wondering what the problem is.
Ps. I am posting from my evo and just noticed i cannot type the letter d in landscape mode.

I have MIUI v5 installed on Tipo. Apps like Sidebar, NinjaSMS, JuiceDefender do not work, start. Ninja sms app starts, but sms does not produce popup. Sidebar when opened via configuration menu, works, but as soon as I exit the configuration, it ends as well. Same for juice defender. It simple does not work. Other applications work very well...
I suspect something to do with the permission manager or setting.

I have been looking at the ConnectivityManager class documented at http://developer.android.com/reference/android/net/ConnectivityManage... .
I would like to know if an Android application can open a network connection (socket) on a specified network interface [on a device supporting multiple network interface types WiFi, Cellular, WiMax etc] ? I am looking for the capability for an application to open a socket on a given type of network for example over WiFi network or over 3G Cellular Data network.
If this is possible in Android, how would I code this requirement within the API Framework ? The ConnectivityManager enables an application to learn about available network connections and currently categorises them as either TYPE_WIFI or TYPE_MOBILE.
There is a member function in the ConnectivityManager class called requestRouteToHost(int, int) [url] which "Ensure that a network route exists to deliver traffic to the specified host via the specified network interface. An attempt to add a route that already exists is ignored, but treated as successful." Sounds like this would install an IP routing table entry to reach a given host via a specified network interface type (WiFi or Mobile). After calling this would it be sufficient for an application to open a socket and connect to the desired destination address ?
Or perhaps the application needs to bind() a socket to a local address of a network interface of the desired type (WiFi or Mobile) Or by setting a socket-level socket option of SO_DONTROUTE ?

Does anyone know how to set which apps start when the phone is turned on? Mine always has a lot of stuff running that I don't use (e.g. Corporate Calendar and Voice Dialing) and I would like to keep these apps from starting at all. Even when I kill them with the task killer they automatically open back up at some point. I'm just concerned about battery usage.
