Sprint HTC Hero :: Play Video Taken By Phone / Couldn't Find Software To Convert To Other Formats
Jun 3, 2010
I did not see any thread related to this. I have taken a few videos using the camcorder in HTC Hero. But I am not able to play it in my phone or couldn't find any software to convert to other formats.

I take videos on the HTC Hero, connect the phone to PC, then drag videos from phone to desktop. They come out as .3gp files. When I try to play them back, each program either crashes (Quicktime, VLC), or tells me that it cannot playback this type of codec (Windows Media Player). The videos playback fine on the phone, just not when I bring them over to my PC.I am running Android 2.1 and Vista. Any help is appreciated.

I looked into this forum and in Google but with no success so far. Yesterday I bought HTC Desire and can not understand how to play the supported video formats- mp4, wmv and 3gp on the device. I am not trying to stream these files from Internet- I have them already downloaded on my PC. I want to copy them onto my Desire and somehow play them. I have several questions: 1. Do I need to re size the video files- do they require specific resolution in order to be played? 2. Do I need to copy these videos to a specific folder on the device? Or I can just create new folder through my PC and dump them there. 3. How the hell can I actually play the movies once they get onto the device? I can not see an application which launches movies. There is a music player but not a movie player. Do I need to download a widget or an application which runs movies? If yes- please recommend a good one.

I tried out Handbrake and followed the directions from the forum. I am having trouble getting any movie to convert. I've tried dvd's, and even a movie from Amazon. Any tips for a nob? A simpler converter perhaps?

I'm just trying to find out what video formats are supported on the Hero? I've tried mkv and avi, but no go on either. This is particularly frustrating since all my movies / video files are in mkv and avi. Also, if these formats can be supported through the use of an application.

I am a little disappointed though that my HTC Hero can't play avi movies. Will this be possible for Hero owners in the near future? With a ROM update or anything else?

I'm trying to play videos from a site, its a MP4 and when I click on it loads but then I get an a message of "Cannot play video, Sorry, this video cannot be played." The video also gives me the option to play it as a WMV, when I download the WMV version it wont play. All it does is play the audio, the actual video won't play. Am I doing something wrong or do I need to download an app, if so what app?

Anyone know of any decent software to convert music formats? Specifically Apple formats to mp3? I am hoping to find something that is free, but would probably be willing to pay a few bucks for something that is outstanding.

Anyone know of a media player that will play .flv files without having to convert to .mp4 or .3gp ?
Seems strange that youtube streams fine, but you can't play the downloaded files in the default media player.

I asked a while back about the correct video resolution for the Hero, but now I want to know; I'm converting a few of my movies, and they're in that super super thing widescreen format, and when I convert them to 480x320, they're stretched at the top. Does anyone know what to convert them to so they're not? I'm really bad at resolutions

Is anyone having issues with HTC Sync and the phone not being able to find it on the computer? I've used it before, but today it doesn't want to find it on my computer. I uninstalled sync from the computer, and reinstalled it, even tried a hard reset on my phone, still no go.
Any ideas? Or am I just an idiot and doing something wrong?

I know that I can get some informations from the Sim card by using the TelephonyManager class, but I couldn't find any specific method to get its country and area code, and also if the user is on roaming the area code would probably change to the location he currently is.
