I want to develop application that should support all version (latest and old) and it should adjust screen resolution (large,medium). I read document. There I found legacy application if I develop application in 1.6 there I am giving:

<uses-sdk android:minSdkVersion="3" android:targetSdkVersion="4"/>

Is it good way to develop application and is it support 1.5 and 1.5+. Users able to find my application there market.

I want to develop UI of the application which looks similar on all screen sizes. I have gone through the Android developer article regarding this. I am using supports-screen tag but then also the screen is displayed not displayed properly in the larger screens. The screen is displayed properly in HVGA and not in WVGA.

I have developed the application using Android 1.6 and set the minimum SDK version as 4. The application is running properly on HVGA avd but not on WVGA avd. Can I know the reason for it? Is there any solution for this? I want that the user interface of the application should look uniform in all the handsets.

Android :: Compile Android Application On 2.1 To Support All Versions?

I want my Android application to have maximum reach, and hence want to support all versions V1.5 onwards. I find some features lacking in V1.5 that are available in V2.0 or V2.1. Could I compile on V2.1, and then set minSDK for the application to run on 1.5? Plain logic says 2.1 specific features would not work, but let me know your thoughts. Also, what are some other workarounds? What would "you" normally do in such a situation?

I have a few scenarios where I guess I am not alone with. There is no easy solution but this has to be on top of the list I think.

1. Suppose you have an application that is compiled with 1.5 and is working fine even if started on a 1.6 device. But you now want to support other resolutions, so you need to compile with 1.6. Problem: If I recompile and publish the new apk, the 1.5 users want see my applications. Users already downloaded my application can not upgrade. (will there be a "new version" available shown to them in the market?)

2. Lets say your application works fine on 1.5 and 1.6 and you decided to publish your application twice with different package names. "MyApplication 1.5" and "MyApplication 1.6" for example. Problem: The user upgrading from a older version does not know that there is a new version, because you published a new Application. You can write it into the description and tell the user to download the 1.6 version but many users might not read that Settings from the other application are lost. Your downloads are split into two applications, so you might not make it into the top ranks that easy . You might even need to publish 4 applications if you have a light and a paid version.

3. Now 2.0 SDK is available and you want to add multi touch features or any other new stuff for all 2.0 users. Problem: The above problems are getting even worse. There is no way to easily upload multiple apks for the same application. Having to rename the package is also not making this better. Every time svn freaks out and marks everything as new. Sharing code between versions is difficult because of that.

I don't know if its just "3" (provider in Austria), but I still have not received an official update to 1.6. Testing on the real device is not possible with a 1.6 image if you don't want to root your phone and update the rom manually. 2.0 will be on some devices soon, so there is definitely a need to support all 3 versions. There should be a faster update cycle for the users or a slower update of new versions meaning bigger steps. or We get an easier way to support multiple versions. This also means we need a way to know how many actual devices with version 1.5 / 1.6 / 2.0 are already sold and/or upgraded. If i know that 1.5 is only on about 5% of the devices left, then I can just stop supporting that version and upgrade.

I am working on an Android application that I would like to work on a reasonable number of devices. Currently my application works on 1.6 and greater, but uses some API function calls not supported in 1.5. How many devices on the market are restricted to 1.5? Is there a list of the latest firmware versions supported by all the available devices? I'm trying to see if it's worth my time to make my application work for 1.5, or if it won't really affect anyone.

I am a newbie in the Android world, having limited experience in Java from my varsity days decades ago. These days I am a pampered dev in the .NET world. These days I am a proud owner of an HTC Desire and decided to try my hand at Android dev. Now I have struck a bit of a dilemma. I am writing an app which heavily uses XML chunks of data.

I immediately notice there are two ways of doing this - I can laboriously navigate down from the root level, or (somewhat less laboriously) I can use XPath. The trouble is XPath is only supported at a minimum API level of 8 according to the docs. Ideally I would like to support down to 4 (which is 1.6 I think?) What is the best way of doing this? Are there external libraries or packages I can use?

Android :: Developing One Application - Getting Exception?

I am developing one application in which i am getting an exception, and i know this one is the silly or small mistake which i am doing but your help may catch me out and make my day:

In above code, if i make i=0 or i=1 in tryDemo function then it is running successfully , but if i make it other than 0 or 1 then it throws an exception as "Demo - Demo Exception".

I am not sure but i think the exception raises from getApplicationContext().

If I remove the "thread" part and wrote the whole function code in the button click event and replaced the "getApplicationContext()" with v.getContext() then it is running successfully.........but i want to implement it within the THREAD.

I can run my application on 1.5, 1.6 and 2.0 emulator and on a 1.5 device without any problems. But some of my users are reporting force close and strange menu entries (see the attachment) using 1.6 and higher version devices.

Android :: Good Guidelines For Developing Ecommerce Application

I'm making an ecommerce application on Android and, as it is my first serious project, I'm trying to figure out beforehand the best approach to do this.The application talks to a web service (magento api, meaning soap or xml rpc unfortunately) and gets all the content on the phone (product categories, product details, user credentials etc.). I think it should do lazy loading or something like that.

So, I was thinking to keep the user credentials in a custom Object which will be kept in a SharedPreferences so that every Activity cand easily access it. I'll use a couple of ListViews to show the content and AsyncTask to fetch the data needed. Should I keep all the data in memory in objects or should I use some sort of cache or a local database? Also, I'm planning to use a HashMap with SoftReferences to hold the bitmaps I am downloading. But wouldn't this eat a lot of memory?How cand all the activities have access to all these objects (ecommerce basket etc.)? I'm thinking of passing them using Intents but this doesn't seem right to me. Can SharedPreferences be used for a lot of objects and are there any concurrency issues?

Any pointers would be really appreciated. What are some good guidelines? What classes should I look into? Do you know of any resources on the Internet for me to check out?

I want to create a PRO version of my application for Android and was wondering how to structure my repository. For know I have a trunk and feature branches. I'd like to put a pro version in another branch but maybe there is a better way? For example, maybe I should create two branches - one for free version, the other for pro?

Pro version will have additional features and will be ads-free, so e.g. I don't want to include AdMob libraries in the pro version. Do you have any experience or suggestions as to what would be the best way to structure the repository in this case? I think I've found the best solution (for my app) in this thread:

The trick discussed there is about having another application that only serves the purpose of unlocking PRO functionality in the actual application. The unlocking app is paid in the market and the actual app merely checks for the existence of it on the device.

What is the best way to release two versions of an application? E.g. a free version with limited features, and a paid version with the full feature set. #ifdef would be the ideal way to do this, but Java doesn't support it. Could I do something like: try {import com.foo.myapplication.ExtraFeatures; } catch (Exception e) { // ignore it, this must be the free version}? I could manage with this kind of construct, although #ifdef really would be ideal.

I am in middle of learning application development. I have created an application in 2.2 and tested that in my HTC Nexus One device. I looks like fine. My client testing same application setup in his device (Droid2). I don't have that device to test.

He said there are some font sizes are vary and button alignments are missing. When I testing in my device everything looks fine. So, I need to test my application in Simulator which resembles like Droid2 device. Can anyone tell me how to create emulator and setup like Droid2. And also, is there any need to adjust my code or anything in manifest file.

Android :: Size Of Background Images To Support All Android Screens

I'm writing an application and I want one of my activities to have a background. I've read the android docs about supporting multiple resolutions etc. but my designer is asking me what size the wallpapers should be and I do not want a lot of images for low, normal, high dpi in all the screen sizes.

What would be the most space efficient way to get a nice screen filling graphic background on all those screens? Android is great and all, but I do not want to end up with a huge application since I need all sizes of images for everything.

First of all, I just want to say I am a software developer, but I am not an Android developer. However I usually walk around and think on stuff. AndI've been recently thinking all the news concerning how fragmented Android is getting, with different Android versions and tweaks by different phone manufacturers, and then for developers you have different size formats. An example would be that HTC Tattoo might not be able to run everything that another phone might run, due to different screen formats, etc. And now the Android tablets are coming with different Android versions and different screen sizes, all from 5" to 11". Will this make developing Android applications harder? Apple has it safe here since they manufacturer all devices that run the iPhone OS: the pods, phones and now the pad so they can easily control and make sure not to loose any customers by introducing a new device. When Apple introduced iPad they had to make sure that all the old iPhone applications would work on the iPad. They solved that neatly by saying that iPhone applications will simply be stretched out to the double size and it would fit on the iPad. Unfortunately Android does not have the same luxury to do this. As I said, I am not an Android developer. Just a curious software developer For you guys who work actively in the Android community, does Google have a solution for this? Will you be able to run phone applications on the tablets? Right now I've finished an application that I want to distribute on Android Market. It will have a payed version and a free version with some limited features. While developing it, I was doing obviously just the main project of fully featured release. And now after finished I've included a "boolean" DEMO_VERSION=true that restrict those features. My question is if it's possible to generate both apk from the same project? Or should I create new project with the same source but changing the Java package to tell android market that they're two different applications.

I'm nearly ready to publish my OpenGL game. I've been browsing this newsgroup and I've seen quite a few posts regarding crashes, blank screens, etc when running an OpenGL application on the Droid. I have three questions:

1) What are some common pitfalls that occur when trying to support the Droid/Nexus One? So far, I've tested my game on the Android 2.0 emulator (both WVGA & FWVGA) and everything works fine but I'm still paranoid.

2) I've placed my textures (png) in the assets folder. Will these images be pre-scaled automatically? I've read about specifying density independent images for resources but do the same rules apply for images stored in the assets folder? I'm afraid that pre-scaling will cause my textures to become non-power of 2.

3) What additional strategies have developers been taking to ensure their application works on the newer devices when they only have access to G1/G2 hardware?
