Samsung I7500 :: Random Thoughts On Improving UI
Nov 25, 2009
1. The circle that rotates while something is loading should never stutter, if it does something is not as it should be. It should be in its own separate thread and have enough resources for its simple task.
2. Sometimes there is a lag between tapping an icon and the application launching. The phone should keep the yellow background under the icon that is about to launch until it is launched. That way the user would know that the press was registered and no additional press is needed.
In general it is preferable to sacrifice almost everything to maintain a responsive UI. If that means that applications will take longer to load or will run slower, fine. One thing that has been discovered with the web is that people don't mind waiting, but they do mind not having accurate and quick feedback about what they have done and what is going on.

Since I recently found out a few culprits that were waking up my phone from sleep and they were not so obvious as to what they were here's a quick list of apps I have on the phone and it sleeps properly.48 hours after the last charge and I am at 65%! Overnight it drops by only 1-2%!The application that was waking my phone was TasKiller! I have since removed it.

Like the rest we are waiting for Epic release. Some of us are stuck with our phones. Some can upgrades. But for those that want to upgrade to the Epic are you paying out of pocket? Are you able to upgrade now? Is your upgrade in October like many of or September? What will you do? Has Sprint ever given you an early upgrade and if so by how far from your actual upgrade date?

I converted a movie avi file to mp4 using the free "any video converter". As the converter's website recommends, I set the frame to 1280x720. But when watching the movie, they're is some chopiness and the quality is not as good like when watching a you tube clip in hd. Is there anything I can do to increase the video quality?

The Samsung i7500 Galaxy is, except the support from Samsung itself, a great Android smartphone with a very good (the best?) price for value. It's with 11,9mm the second slimmest Android phone after Nexus One with 11,5mm (right?) and has unlike the HTC phones a flash light and build in storage of 8GB. On most sites the Galaxy is (one of) the cheapest Android phones, I wonder if it's because Samsung is cheaper or HTC/Motorola more expensive by itself?
I personally would compare the i7500 with the HTC Hero, although in my opinion the i7500 still has a much better price for value.
Is it even possible to define if and which Android phone is a low, middle, or high-end smartphone?
Sure, it also depends for what purposes you bought and use your phone, but I still wonder were the i7500 would be if 1=low and 10=high end Android phone, and if there even is a number 10? I also think that the D-Pad is a big plus and not a minus in comparison to the scroll ball from HTC.

After reading a lot in the eris forum about the SD Card debate, I've decided to drop the cash on a 32GB card. However, since I haven't made the purchase yet, I was wondering what some of you thought of the brands. There is a class 2 sandisk out there a brand I know very well, but its only a class two. Then there are two brands I have never heard of: 3C and Topram. Has anybody had any experience with these brands? If so, what do you think of them? The cards are cheaper and faster (in theory) than the sandisk, but if it's a bad brand, then I don't think it'll be worth it.

Does GAOSP Froyo support live wallpapers for i7500? If yes, can you recommend some that seem to run fine without (major) slowdown? I would suspect that the CPU is too slow to run most live wallpapers, but there might be some neat ones that are good to go?

Have been testing kernels the past few days, have a few thoughts:I've tried the Slayher v1.6 kernel, ChevyNo1's ULV, jdflg's, and p3droid's, all 1200mhz. With all kernels set to "on demand", I can't say for sure if any one gives more battery life than any other, my usage is too variable. P3Droid's are 125mhz base clock, while the others are 250 or 300mhz, but there wasn't an obvious difference with my use. I'm guessing at low clocks, processor drain is negligible unless you're going to be in a semi-sleep state for a long time. All kernels bench about the same, and P3Droid's don't feel any slower even with the lower base clock, which suggests to me that most kernel makers should consider including a sub-200mhz option. Kernels with "interactive governor" subjectively feel slightly faster when using interactive governor, but battery life is definitely a little shorter. All kernels seem equally stable. All kernels seem to run about the same temperature, with maybe a very slight edge to Chevy's ULV kernel (~2c loaded). Temperature monitoring is not very accurate. I turned on my phone earlier in class, to see a 13c CPU temp. That's about 8-10c below ambient. This is consistent on all kernels I have tried.

Well now that shops finally sell it and more and more people have it by now, I thought to put this kind of thread up for everyone to comment their initial impressions and feelings about the phone, I am sure all of us who are still waiting for it are anxious to read your thoughts! Was it everything you hoped for, which things could have been done better? What good there is , what bad ?

Sorry if this thread seems inconsequential but I have been rendering myselves sleepless nights over the past couple of days ( and nights ) due to my inability to choose between the above two said android phones. I like the i5700 for its zippy 800 MHz processor and that its got the 2.1 update. I like the i7500 for its 5 MP camera and flash + a larger screen to play with I would have gone in for the i7500 but have been hearing about Samsung deciding against not updating it to version 2.1 which can off course be done taking the un-official channel. Moreover the 528 Mhz processor is certainly lagging.
But still I see people in here Going after the i7500 .... Adding to it there is more threads and discussions going around on the i7500 as compared to the i5700. Am I missing something in the i7500 or is it just that i am a stupid newbie ... I have gone through many many pages of information on this thread before posting this query.

I've had my Incredible since 4/28, and everything has been working smoothly up until about last Thursday night when it just restarted out of the blue while I was listening to music. Then right after it booted up, it restarted again, then again about seven more times. I got fed up and took out the SD card and it seemed to stop after that, so I haven't put the SD card back in since then.
Just now, Wednesday, about a week later, I was browsing around on the internet and all of a sudden, it restarted, and then again, and again, and again. I've read that it is because of poor signal strength or something like that so I had just enough time to put it in airplane mode before it restarted again.
Side note, that theory about it being caused by poor signal seems to make sense because the first time it happened to me I was out of town in a city that gets very bad coverage with Verizon, and now today when it started happening again was at my house where for some reason I get very bad service with the incredible, my old phone worked perfectly fine in my house but the incredible gets terrible service, and so does my brother's Droid. In fact, about two weeks ago I got my first dropped call on Verizon in about three years, and it was in my house.
So anyways, I decided to put it in airplane mode, and just after I put it in airplane mode it restarted again. Then when it booted back up my Helix Launcher 2 home screen went back to the standard Helix Launcher 2 icons, I go into my messages and everything is gone, my contacts are all gone, everything is gone. I go to the app menu and all my apps are still there, but when I start up an app, all the custom settings are default now. I went into the settings and my accounts are all still there. I click on internet and I get a terms of service agreement, it's as if I am booting it up for the first time, but for some reason my apps and accounts are all still there.
I turn airplane mode off thinking it might have something to do with it not being connected to my google account, and I restart it again and everything is still gone. I don't know what to do, has this happened to anyone before? I feel like there should be a way for me to get this stuff back since my apps are still there and my accounts are still synced, but random things are missing like my contacts and messages etc. This is really starting to get annoying, I have insurance and everything, but I really don't want to exchange it for another one because I've read that other people who have had there phones replaced have still had the same rebooting problem, even after going through multiple replacements.

What are the things that an android developer does to achieve it. So I need to know the basic functionality difference of IPad and other E-readers. I heard about Nook which runs an Android operating system. How do I test my app on that nook, i.e. is there any emulator configuration to test the application of nook? (Because I don't have nook now.) Can you post your suggestions to efficiently develop the application for nook e-reader?I need to know the following:What SDK to use for the nook Android platform.Configuration needs of An Emulator on AVD. I've been noticing while looking at other i7500 reviews that my keyboard layout is completely different than all the other i7500, whether in landscape or portrait mode I don't have the caps lock key, instead i have a T9 and the printed orange colour keys is what I hate most
Pls look at this pix, and tell me what can be wrong with this keyboard.
In my settings these are the steps:
Settings>Locale & text >Samsung keyboard, that's all I have, no other Keyboard available, am I missing something or what?

I just wanted to brag a little about my Aria.I have had it for almost two weeks now and I love it! I was a bit worried at first about the battery life.It seemed to deplete quickly. It was barely lasting a whole day. And that was with moderate use. I think a lot of that was due to the lack of signal where I work. It really drains the battery.I noticed the last couple of days the battery life getting better. I checked the battery monitor and it shows that I have been unplugged from the charger for 2 days and still have at least half my batter left. That is with moderate use. I set it so that everything is not always syncing. I think that helps a lot. Anway, I just wanted to share since there seems to be a lot of talk about the poor battery life. So far I've been impressed and happy with my little Aria!

The Donut VoiceDialer is far from ideal for in-car use because it requires users to confirm their selection by tapping on the screen. My idea is to enhance it so that it can be hands-free from start to finish.I was looking at VoiceDialerActivity.java and the most interesting part is the function onRecognitionSuccess(), which starts at line 383.We could modify it so that if there is more than one item, it reads the items out loud and then does another recognition cycle among those items.

Who will take the battery life into consideration when buying a phone? In my opinion, most people who look out for phones do not consider battery life, most would consider stuff like technology, physical looks etc., but not battery life. Even if there are people who consider battery life, those are just the minority. Hence there are lots of controversy regarding the battery life. Most might agree that the battery is just right, however it is no surprise if people complain about battery life running out too quickly. Is technology improving but not batteries? It seems like phones are getting better everyday, but the battery life has like been stagnant.

Im on my 3rd Hero due to poor reception issues, after I recieved my 3rd handset and that too had poor reception (stuck in gprs too often, also complete signal loss sometimes) I complained again to Orange. when I said I either speak directly to Tech Support immediately (no phone back) or I cancel the contract (not fit for purpose). They connected me to Tech Support level 2, guy there said he was going to send a new SIM card out as the one in my phone is either moving (long shot) or is faulty, he also said with the high number of people complaining, it could be a bad batch of SIMs is out there. He asked that while i was awaiting delivery of the SIM to select 2G only in the phone settings to see if the phone stabilised, 2G only test failed, still saw complete signal loss on the odd occassion.I recieved my new SIM this morning and as soon it became active I seen signal strength I had not seen before on the Hero in the exact same locations where I had problems.Im seeing stable HSDPA with 3 bars where before in this exact location I had GPRSA/Signal Loss.

Hey guys, can you do me a favor and go to running services and flick up and down a few times and tell me if you ever get any lag when scrolling all the way up and down? I do every time I go into it and I just don't know if it is normal or not. I see little hickups here and there when I am scrolling but it's always noticeable in the running services screen.( I have LP set to high memory)I am wondering if I have an app slowing things down for me. My battery life hasn't been good either (4-5 hours per charge) and it seems my free memory is low. After a fresh reboot it is 97 + 124 in 34 -- other 87 in 9.I love the phone and would never give it up, but would love it more if it was a bit smoother and more battery life (like lots of others are seeming to get).

First off, let me just say that I recently switched over to the Droid from my Palm Pre on Sprint, which was a huge letdown for me. I'm loving my Droid so far and I just rooted it today with Sholes 1.2 ROM. I'm not that impatient to install a 2.1 ROM on my phone, as I already like 2.0.1 enough to keep it stock.I was curious about installing some of the 2.1 apps on it, which is why I ended up installing Sholes 1.2. However, I've noticed that it seems to take quite a bit of my memory compared to stock 2.0.1. In fact, it seems to run slower in general than the stock 2.0.1. Is there any way to improve this, or should I just wait for the 2.1 OTA?

I just recently graduated college with a B.S. in Computer Science with a focus on software development, particularity in Java. After graduation I got hired as a Java developer for a company in my area (been there for about a little over a month now). I also starting picking up Android development late in my college career since it closely resembles Java syntax and was easy to jump into.My question is, what would be some good Java / Android projects to do and books to read for recent post-graduates in the software development field focusing on Java?
