Android :: Check Condition Inside OnCreate() Of Activity And Display An AlertDialog?

Aug 18, 2010

I am new to Android and this is my first question here so please go easy on me.

Is it possible to check some condition inside onCreate() of an Activity and display an AlertDialog?

I am creating an AlertDialog anonymously in Oncreate() and calling show on that instance but the AlertDialog is never displayed.

Android :: Display AlertDialog As System Overlay Window From Service

Sep 28, 2010

I have issue with displaying AlertDialog from Service. I am able to display custom layout window using Toast or using WindowManager(TYPE_SYSTEM_ALERT or TYPE_SYSTEM_OVERLAY). But, I do not want to use custom layout, I prefer to use nice AlertDialog GUI directly.

Scenario:

Running Service. No active Activity present. On some external event, Service sends Notification
When user press Notification, Service is informed via PendingIntent and AlertDialog should be displayed (created with AlertDialog.Builder(this))

Error: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(1063): Caused by: android.view.WindowManager$BadTokenException: Unable to add window -- token null is not for an application. Searching for the answer lead me to impression that I am trying something that is currently not possible (Android 2.2). Or maybe it is.

Android :: Android Market Licensing Check During OnCreate Or OnResume?

Aug 21, 2010

In the included LVL sample app, the license check is triggered during onCreate. This means that when I click "Buy App" to launch the market, then immediately hit the back button to return to the app, the dialog is gone and another check isn't performed, leaving me with a perfectly usable app (at least until the activity is killed and the process starts over again).Would triggering the license check during onResume() be bad form, even though it would fix this issue? Is there a better solution?

Android :: Closing An Activity On OnCreate

Nov 11, 2010

I'm opening an Activity using this:

startActivity(new Intent(Parent.this, Child.class)); And on the child, I have this code on the onCreate function (the if contains more than just true, of course): public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); if (true) { AlertDialog.Builder builder = new AlertDialog.Builder(this); builder.setPositiveButton("OK", null); builder.setTitle("Error"); builder.setMessage("Connection error, please try later.") .show(); finishActivity(0); return;}}

Why is the activity not closing? I get the alert box, but then I have to tap the "back" button to go back.

Android :: Activity Constructor Vs OnCreate

Jul 21, 2010

I understand that Android Activities have specific lifecycles and that onCreate should be overridden and used for initialization, but what exactly happens in the constructor? Are there any cases when you could/should override the Activity constructor as well, or should you never touch it?

I'm assuming that the constructor should never be used because references to Activities aren't cleaned up entirely (thus hampering the garbage collector) and that onDestroy is there for that purpose. Is this correct?

Android :: Database Activity OnCreate()c

Android : How To Launch Droid Activity From An AlertDialog?

Nov 22, 2009

I am trying to create a small pop-up in my Android application to let the user choose from one of many items, ala a ListView. I am hoping to make it show up as a translucent box that overlays on the screen, as opposed to completely occupying it like Activities usually do. One technique for doing this that I've heard is possible is to launch an Activity in an AlertDialog box. This would be perfect - it's the ideal size and has a lot of the mechanical properties I'm looking for, but I'm totally unable to find any more specifics of this technique. Is this possible? And if not, what is the preferred way of accomplishing something like this?

Android :: Check For Internet Connection Inside An Anonymous Class?

Dec 30, 2009

I was trying to make an anonymous class to upload a file to a server.

I wanted to make that easily reusable much like some kind of component.

Everything works fine but as a final touch i wanted to add a function to check if internet connection is available.

Problem is, the call to the connectivity manager needs the Context :

ConnectivityManager connec = (ConnectivityManager) getSystemService (Context.CONNECTIVITY_SERVICE);

Since i'm in an anonymous class and I've read that it's not a good idea to pass the whole context to classes, I wondered about two things :

1 - Is there another way to check internet connection without the Context ? 2 - Why in Android internals make it necessary to have the context just to check if the device is connected to internet ?

Android :: Parent And Child Activity OnCreate?

Jul 2, 2010

I have a parent activity, and a child activity that extends the parent activity. When the parent starts the child activity,

Which onCreate gets executed first? The child's or parent's?

There is a particular variable I am setting in the Child activity's onCreate method, and right now, it looks like it takes a while to get to the Child activity's onCreate, and so the methods in the Parent are reporting an empty variable. Whereas when I make the Parent sleep for a while, it reports the correct variable.

CODE:............

So, basically, even after the Parent starts the Child, it still returns "Parent Value", but when I have the thread sleep, it return "Child Value".
