when i plug my phone in to charge or access data over usb i see the option, but if i click it it requires me to log in.. what exactly is the deal with that? is it trying to charge me? can third party apps share net access across usb?
Can someone please explain to me if tethering is free and legal? Why do some sites say Verizon will charge extra? Will they? Do they? So can you do it free and legally? How do you do it?

View 11 Replies View RelatedOkay, so I've read things about rooting your EVO and one of my favorite aspects is the mobile hotspot/tethering thing you can get for free. I looked through the forums to see if there's an easier way of accomplishing this than rooting my whole phone. I've taken a few computer classes, so I have a decent knowledge base, but rooting just seems way over my head. Anyway, is it possible to do this without rooting the whole EVO?

PdaNet has been one of the most popular software for Windows Mobile phones, Palm OS phones and the iPhone. It is now ported to the Android system! Unlike other tethering software that only supports Proxy connections, PdaNet provides you with FULL Internet access so all your email, instant message programs will work without any setting changes on the computer. Just like the old PdaNet, it is as simple as clicking on the PdaNet tray icon and your computer will go online instantly.

I read somewhere that rooted phones can use the mobile hotspot feature that most come with, without Verizon knowing about it. I've also however heard that sometimes it still gets back to the carrier and they cancel your service. I've been using my tethering in very small doses because I'm not sure if big red is monitoring me. If they aren't I want to take full advantage of the tethering feature.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm leaning towards getting an EVO and the "WiFi tethering" seems like an amazing feature, esp. since one can connect up to 8 computers to it. I'm actually looking to upgrade my home DSL internet connection and this might be a good way to do it. However, it stinks this feature costs $30 a month, per line. Is there anyway to get this for free?
View 9 Replies View RelatedIs this possible? The only way I could see it working is if the "Install other OS" option was still on the ps3 and then just installing pdanet onto it but is there anyway to do that without installing a different operating system?

View 12 Replies View RelatedI don't have a data plan and neither do I have wireless at work. I'm wondering if there was someway my phone could piggy back on my laptop which is connected to my company network? Something like tethering but the other way around, laptop to phone instead of phone to laptop?
View 3 Replies View RelatedHas anyone tried tethering via USB in Linux? When I plug my phone in and choose internet sharing and select done the 3G connection immediately disappears and it tells me my sprint PCS vision user name/password is not correct even though 3G works fine on my phone. I'm given to understand it should just immediately connect without any configuration in Ubuntu 10.04. Anyone else have any input?
View 1 Replies View Relatedmy htc evo is rooted, i have titanium backup and you need root for that application to work so my phone is rooted. i downloaded the wireless tethering app. succesfully but when i turn on tethering it the down speed stays at 0.4kB, 0.0kbps and the up speed stays at 0.1kB, 0.0kbps. it also used to pop up as a wireless connection but it wouldnt connect. now i just re-downloaded the app and it does the same exact thing but the wireless network doesnt show up.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI rooted my phone, followed the idiots guide over at XDA. Now i got the latest version of wireless Tether and when i push "press to start tether" it just tells me unable to tether. What do i have to do?
View 7 Replies View RelatedSo I just canceled my internet at my house after a frustrating experience with the cable company... so now I'm exclusively relying on the Evo for internet. My question is, is there any way to tether at 4g speeds? Either wired or wireless? I think I've read that the wireless tether app has not really been coded for 4g so the speeds do not come even close to typical 4g speeds. I also would rather avoid pdanet and easy tether because I don't want to pay in order to get full access. I've done some research in the matter but still have things kinda muddy in my mind.
View 17 Replies View RelatedI know Sprint's hotspot feature is to use the EVO "Wirelessly" with up to 8 diff. devices and that is what the $30 charge is for if you want to use that feature. It's my understanding that "Tethering" is a different thing where u directly connect your EVO to a laptop and use the "Internet Sharing" mode that way with only that device. I don't pay the extra $30 so i dont have hotspot for my EVO but I am able to Tether my phone to my laptop. Ive read that tethering is not allowed on the sprint network without purchasing the Hotspot feature and i can have my contract terminated if i continue to use tethering with my EVO. IS THAT TRUE? Is the tethering feature with the EVO at this point, just a feature that has not been disabled or patched yet or is it infact supported by sprint without needing to buy the Sprint Hotspot feature?????? And if it is freely available is there a cap to how much data i can use while tethering? cause you know, i do pay the damn """ $10 premium charge""" for each EVO on my account..
View 38 Replies View RelatedI am having trouble tethering my phone to my computer via pdaNet and bluetooth (USB works fine). I've seen several threads and tried a lot of things, but nothing seems to solve my problem. I have tried under Mac OS X and Win XP...
Under Mac OS X, it detects my phone and pairs successfully. It gets to the point where it says "Select the services you want to use with your mobile phone" and I check "Access the Internet with your phone's data connection." When I hit continue, it say "Configuring services..." forever, and it never connects.
Under Win XP (same machine), in my Network Settings, I tried to search for my phone and it doesn't find my device. Alternatively, if I go to Control Panel -> Bluetooth, it will pair. However I then go to Properties, Services and check "Dial-Up Networking", hit OK, and it says "The parameter is incorrect"
So basically the problem is that although my phone and computer can see each other via bluetooth, the DUN service from my phone isn't recognized by my computer. I have tried this with another computer as well, with no luck. Is there a setting on my phone that I need to change in order to get this working?
I have an htc evo I got on June 20th. I've never accepted any of the updates. The phone isn't rooted. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04. How do I use my phone to connect my linux laptop or pc to the internet? I'm looking for the simplest way that doesn't require more fees. Inspite of being a linux user I'm not exceptionally savvy so a step by step would help me out a lot.

As the HTC Sync software controls the PC end of the tether connection, and it's not available on the Mac, this is annoying.
