Android :: Voice Recognition Activity Called In OnCreate Method / Causes App To Load Slowly

Oct 1, 2010

In my android app I call the voice recognition in my onCreate method of my startup activity. I have made it a preference to start up with the voice control or not. However, the app takes about 5-7 seconds to load when voice recognition is on. When it is off, the app starts almost instantly. Below is sample code, I have added Free_Form, max_results 1, and a custom prompt to mine. Why would calling the normal android speech recognition take sooo long to load in my OnCreate method?

Android :: Why Does App Not Get OnDestroy When Exited But Then Receives An OnCreate When Relaunched

Sep 11, 2009

Why does app not get onDestroy when exited but then receives an onCreate when relaunched?

Here is the trace. Launched app

It received onCreate and the other expected on calls for a launch. Now, leave application with the home button and it receives onSaveInstanceState onPause onStop

And returns to the main Android screen (the one with Google Search at the top) Launch the app again and it receives onCreate onStart onResume

The docs say onCreate is Called when the activity is first created. But here it is never destroyed but created again. There are many objects that never got GCed because the app was not onDestroyed?

Is this a memory leak? What have I missed? Or should I assume that onCreate can be recalled for an already created app.

Android :: Way To Intent From OnCreate Method In Phone?

May 12, 2010

Maybe my question might seem a bit weird, but I have an activity in which, in one case , I have to move to another activity before it finishes loading the screen. My condition is in the onCreate method, which means when I encounter it, i get a "startActivity called from outside an activity context" error and the app just crashes. But then, is there an easy way like a flag for the intent to make it work without having the activity context resolved?

Android :: Application Lifecycle And OnCreate Method In Sdk

Here are it's method:

CODE:..................

My question is, why is onCreate acting like it's in a while loop? I can click on the button whenever, and it makes the sound. I might think it was just a property of listeners, but the Button object wasn't a member variable. I thought that Android would just go through onCreate onse, and proceed onto the next lifecycle method. Also, I know that my current way of seeing if the sound is playing is crap...I'll get to that later.

Android :: Cannot Execute Javascript Function After Loading Html Content With LoadDataWithBaseURL Method

Jul 8, 2009

I have put HTML document into a string variable and load it by using webView.loadDataWithBaseURL(null, htmlString, "text/html", "utf-8", null).

After that, I tried two ways and want to execute javascript function "exec()" by using

1. webView.loadDataWithBaseURL(null, "javascript:exec()", "text/ html", "utf-8", null) -> This will overlap the content of previous "htmlString" and shows "javascript:exec()" on the screen.

2. webView.loadUrl("javascript:exec()") -> There will be "Can't find variable: exec line: ..." in Logcat

I have tried to output "htmlString" to a file located in sdcard, and tried to use webView.loadUrl("file:///sdcard/xxx/a.xhtml") + webView.loadUrl("javascript:exec()").

And...it fails again! how to execute javascript function after loading html content by "loadDataWithBaseURL"?

Android :: Hide Activity On BACK Key Without OnDestroy?

Android :: Activity Being Killed - OnDestroy - On Orientation Change

Apr 5, 2010

I am working on a MVC implementation for Android (to be subsequently hosted on SF and/or GC).

It works like this:

Activity (View) <=> Application (Controller) <=> Data (Model) <=> Persistence (DB/Network etc)

The scenario is:

1. Activity launch (main/launcher)

2. Notifies Application about performing a data transaction

3. Upon receipt of data response, controller devices which Activity to launch (or update existing)

4. Application has overridden the method onConfigurationChange

Problem: When the orientation is changed, the Application is notified about onConfigurationChange but:

a) The "current" activity is Destroyed and recreated -- which is fine to some extent b) The new instance which is created is automatically => onCreate, onPause, onStop, onDestroy.... now that's catastrophic.

In onCreate method of Activity, it binds to a remote service and makes use of AIDL intefaces. Is it required to unbind from the remote service when onDestroy is called on screen orientation change.?

If the activity un-bounded from the remote service in onDestroy and if no other contexts are bound to remote service, is remote service likely to get stopped losing the state that it maintains.?

Android :: Activity Constructor Vs OnCreate

Jul 21, 2010

I understand that Android Activities have specific lifecycles and that onCreate should be overridden and used for initialization, but what exactly happens in the constructor? Are there any cases when you could/should override the Activity constructor as well, or should you never touch it?

I'm assuming that the constructor should never be used because references to Activities aren't cleaned up entirely (thus hampering the garbage collector) and that onDestroy is there for that purpose. Is this correct?

HTC Desire : Best Sync Method With Outlook And Is Gmail Really A Push Service

Sep 4, 2010

I use Microsoft Outlook 2007 as my MAIN email and calendaring software. I will be accessing my mail and calendar via Outlook on my office PC for the vast majority of time.

My main email accounts are currently configured as POP3 but are also configured to leave copies of messages on the server for 30 days, which allows me to check new messages via my ISPs webmail when out of the office.

I have considered changing to IMAP for my main email account but have purposely avoided it up to now as I have a huge number of mail folders and messages my Outlook pst file is currently 7.2GB. A lot of those are for archive reference and I dont need to see them on other devices BUT, as I understand it, IMAP does not let me only select certain folders to mirror and sync between different devices (it must sync all of them) so I feel it would be unwieldy to use IMAP on my account. (If anyone knows of a way to set IMAP to only include specific folders please let me know!).

I do have a Google Mail account already, but rarely use it its just there as a back-up account. Ive NOT as yet imported my Outlook contacts or calendar into my Google account.

Now I know that I can use HTC Sync to sync up my Contacts and Calendar, but what Ive read suggests that the phone works best when you sync it with your Google account. I COULD of course import my Outlook Contacts and Calendar into my Google account, and I COULD also use my Gmail account to check mail from my main POP3 accounts. However, Im unsure about going down that route as Im worried that might confuse things, cause conflicts, or cause double-work for me when I update my contacts or calendar from Outlook or from Google. Are there possible problems with going down that route?

Secondly, Im very intrigued to have read that Gmail is more efficient for the phone as Ive read it works as a push email service. That is, I dont need to check my mail by doing a send/receive from my phone either manually or automatically at set intervals, but that Gmail will just automatically PUSH new emails to my phone as soon as they arrive. Is that correct?

If it is correct it sounds good, but does that mean my phone must be or will be permanently connected to the net? As I dont use my mobile that much Im on a Pay-As You-Go service so need to ensure my phone is ONLY connecting to a data connection when I need it to. Will I be able to work-around this?

I know HTC Sync doesn't transfer Outlook Notes or Tasks. Has anyone found, or can recommend, an app that will do that for me?
