Android :: Don't Update Screens

Jan 22, 2010

I have Screens installed, which I find to be a pretty decent wallpaper finder. I like using landscapes as wallpaper and it seems to have some good ones. I noticed today that there was an update available, but luckily read some of the latest comments before updating. Apparently, the "update" renders the app non-functional and just tells you to download Mabilo (sp?). I might just uninstall the app on principle, because that's pretty crappy of them. But I thought I'd warn others, in case anyone wanted to keep the app in a functional state.

Does anyone have any ideas on when the update comes if it is going to reset our home screens and settings and all that good stuff. I came from the blackberry world where any major os upgrade meant you needed to back up your phone first before doing the update otherwise all of you stuff was gone when you were done.

I'm after some other really good apps to use while being out in the car and while travelling around the country, any suggestions? One more thing, I'm after a car cradle to use the navigation, but the speaker on the phone is really quiet... is there a satnav with a speaker built in, or can you get cigarette lighter powered bluetooth speakers? I only want to be able to hear what the phone's satnavs saying really.

I really liked how when moving to other screens, the dX displayed the buttons to quickly jump to each screen or the home screen. Is there a way to do something like this on launcherpro, or do I have to hit the home button where it shows all the screens small and I can select one.

Android : Using Multiple Layouts For Different Screens

Dec 3, 2009

I am getting my feet wet developing software for the Android. My test app will have multiple screens (each having their own layout file). The main screen will direct the user to view the other screens based on user input. I kinda see this as layers of cake. Bottom layer being main; then you add and remove layers as the user makes UI inputs. The crazy trouble is how to view a second layer. I have created a second class which has its own onCreate method, which has its on setContentView(R.layout.secondlayer).

This class extends Activity much like my primary class does. I have a click event on a button within the main layout. This button will instantiate the new second layer class which I have done. And that is where my story endsI don't know what to do from this point. This is surely a newbie question If someone has an example that would be extremely helpful teach me to fish and I will be on my way.

Android :: Changing Screens - Switching Between Layouts

Jun 1, 2010

I am trying to create an app for android 1.5 which would be organized around 4-5 'screen's that will be changing in a given order.

So I start ma app with the first screen, which it's background and a button. When I click on the button a new screen appears with a different background and different options which lead to next screens. Sth. that is usually seen in games. The problem is that I need to pass a lot of data between those 'screens' like and array with recorded sound. My idea was to create a separate xml layout file for each screen and change the context in the activity class so ie:

CODE:............

A simple test app for 3 screens works this way but my I don't really like this approach and it seems to be inappropriate.

Is this the correct way of organizing such an app in android or should I take another approach - if I should, please give a more detailed advice on how to do this.

Android :: Protected Blocks On Home Screens

Jun 17, 2010

I have an HTC Incredible and I noticed what appears to be protected blocks on one of the home screens. The home screen has only a couple of programs on it that take up 1 block. When I tried to move the location of one of the programs, I noticed there is a 1x2 vertical strip that is blank that is just to the top right of center that won't allow me to place anything. There is no reason why I shouldn't since there is plenty of room on the screen. Could there possibly be something hidden there? All i see is the background and touching that region does nothing.

Android :: LaunchModes - SingleTask - Switch Between Screens - Intents Only Way

Jan 9, 2010

In a number of questions (like this one) I have been looking into how to "change screens" in my app. I have a "header" on top, with 4 buttons. Each button is meant to replace the "content" (ie change screen):

+--------------------+
menu with buttons
+--------------------+

C O N T E N T

+--------------------+

When I click a Menu button, I run the following code:

CODE:..............

As you can see, the startActivity is executed. Now, if I do not specify "launchMode" for the Activity that means that launchMode = normal. If launchMode == normal that means that the Activity will be re-created each and every time I navigate using the top header buttons, and that means that all data entered in "form elements" are gone (or at least hidden).

So, I found the launchMode "singleTask" that sounded sort of nice. If I add that launchMode to my Activity, it will not be re-created when I navigate with the buttons, thus keeping state. Great! Well, until I read this:

As noted above, there's never more than one instance of a "singleTask" or "singleInstance" activity, so that instance is expected to handle all new intents.

I found out that the sentence mean that there can be only one Activity that has the launchMode set to "singleTask" - if I have more than one it wont work (no compiler error though).

This means that I can only "keep the state" for one Activity, when switching back and forth (navigating) between my screens!

Android :: Supporting Multiple Screens - Document Contradict Itself

Jun 11, 2010

In the Supporting Multiple Screens document in the Android Dev Guide, some example screen configurations are given. One of them states that the small-ldpi designation is given to QVGA (240x320) screens with a physical size of 2.6"-3.0". According to this DPI calculator, a 2.8" QVGA display equates to 143 dpi. However, further down the page the document explicitly states that all screens over 140 dpi are considered "medium" density.

So which is it, ldpi or mdpi? Is this a mistake? Does anyone know what the HTC Tattoo or similar device actually reports? I don't have access to any devices like this.

Also, with the recent publishing of this document, I'm glad to see we finally have an explicit statement of the exact DPI ranges of the three density categories. But why haven't we been given the same for the small, medium, and large screen size categories? I'd like to know the exact ranges for all these.
