Android :: Opening A Context Menu In OnCreate Of An Activity

Aug 9, 2010

I have a need to capture some user input when an activity opens for the first time. I'm hoping to give the user a list of options to select from, which will be pulled in dynamically. I'll then store the selected value locally for future use. I'm not finding a way to do what I'm after and was wondering if anyone has run into this before and how they solved it.

Android :: How To Control Opening Context Menu?

Jan 8, 2010

I'm writing a program where the user's finger will often linger on the screen for more than the couple of seconds it takes for the context menu to activate. I have a class that controls when this should happen, but I seem to be unable to launch the context menu manually. As a last resort I decided to register the context menu just before running openContextMenu(View) and while this /did/ grant me a context menu, it subsequently disabled the calls to onTouchEvent when the user touches the screen, rendering the program unusable after showing the context menu. What is the correct way of manually opening the context menu? Why does onTouchEvent suddenly stop receiving events?

Android :: Best Practice For Opening Context Menu - Like From Short Button Click?

Oct 1, 2010

I have a button that says "Sort" and when a user normal/short presses the button, I want a menu to appear with the various sort options. Looking around online there doesn't seem to be a straight forward answer to which route is considered best practice. I'm looking to have a menu that looks similar to this: For an example, click the Layers button in the Google Maps app. It opens a list of options on a single short click. It has a title at the top and icons for each option. (The icons aren't super crucial) Should I use a Context Menu? If so, how do I do it without a long press. Should it be a Spinner? If so how do I change the appearance to use a button instead of the normal drop down box.

Android :: Opening Browser Activity / Prevent It From Being In Activity History

Aug 12, 2010

I'm working on an app that launches the browser activity to perform a Twitter OAuth authorization. This process uses a callback url which will re-launch the activity that started the browser activity in the first place. My problem is that the browser pages remain in the history stack and when the user then clicks back from the preferences activity that launched the browser in the first place, they don't go back to the app's main activity, but instead are brought back to the browser. I've tried adding flags to the launching intent to prevent history and reset on clear, but it doesn't seem to work when running on my phone, only on the emulators.

Android :: Activity Constructor Vs OnCreate

Jul 21, 2010

I understand that Android Activities have specific lifecycles and that onCreate should be overridden and used for initialization, but what exactly happens in the constructor? Are there any cases when you could/should override the Activity constructor as well, or should you never touch it?

I'm assuming that the constructor should never be used because references to Activities aren't cleaned up entirely (thus hampering the garbage collector) and that onDestroy is there for that purpose. Is this correct?
