HTC EVO 4G :: Employee Rooting / Wifi Tethering?
Nov 23, 2010I hate to start a new thread but I searched the forum for an answer with no success. I'M a SWAC customer and my fiance is my sponsor. She is concerned that if I root my Evo and get free Wifi tethering she will possibly get fired if Sprint notices the larger amount of data usage. Has anyone ever heard of a Sprint employee getting fired over rooting their phone? I want to root but not at the expense of getting my fiance fired.

Nov 28, 2010Rooting sounds like a great thing, but right now the only thing I want is WiFi tethering. I found the following instructions to get free WiFi tethering on my Incredible using verizons hotspot app that came with with Froyo upgrade a few months ago.. So far , it works fine (although I do have to reset the wireless adapter on whatever machine I want to tether to the phone, but that only take 2 seconds).
1. Dial ##778
2. Go into edit mode
3. The password is 000000
4. Once in go to M.IP Default Profile and edit DUN NAI from yournumber@dun.vzw3g.com to yournumber@vzw3g.com.
5. Then hit menu and press commit modifications.
6. It should then reboot.
7. FREE WiFi!!!

Oct 6, 2010I searched other WiFi tethering posts and couldn't find the answer. If I get a droid 2 rooted, will the WiFi tethering be free? And will it be unlimited? Or does Verizon stop me or add charges for going over a certain number of gigs?

May 10, 2010I recently bought a HTC Legend off ebay since it's not available in Australia but I'm having trouble with the wifi on my home network. It works on occasion but fails most of the time. Sometimes it won't connect at all and just says "unsuccessful" whereas other times it might tell me it's trying to obtain an ip address and then not work.
I've got two computers connected to my wifi as well so it's not my actual connection. Is there such thing as devices competing for wifi? because the few times it's worked was when I was changing my computer's wifi but it sometimes doesn't work even with my computer off!

May 14, 2010I use WiFi but the name is hidden, for some reasons.I manually put the name and the password, but the network is hidden HTC cannot find it and connect to it. I cannot connect manually because when I hit on the name of the connection there is only Forget button.

Nov 15, 2012Download a terminal client, e.g. ConnectBot and connect to your local shell.Enter `su` to become root. (Double check with whoami afterwards). Enable wifi tethering and ensure your data connection is working (connect to VPN)
Run `netcfg` and note your interface names (typically tun0 and wlan0 (ignore m.wlan0 or similar, only take the one with a real mac address), as is on my SGSII)..Double check the subnet for your wlan0 device and enter the following commands:
iptables -A POSTROUTING -s 192.168.43.0/24 -j MASQUERADE -t nat
(setup a postrouting entry for the tethered devices subnet, implementing NAT)
iptables -A FORWARD -j ACCEPT -i wlan0 -o tun0
forward packets from tethered devices across the tunnel
iptables -A FORWARD -j ACCEPT -i tun0 -o wlan0
forward packets from the tunnel to the tethered devices
Note, because you are using NAT, you will need to configure port forwards on your Android device to be able to run servers etc on tethered devices. Unlikely you'll need to worry about that though. Feedback if it worked or not. Posting this now from my home IP, OpenVPN for Android and these iptable rules!

Is there any way to enable tethering if it's not in the ROM?

Dec 24, 2012I want to host an INFRASTRUCTURE (not AD-HOC), otherwise known as a SoftAP (Access point) on wifi. This is possible with many applications, but they all want to use a mobile data connection. Is there any application that allows you to host a SoftAP WITHOUT a 2G/3G/4G connection? This is just for playing over WIFI between a samsung galaxy s3 and an older android 2.1 tablet. These cannot see AdHoc networks.
Anyways, I'm interested in any application that allows hosting of an infrastructure WiFi network without tethering to just host a wireless lan point.

Its like "unable to start wifi" and after that i cant switch this process off, it shows "unable to turn wifi off". So to get rid of this i need to restart phone. So now i cant use wifi. Jun 10, 2010I've only just noticed an issue that after disconnecting from wifi my phone doesn't automatically go back to 3G/2G.
I have to turn the wifi back on and when it can't find one only then does it decide to connect to 3G/2G.
Didn't have this issue before and I'm thinking the latest update (1.31.405.5) has something to do with it.
Anybody else having similar issues?
BTW I'm on the vodafone UK network.

Nov 14, 2010I used to have a samsung moment that was rooted and i used the samsung moment wifi tethering program. I just got the HTC Evo 4G yesterday and rooted it using the Unrevoked method (not sure if there is another). I then downloaded the Wireless Tether for root users. For some reason i cant get anthing to recognize it. I've tried looking for the signal with my ipod and laptop but nothing! What setting needs to be changed? I have tried to find this issue on other posts, but nothing.

Jul 30, 2010While USB tethering over 3G/4G networks doesn't work unless you pay for the $30/mo hotspot feature (which I still cannot get Sprint to admit is a stupid name since I don't want a hotspot, only tethering, but I digress), you can tether and use the phone's WiFi connection.
Why would you want to? Well, I have a laptop that requires a USB dongle and now I have one less thing to carry. OK, not the best reason, but I found it interesting.
