HTC Desire :: Exchange Subfolders - Alternatives To Touchdown?
Apr 10, 2010
I need my Exchange subfolders to synchronise automatically, and I need to receive notifications when a new mail arrives in any of the subfolders.
So far, the only app I've found that manages this properly is Touchdown. I'm in the trial period, and may end up buying it, but I'm hoping that there's another application out there that works as well, but has better design and UI. Does anyone know of one?
I used RoadSync on my Nokia, and was looking for the Android version on the market (it does exist, apparently), but can't find it. It might have been taken off, or perhaps doesn't work with v2.1.

#1 - I cannot believe how amazingly sucky the stock email program is for the EVO - or for Android. Good christ, what toolbox decided to have a base email program where you cannot even set up filters.... This leads to spending $20 to get an app that any Blackberry does in it's sleep....
#2 - I see that for Exchange by Touchdown - there is a message "Don't install on Incredible, use Exchange for Android"As the Evo is pretty similar to the Incredible - should I just use "Exchange for Android" and not TD?

I am waiting for my Aria to be delivered. Has anybody used the native exchange mail on 2.1? How does it perform? I heard a lot of good things about Touchdown for exchange. Can I get that with the 3rd party restrictions that ATT has on the android market? If so I remember reading about a work around but can't remember what it was.

I just received my Incredible yesterday to replace my Blackberry Storm. I cannot complete the Exchange Activesync setup because it says it cannot contact the Exchange server. I've tried numerous times: placing https:// in-front of the server name, putting <<domain>><<username>> in the username field while keeping the domain field blank, checking and unchecking the SSL box. Nothing is working.
So I downloaded Touchdown. I entered the same exact settings that I believe should have worked for the Mail app and Touchdown connects just fine. It gives you the option to connect via Activesync only, Exchange 2007 or Exchange 2003. I selected Activesync and I'm seeing all my emails, contacts and appointments.
Is there something on the server side that could be preventing me from setting up the HTC Mail app. This is a major deal breaker for me. I guess, I could use Touchdown but I'd prefer not to.

I've been using Touchdown trial for a few days now and can't seem to find an answer to my question in the other threads. When I have an e-mail that I want to file in an exchange folder all of my folders show up on the phone and I am able to send the e-mail to any folder in my inbox on the server. My question: Is there a way to check my folders from the Droid after I have filed e-mails there? I went into settings and assumed that if the inbox was syncing that I would be able to pull up the other folders. I added a couple of the folders to sync under advanced settings and they show up but when I try to open them up there aren't any e-mails.

For those who have tried to sync up to their work exchange server that requires a downloaded pin from the respective server has probably noticed that this is unable to accomplish using the native Eris app. I was told to download Touchdown, but I have a problem paying for something Eris should have done in the first place. Any other free apps out there or is the Eris update supposed to fix this.

Say you are in your office, sitting at your computer. So you don't need your phone to notify you every time you get an Exchange email, or every time you have an Exchange calendar event, because its all popping up right on your computer screen anyways. But you do still want to receive notifications for your non-Exchange email accounts and calendar events (e.g., Gmail).
Can Touchdown be closed or "turned off" (or maybe just killed using a task killer) while you are at work, so you do not receive notifications about Exchange emails and calendars, but you do still receive notifications for all your other accounts? And then as soon as you leave the office you can just re-load Touchdown so that you start getting phone notifications again for your Exchange account?
Is there an easy way to accomplish this without using Touchdown if you are using just the native Exchange ActiveSync built into Android (sense UI)?
I hate getting notifications on my phone 2 seconds after I've received them in the Outlook on my work computer, so this is why I ask these questions. With BlackBerry (what I currently have, but I want to switch to HTC Incredible) it is easy to manage notifications this way, but I'm curious if I can do it on Android.

Just wondering if there are any tips or suggestions for using "Touchdown" exchange in place of the Gmail account, especially to avoid getting duplicate msg alerts for new mail?Once set up in Touchdown, should one delete the email account set-up in messaging? Also, I have a second gmail account for personal mail but for now have only setup my work account in Touchdown. Should I do the same for this account in Touchdown - Exchange?

I have never been able to sync past calendar events using the stock 2.1 Exchange (Outlook) sync. I only get past events for the last month. Yes, I have "sync all events" turned on. Any calendar event older than 30 days will not display or sync.
I spent 1.5 hours with Motorolla tech support today (live chat) trying to solve this to no avail. The tech said the problem is on my company's Exchange server. I said the bug is in Android 2.1. Example: my iPod touch syncs everything with the Exchange server including past events.
Just now I installed Touchdown on my Droid X. Everything sync'ed - all events, past, present and future. They display nicely in the Touchdown calendar display.
These past events still will not display in any of the stock calendars.

Before the update yesterday, I was able to search my contacts by using the search button on the Droid, and then could dial the contact. After the 2.0.1 update, and after updating Touchdown for Exchange to the newest release, same problem.
I tried copying the contacts to the phone book, and the process seems to have taken place, but I have no idea where those contacts are....can't find them in the phone book.

Two quick questions that will help me decide between Native Exchange and Touchdown (or possibly another app all together):
1) Is there a way to override the password requirement for Native Exchange? I'd prefer to not have to enter a p/w every time my phone locks.
2)Is anyone else having issues with Touchdown not rendering their messages properly? Mine are cut off even with the smallest font setting and I cannot side scroll to see the rest of the message. Also as I scroll down into the threaded messages the screen above goes white.

Does anyone know how to create subfolders? I created a folder to locate all of my Directions & Navigations shortcuts. I'd like to create subfolders to organize them. I can't seem to figure this out. I also tried searching for the folder name using Astro and making sure I was pointed at the device not the sdcard and came up empty. That actually brings up another questions. If I create a directory on one of the home screens. What is the path to that directory?

I have a folder labeled "Music Videos" for all my music videos. I want to make sub folders for each band (ac/dc/, beatles, etc) I can do it on the sd card when my phone is connected to the computer, but when I disconnect it and look in gallery on the phone, the Music Videos folder does not appear. So, I had to make a folder for each band instead Videos - Beatles, Videos - ac/dc etc) its a pain. Has anybody tried the sub folder route? or isn't Froyo sophisticated enough to do this?

I just received my Sprint Hero in the mail, love it so far, but I am not able to sync up my outlook subfolders. I had the HTC Tocuh Pro 2, was able to sync my subfolders, but it was too sluggish and I only got it because it had Microsoft outlook. I have certain rules set that allow me to have certain incoming emails sent to certain folders so that I can keep up with them. Seems like the only way for me to get the emails from certain individuals on my phone is to take the rules off from my desktop and have them come in with all my other mail. I would hate to do this.

I was wondering if any one encountered the same issue. I connected my phone to a corporate exchange server via activesync and everything is working fine for all the generic folders(inbox, send, deleted etc...), but i have outlook rules set up that emails get routed to various subfolders under inbox(NOT PST) based on who the sender is and I never receive any notifications for those messages. so i have to manually browse all those folders to see if i have any new mail. i tried touchdown for exchange, but really didn't like its look and feel...

The FileObserver class doesn't appear to be working as advertised.
I created a class extending the FileObserver class. I initialize the class to watch the path of the sdcard as returned from the Android Environment.getExternalStorageDirectory function. Everything seems to work perfectly as long as the files are in the ROOTof the sdcard. Any files within SUB-FOLDERS of the sdcard are NOT returned to my public void onEvent(int event, String path) callback in my FileObserver class.
The docs say files in subfolders should be returned to the onEvent() callback but it's not happening. Note, I've only tested on the Android simulator (v2.2) since I do not yet have access to a device. Maybe this is a bug specific to the simulator?

After a 3 year stint with Windows Phone I've come back to Android with the purchase of a Galaxy S4, however the transition back hasn't been entirely smooth.
how android organizes the photo gallery. Doesn't matter the app, they all seem to organize in a similar way - find all folders with photos in it, list every folder as a separate album. That's great, but I don't want that.
On my Lumia 920 I had my photos organized like this. And on the device, they show up like this:I have folders with only subfolders as content. And they retain this organization in the photo viewer. I cannot find a single app that does this. I've tried Scalado, QuickPic, Just Pictures, Android ICS Gallery, Samsung Gallery, Customization Android 3D Gallery - nothing.
Is this just how the media scanner works? Any way to organize into subfolders within a gallery app? Is there any app that allows me to custom define my own setup? I wouldn't mind having to configure a text file to my setup, I just want it organized.
This is how BB, iOS, WP, and almost every other mobile OS organizes photos. The application F-Stop Media Gallery on the android marketplace allows the construction of custom albums. Although you cannot specify covers for the empty albums containing sub-albums, I've found a decent workaround.
With sub-albums looking like this. In order to get some form of album cover, you need images in the folder. However it will take the top 4 images and use those, so if you want a phone for the whole cover you'll need to split it up into 4 quadrants. Or just do 1 image and deal with it being small. Also, albums within other albums don't take on covers for some reason. I contacted the device and he said this was intentional but they were looking to change this in the future.
Albums need to be manually defined, which is a tad irritating but it works alright once you have it set up.

I got my HTC Desire last week and Synced it with our Kerio Mail Server 6.7.0 patch 1. Had to add the line to allow unsupported devices as it was giving some connection issues and then worked fine after that. The problem has been with the syncing of the contacts. It syncs fine for about the first few syncs and then it gives an error on the phone "failed to connect to the server" But it syncs mail and the calendar perfectly. The issue is that the syncing of the contacts is second on the list of 3 items to sync as per the phone. So it syncs mail first - fine, contacts second - error and then calendar - fine. I removed my contacts from my mail on the server and it still didn't update on the phone. So wasn't communicating with the server as per the error. If I delete my contacts on the phone, it then connects fine to the server and I get my contacts back. Works fine for about a few syncs and then without adding or deleting any contacts I get the error message back.

Got my Desire hooked up to Exchange without problems and it all works, with the exception of push emails. Basically new emails only arrive when the phone initiates a sync.
I have the relevant options enabled on the server and can't see anything related to push on the handset so I'm a bit lost as to why this doesn't work.

I set up an exchange activeync account on my new HTC desire. I encounter a strange behaviour with it. After synchronizing it shows only few folders from my mail box (around 5) where i got around 50. I tried to delete the account and recreate it -> no change I give a try to Touchdown app, and it retrieve all folders. I don't want to use another app than the one given with my HTC, so here is why I post this topic.
