Android :: Thoughts On SD Cards

Jul 26, 2010

After reading a lot in the eris forum about the SD Card debate, I've decided to drop the cash on a 32GB card. However, since I haven't made the purchase yet, I was wondering what some of you thought of the brands. There is a class 2 sandisk out there a brand I know very well, but its only a class two. Then there are two brands I have never heard of: 3C and Topram. Has anybody had any experience with these brands? If so, what do you think of them? The cards are cheaper and faster (in theory) than the sandisk, but if it's a bad brand, then I don't think it'll be worth it.

Motorola Droid :: Thoughts On Kernels

Sep 27, 2010

Have been testing kernels the past few days, have a few thoughts:I've tried the Slayher v1.6 kernel, ChevyNo1's ULV, jdflg's, and p3droid's, all 1200mhz. With all kernels set to "on demand", I can't say for sure if any one gives more battery life than any other, my usage is too variable. P3Droid's are 125mhz base clock, while the others are 250 or 300mhz, but there wasn't an obvious difference with my use. I'm guessing at low clocks, processor drain is negligible unless you're going to be in a semi-sleep state for a long time. All kernels bench about the same, and P3Droid's don't feel any slower even with the lower base clock, which suggests to me that most kernel makers should consider including a sub-200mhz option. Kernels with "interactive governor" subjectively feel slightly faster when using interactive governor, but battery life is definitely a little shorter. All kernels seem equally stable. All kernels seem to run about the same temperature, with maybe a very slight edge to Chevy's ULV kernel (~2c loaded). Temperature monitoring is not very accurate. I turned on my phone earlier in class, to see a 13c CPU temp. That's about 8-10c below ambient. This is consistent on all kernels I have tried.

Samsung I7500 :: Random Thoughts On Improving UI

Nov 25, 2009

1. The circle that rotates while something is loading should never stutter, if it does something is not as it should be. It should be in its own separate thread and have enough resources for its simple task.

2. Sometimes there is a lag between tapping an icon and the application launching. The phone should keep the yellow background under the icon that is about to launch until it is launched. That way the user would know that the press was registered and no additional press is needed.

In general it is preferable to sacrifice almost everything to maintain a responsive UI. If that means that applications will take longer to load or will run slower, fine. One thing that has been discovered with the web is that people don't mind waiting, but they do mind not having accurate and quick feedback about what they have done and what is going on.

Android :: Why Cards Are Stacked Against Droid?

Aug 17, 2010

UP front just let me say I "hope" the Android stomps Apple. That said, I think it will have a rough time of doing so. Why? Well, for one the primary purveyor of Android does not derive a primary source of income from their efforts. Second, the companies providing Androids have no real reason nor ability to continually refine Android proper. And that last point really bugs me. The phone manufactures are not software developers and that leads to two issues, 1) they don't understand what it takes to develop software and 2) they are motivated to not do so. By point number 2 I mean they make money pumping out new phones. If they provide new things in currently deployed phones they are just cutting themselves out of revenue. What is the solution? Well for one how about they start charging for OS upgrades just like MS and Apple do? Would the market bear this?

I released an app on the Android market that I've since had to take down because approximately half of the comments were people complaining of damaged SD cards. I've gone over the code a few times and can't find anything that could damage an SD card. All that happens that involves external storage is the saving of streams as images, which then get read into ImageView's.

Is there an app that I can use to maintain the balances of multiple credit cards? The app does not need to be able to directly access the credit card's balances online (straight thru online banking), but I must be able to add transactions and update it manually. Android :: Wallet App That Uses Phone's Camera To Scan Cards For Backup?

Sep 1, 2010

Is anyone aware of a wallet app that uses the phone's camera to scan cards for backup? i don't really relish the idea of manually entering all my card nos. and info when the camera scanner function works so well recognizing business cards.

you know, I'd like to slap my credit card on the table, open the app and scan the card. the app should recognize the cc logo (mc, visa, discover, etc), card no., exp. date and prompt me for the verification no. on the back.

the app should be able to recognize most of the card types that people typically keep in the wallets: drivers license, library card, health ins, auto ins., loyalty cards. for those that it doesn't recognize by scan, the user should be able to select from a list or enter a "custom" type.

i haven't found anything like this. does one exist?

this may not be the right place for it, but i dont know where else to go. I have 2 micro sd cards. one a 4gig that i used in my g1 and a 8gig that i use in my hero. in my hero the 8gig says damaged sd card. it happened last night while trying to copy a bunch of stuff from laptop and it crashed during it. says i need to format it, but it just locks up phone and i have to pull battery out to restart. tried to do it from windows, but it wont even mount. so i was going to try to use my old 4gig from my g1 that i could never delete or add any files to. no luck there either. i can access it and copy files and they will be there, but then they just disapeer. i tried formating in windows and it formats and shows empty, but then everything comes back. is there a way to fix these cards like a formating program or something.
