Android :: How To Trigger Intent To Execute Specific Method From One Activity?
Jun 13, 2010
I've been searching a way to implement an intent so when a user clicks on a notification, an specific method from an activity is executed (or an specific behavior happens). Right now I'm thinking about using broadcast but I don't know if this is the best way to implement this functionality. How would you implement it?

I want to expose a portion of my app with an intent that will only display a simple dialog box for system setting. The only way I currently know how to do this is to have an activity that accepts an intent. In the activity I don't use setContentView. I only create and show the dialog. The activity is finished after you press OK from the dialog.
This is kind of okay, but the activity shows as a black backdrop under the dialog, until you press OK which brings you back to the last application. I'd like to just be able to show the dialog on top of the calling Activity. Any idea on how this can be done? CAN it be done?

I have put HTML document into a string variable and load it by using webView.loadDataWithBaseURL(null, htmlString, "text/html", "utf-8", null).
After that, I tried two ways and want to execute javascript function "exec()" by using
1. webView.loadDataWithBaseURL(null, "javascript:exec()", "text/ html", "utf-8", null) -> This will overlap the content of previous "htmlString" and shows "javascript:exec()" on the screen.
2. webView.loadUrl("javascript:exec()") -> There will be "Can't find variable: exec line: ..." in Logcat
I have tried to output "htmlString" to a file located in sdcard, and tried to use webView.loadUrl("file:///sdcard/xxx/a.xhtml") + webView.loadUrl("javascript:exec()").
And...it fails again! how to execute javascript function after loading html content by "loadDataWithBaseURL"?

I have a repeating alarm setting, I have the activity being launched, the piece I'm missing is having this triggered after x minutes of inactivity.
I'm considering keying off of SCREEN_OFF in a service and then setting an alarm and canceling it on SCREEN_ON, does anyone have an intent or other suggestion for this. I've considering polling for tasks, all kinds of pieces but I'm stuck.
Requirement:
- App launches, alarm is set to relaunch app after 5 minutes, user exits/app exits after one minute
- alarm triggers, detects phone is in use, resets alarm to trigger in fives minutes
- if phone is idle relaunches app for one minute

I'm testing an app on a Droid. It's a kind of card matching game. I'd like to keep the cards physically located in the same place on the screen regardless of a screen rotation. For example, I can put my thumb on a card, rotate the phone any way I please and the card stays fixed under my thumb. However, the orientation of the content of the card will change to match the current phone rotation. I handle this by transforming the card grid in onCreate. This works fine for 90 degree rotations, but if I do a fast 180 degree flip from one landscape mode to another the screen simply flips and the Activity is NOT destroyed and recreated.
This seems contrary to the documentation:
http://developer.android.com/reference/android/R.attr.html#configChanges
"public static final int configChanges Since: API Level 1
Specify one or more configuration changes that the activity will handle itself. If not specified, the activity will be restarted if any of these configuration changes happen in the system. Otherwise, the activity will remain running and its Activity.onConfigurationChanged method called with the new configuration. "
I am NOT specifying any configChanges in my AndroidManifest.xml file, so it seems that the activity SHOULD be destroyed and recreated. Why isn't it? Is there some way I specify that it should be destroy/ recreated?

I know that I can get some informations from the Sim card by using the TelephonyManager class, but I couldn't find any specific method to get its country and area code, and also if the user is on roaming the area code would probably change to the location he currently is.

I want to set up a BroadcastReceiver to handle PACKAGE_REPLACED, but I only want to be notified when my package is replaced. It works fine if I specify a data tag with scheme="package" but then I get notified when any application is reinstalled or upgraded. I can't figure out how I'm supposed to specify the package name which is in the scheme specific part -- that is, when my BroadcastReceiver gets the intent in onRecieve(), if I do intent.getData().getSchemeSpecificPart(), that's the package name, but is there any way I can filter for only that in my intent-filter?

Maybe my question might seem a bit weird, but I have an activity in which, in one case , I have to move to another activity before it finishes loading the screen. My condition is in the onCreate method, which means when I encounter it, i get a "startActivity called from outside an activity context" error and the app just crashes. But then, is there an easy way like a flag for the intent to make it work without having the activity context resolved?

LG Dare is a full touch screen phone. One of the input methods actually pulled up a regular dial pad, with letters, and it simulated old t9 predictive text. I have been very proficient with that for years and rather it to a full touch screen key board. Has anybody come across a feature or third party application that would allow me to do that?

My app works with pictures. It can take multiple pictures as an input, process them, and send them again to another app.
As a consequence, my main Activity has declared an intent filter on ACTION_SEND_MULTIPLE for image/* mimetypes and can result in issuing a new Intent with the same action and data type using Activity.startActivity(Intent).
Is there a way to exclude my own activity from the list of apps that is displayed to the user after the startActivity() call ?

I figured out the method to shifting through the contacts contract but now get a weird error on the intent. I think I have the right manifest.
@Override // the class that is called every time the user clicks something
protected void onListItemClick(ListView l, View v, int position, long id) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
super.onListItemClick(l, v, position, id);
// the reflections of a applications intent to perform some activity
// in this case a call action to dial the phone
Intent i = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_CALL);
// cursor of the selection Cursor c = (Cursor) mAdapter.getItem(position);
// get some info from the cursor
String contactId = c.getString(c.getColumnIndex(Contacts._ID));
String IsPhone = c.getString(c.getColumnIndex(Contacts.HAS_PHONE_NUMBER));
//if the selection has phone numbers if (Integer.parseInt(IsPhone)> 0) {
Cursor phones = getContentResolver().query(Phone.CONTENT_URI, null, Phone.CONTACT_ID + "=" + contactId, null, null);
while (phones.moveToNext()) { String strPhoneNumber = phones.getString(phones.getColumnIndex(Phone.NUMBER)); System.out.println(strPhoneNumber);
i.setData(Phone.CONTENT_URI);
} } //i.setData(strPhoneNumber);
// Causes the dialer to appear on the screen and initiate the phone call //startActivity(i);

I've seen a few other threads on this subject, but none that addresses my need which is to not only find the app in the market via the market uri, but display it as if the user had navigated to it. The closest anyone has gotten to this answer is to show how to bring up the Android Market app and browse for the app you want which shows the single result in a list that the user must still select to get to the screen I want to display.
Here's my existing code that does exactly that:
private static final String MY_MARKET_APP = "com.some.silly.name";
Intent marketLaunch = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW);
marketLaunch.setData(Uri.parse("market://search?q=pname:" + MY_MARKET_APP));
startActivity(marketLaunch);
I don't want to have to force the user to select this single item from the list - just bypass that and bring up the next screen.

I'm having difficulties handling multiple instances of my root (main) activity for my application. My app in question has an intent filter in place to launch my application when opening an email attatchment from the "Email" app. My problem is if I launch my application first through the the android applications screen and then launch my application via opening the Email attachment it creates two instances of my root activity. steps: Launch root activity A, press home Open email attachment, intent filter triggers launches root activity A Is it possible when opening the Email attachment that when the OS tries to launch my application it detects there is already an instance of it running and use that or remove/clear that instance?

Applications can have any number of launchable activities. I know how to get the list of these activities via PackageManager.
Is there a way to determine which activities can be launched via startActivity?
For example, the Documents To Go app has different activities that will start Word, Excel, Powerpoint, PDF, etc... I am able to launch all o these just fine.
However, it also contains some activities that I am not able to launch with startActivity... If I attempt to do this I get a SecurityException.
I want to be able to determine which activities I can safely launch and which I cannot so I only present the user with a list of activities that I can safely launch from within my application...

I want to specify in code to move to specific activity after pressing back button on android keypad how I can accomplish this. Now I ot the solution to my prob onBackPressed() works after 1.6 version for previous versions we need use:
public boolean onKeyDown(int keyCode, KeyEvent event) method
My code for this solved prob is
@Override public boolean onKeyDown(int keyCode, KeyEvent event) {
if (android.os.Build.VERSION.SDK_INT < android.os.Build.VERSION_CODES.CUR_DEVELOPMENT && keyCode == KeyEvent.KEYCODE_BACK && event.getRepeatCount() == 0) {
// Take care of calling this method on earlier versions of
// the platform where it doesn't exist. onBackPressed(); }
return super.onKeyDown(keyCode, event);
} //@Override public void onBackPressed() {
// This will be called either automatically for you on 2.0
// or later, or by the code above on earlier versions of the
// platform.
Intent i=new Intent(AgesWebViewIndex.this,TabCls.class);
i.putExtra("age", "agepage");
startActivity(i);
return;

I've searched for a few hours for a solution to this, so hopefully this isn't a repost I'm setting a shortcut on the Home screen which raises an Intent to my application - the problem is that I don't want to show my app, just run a little code and display a Toast notification. This must be possible - I just can't work out how.. Once I'm handling the shortcut Intent in onCreate() the UI has initialised and I get a little screen flicker if I then run my code and finish().

I have a service that is downloading a file. When the download is done, I would like to update my "Downloaded files" list in my Activity, but only if the Activity is running. I do not want the Activity to start if it's not already running. I was hoping I could do this by making a new Intent with some special flag. Anyone have any idea how I can achieve this? A tiny code example maybe?
