I was wondering if there is alternative to holding down home button to switch between apps. I was wishing that there is some app that shows all active app and if we click on it, it gets opened. Is there anything like that? Holding down home button only shows recently opened apps. Also, I am not fans of holding down buttons.

I'm making an Android Java app game (although this question applies to all languages really) and hope to release the first version soon. I'm nervous about how I save data in my game. My problem is that, if in a later update, I decide to store more data or store the same data in a different way, I need to be careful I don't lose or corrupt data for users that upgrade (i.e. I want users to be able to use data created by an old version in the new version, like their high scores from before). For example, say I want to save high scores in version 1.

I have had my HTC Desire for about 2 months now and I have just accidentally learned that if you hold down the home button for about a second or 2, it brings up a neat little 'last used apps' screen. I am using LP so i don't know if it is part of Android or the launcher but I found this pretty neat.

1. sometimes when you unlock the screen you get this weird static screen for like half a second
2. holding down the menu button still doesnt do anything
3. when you're charging your phone it doesnt show the percentage
4. cant uninstall where's waldo and midnight bowling.
5. sometimes you have to push the actual unlock button for the screen to turn on instead of any of the buttons (i do this to check the time)
never had the SD card or vibrating problems so i dunno if they got completely fixed.

Is there any way to make it so when i press and hold the power button and choose either silent or vibrant only that it will also mute media? I am hoping for the ability to change something through adb shell or something because I use the power button method all the time I just really want it to mute/unmute the media volume too.

I have recently upgraded to Android 4.0.4 on my samsung galaxy s2. I used the ressurection remix rom 1.9
I have noticed that although holding down the menu button will go to google search from the main screen, it no longer works in certain apps that used to work before the upgrade. In fact it doesnt seem to work in any apps.

What exactly does HTC Sense Clear Data actually clear? That may be a solution to reverting back to 5 homescreen pages instead of 7 without having to do a factory reset. Just curious as to what I am going to mess up? Will i just have to personalize the homescreen again, put widgets up, reconnect to fb, twitter, myfaves, etc. It's not going remove any 3rd party apps, just make me create new widgets, etc..?

When clicking and holding the home button the very useful modal dialogue appears showing the list of recently used programs/applications. Unfortunately, most of the time it appears and then disappears again. It is very annoying and makes this feature useless.
I am using LauncherPro on my Android 2.1 (CyanogenMod 5.0.8 DS), but with ADW launcher it showed the same behaviour.

Current version of Android (4.2.2).
Want to: run apps that demand to have WiFi on+connected, even when I'm on 3G/4G. (Specifically, I'd be happy if I could get Xfinity TV Player to run on my rooted stock Nexus 4 over HSPA, but again, hoping this thread will attract info about tricking apps in the general case.)
Tried:
A) qaWifiOnlyMode.txt,
B) running WiFi Tether For Root Users and quickly turning wifi on after launching. Neither worked.

I'm developing an app that is a shell in which a user will purchase and load business information from 29 separate, purchasable regions in the US. These regions are database driven, and I'm still modifying the database for 2014 data. This is a test environment. The problem I'm having is that once I've simulated the purchase of a region (let's say, Chicago), my device apparently caches that data, so that when I update the database, the updates don't push through. I've tried clearing the cache on the app, erasing all the app data, and disabling the Backup & Restore feature on the device, then completely uninstalling the APK. But when I reinstall a the APK from scratch, it installs with the Chicago region already showing as having been purchased, still showing the old database data.
how can I get the APK to reinstall as if for the very first time, with no previous purchases or downloads, so that it pulls fresh data from the DB?

I really need to free up some space for future downloads. Before I just go ahead and clear data for random apps there are a few I'm quite sceptical about doing this to in-case it deletes certain things that can take a while to get back to the way it was before, if at all.
*HTC SENSE 2.42MB I don't use sense I use LauncherPro and don't plan on going back to sense in the near future.
*Facebook 2.52MB
*Facebook for HTC Sense 9.08MB <- I don't use this, I only use the above Dloadable app from the market.
*Google Maps 1.48MB
*Contract storage 9.52MB really? HOW? if i was to remove all my contacts and save them to my sim instead would this sort out the issue? I've noticed over time that certain contacts I have like 10 duplicates for, I think this is because I had difficulty getting facebook profile pics as contact pics. Is there away for me to go through every contact and delete these unneeded, useless contacts?
Are the main ones id like to find out about.
The following few apps I'm guessing if I clear this data it will remove certain settings from my phone but I would still like some info on this if possible.
*Settings 14.74MB
*Astro File Manager 96.00KB Manage space? what will that do?
*FolderOrganizer 1.11MB im guessing that will remove folders & icons if i was to clear this data?

I have a Motorola XT626 (IronRock) its a dual sim (Iden/gsm-3g) with android 2.3.6.At first time, both SIMs, nextel and the other carrier, if putted from the beginning there is no problem. But when trying to change the SIM, to use an other phone number or upgrading the SIM model. It forces to erase private data.Message says: "A new SIM card is being used. All private data must be cleared before you can continue"If no option its selected it erases it, hate to do a backup to just change the SIM or imposible to change the SIM on the fly.Its Rooted, so looking forward to edit any file and line in the db files to fix this problem.

So, the moron at the Verizon store who was activating my replacement Droid decided to import or retrieve contact data from my broken droid / SD card....he didn't know that it handled all the contacts from the cloud. As soon as I entered my gmail login it imported all my contacts and so, now I have contacts with duplicate data and some contacts that are now just phone numbers. I tried deleting the contact data and resyncing but it appears to be grabbing this duplicate data from somewhere. All my contacts are CLEAN in gmail when viewed online. But if I look on the phone, when go to edit them each person has 1 contact with multiple google contacts merged together. The problem is, any time I go to search contacts or enter a contact in email or create a contact shortcut, all of them are appearing twice in the selection list.
I went through each contact and split the merges, essentially deleting the dupes, but they are still appearing multiple times in the search/selection lists....and when I resync the dupes come back. I don't see anything that looks like contact data/backup on the SD card and don't know if that is something that can be deleted from the phone's memory or not?
[I know I can deleted all the dupes, but my concern is that I did this already and they came back. Is this data stored anywhere else that it might be pulling it from again when I sync?]

All activities in my application require a user to be logged-in to view. Users can log out from almost any activity. This is a requirement of the application. At any point if the user logs-out, I want to send the user to the Login Activity. At this point I want this activity to be at the bottom of the history stack so that pressing the "back" button returns the user to Android's home screen.
I've seen this question asked a few different places, all answered with similar answers (that I outline here), but I want to pose it here to collect feedback. I've tried opening the Login activity by setting its Intent flags to FLAG_ACTIVITY_CLEAR_TOP which seems to do as is outlined in the documentation, but does not achieve my goal of placing the Login activity at the bottom of the history stack, and preventing the user from navigating back to previously-seen logged-in activities. I also tried using android: launchMode ="singleTop" for the Login activity in the manifest, but this does not accomplish my goal either (and seems to have no effect anyway). I believe I need to either clear the history stack, or finish all previously- opened activities. One option is to have each activity's onCreate check logged-in status, and finish() if not logged-in. I do not like this option, as the back button will still be available for use, navigating back as activities close themselves. The next option is to maintain a LinkedList of references to all open activities that is statically accessible from everywhere (perhaps using weak references). On logout I will access this list and iterate over all previously-opened activities, invoking finish() on each one. I'll probably begin implementing this method soon.
I'd rather use some Intent flag trickery to accomplish this, however. I'd be beyond happy to find that I can fulfill my application's requirements without having to use either of the two methods that I've outlined above. Is there a way to accomplish this by using Intent or manifest settings, or is my second option, maintaining a LinkedList of opened activities the best option? Or is there another option that I'm completely overlooking?

I did a search and didn't find anything recent...is there a program that works with 2.1 that will automatically clear the caches for you instead of having to go into the settings and do them one by one? Also, what does the "clear data" option do?
