HTC EVO 4G :: Free Tethering Without Rooting The Whole Phone?
Jul 6, 2010
Okay, so I've read things about rooting your EVO and one of my favorite aspects is the mobile hotspot/tethering thing you can get for free. I looked through the forums to see if there's an easier way of accomplishing this than rooting my whole phone. I've taken a few computer classes, so I have a decent knowledge base, but rooting just seems way over my head. Anyway, is it possible to do this without rooting the whole EVO?

Can someone please explain to me if tethering is free and legal? Why do some sites say Verizon will charge extra? Will they? Do they? So can you do it free and legally? How do you do it?

For folks who have updated to Froyo (2.2) can you do wired tethering for free ? I travel on occasion (2 or 3 times a year) and this would be a useful feature.

PdaNet has been one of the most popular software for Windows Mobile phones, Palm OS phones and the iPhone. It is now ported to the Android system! Unlike other tethering software that only supports Proxy connections, PdaNet provides you with FULL Internet access so all your email, instant message programs will work without any setting changes on the computer. Just like the old PdaNet, it is as simple as clicking on the PdaNet tray icon and your computer will go online instantly.

I read somewhere that rooted phones can use the mobile hotspot feature that most come with, without Verizon knowing about it. I've also however heard that sometimes it still gets back to the carrier and they cancel your service. I've been using my tethering in very small doses because I'm not sure if big red is monitoring me. If they aren't I want to take full advantage of the tethering feature.

I hate to start a new thread but I searched the forum for an answer with no success. I'M a SWAC customer and my fiance is my sponsor. She is concerned that if I root my Evo and get free Wifi tethering she will possibly get fired if Sprint notices the larger amount of data usage. Has anyone ever heard of a Sprint employee getting fired over rooting their phone? I want to root but not at the expense of getting my fiance fired.

Rooting sounds like a great thing, but right now the only thing I want is WiFi tethering. I found the following instructions to get free WiFi tethering on my Incredible using verizons hotspot app that came with with Froyo upgrade a few months ago.. So far , it works fine (although I do have to reset the wireless adapter on whatever machine I want to tether to the phone, but that only take 2 seconds).
1. Dial ##778
2. Go into edit mode
3. The password is 000000
4. Once in go to M.IP Default Profile and edit DUN NAI from yournumber@dun.vzw3g.com to yournumber@vzw3g.com.
5. Then hit menu and press commit modifications.
6. It should then reboot.
7. FREE WiFi!!!

I searched other WiFi tethering posts and couldn't find the answer. If I get a droid 2 rooted, will the WiFi tethering be free? And will it be unlimited? Or does Verizon stop me or add charges for going over a certain number of gigs?

I'm leaning towards getting an EVO and the "WiFi tethering" seems like an amazing feature, esp. since one can connect up to 8 computers to it. I'm actually looking to upgrade my home DSL internet connection and this might be a good way to do it. However, it stinks this feature costs $30 a month, per line. Is there anyway to get this for free?

I tried wireless Tethering via Bluetooth with the PDANet App and it was an utter failure...i'd get a connection but it was up and down every 5-10 minutes...I can get a solid connection when tethering over USB with PDAnet...But that sucks as it only seems to work with the Charging cable that came with the Eris and not the HUNDREDS of other usb cables i have laying around....
So everyone said...'ROOT!' Its easy to wirelessly Tether when you 'Root!'
you can even use your phone as a hotspot...
So i thought 'Cool, i'd really like to be able to use it as a hotspot!'
I used this rooting system Universal 1 Click Eris App Apk - No PCs, No Scripts Needed, EASY
Noted i now have a new app called 'SuperUser Permission'
Downloaded 'Wireless Tether' from the App store...Set all Permissions on the phone
my Netbook detects NOTHING!
WTF am i doing wrong? It still works under pdanet...ALL i care about is using my phone as a Wireless/wifi hotspot, thats it!

My evo lags horribly on 4G. Scrolling, switching screens, apps, texting, basically every aspect of the phone. It's to the point where the phone is almost unusable on 4G unless I am tethering. I am not rooted and running launcher pro. Anyone else experiencing this or know of a fix?

I am new to the whole android OS and looking to join in very soon. The feature I am mostly interested in is WiFi tethering. I would like you guys to suggest to me the cheapest handset that I can accomplish such a feature with? Whether the phone comes with the application to do it or it can be done via alternate methods [root].

Well I've been a long time user of WinMo and Iphones. The android world is all new to me. I have a few questions that hopefully are quick to answer:
1)Has anyone used the tethering that came built into the phone? That seems to be the only one that works for me. I tried PDAnet but I can't get it to work. But has anyone noticed that the internet is very slow when tethering?
2)I have rooted the phone and would like to remove some of the AT&T bloatware and what not but before I do, how easy is it to restore the phone back to factory? is it a matter of just using the restore to defaults option? Depending on my experience i may or may not return the phone in the 30 days.
3)Does anyone suggest a nice fast IM program. I'm using Palringo but there seems to be a nice big lag in between switching from buddy lists to chats.
