Samsung Captivate :: Difference Between Automatic Brightness Adjustment And Power Saving Mode
Aug 3, 2010
What is the difference between "automatic brightness adjustment" and "power saving mode" which has the description "save power by adjusting image and adjusting LCD brightness"? Which one should I have on to conserve battery? It sounds like the do the same thing.

Just curious what brightness setting everyone is using? I'm talking normal, run-of-the-mill settings not what you crank it to when you're outside, and not what you turn it down to for playing games in the dark. I want your normal setting. Anyone have an idea of how much power usage is impacted? (Like, does 100% Brightness use 50% more power than 10%, or does it use 400% more power?)

Is it possible to reboot an Android smartphone as a non-smartphone(Like a Nokia 1100) ? Just enable only services to make phone calls and everything else remain disabled(Slow down the CPU to the lowest clock speeds, lower bit depth, turn off all on-board electronics other than those necessary etc). Motivation is to save power. In my phone most of the power is consumed by Android OS (and not screen). I was wondering if I had a mode like that I could keep the phone alive in case I can't charge the phone immediately, by switching into this power saving mode.

I'm currently building a custom ROM based on android 4.1.2 and I am having two questions:
1. In Settings -> Display -> Brightness there is no checkbox for automatic screen brightness. Can this feature be added (the check box to turn on/off the automatic brightness)?
2. When I activate the automatic screen brightness (using notification bar toggle) and the battery drains under 15% the brightness is setted to maximum and the Brightness page in settings can't be used, is there a way to fix this?

This screen is unnecessarily bright in total darkness- is there a better screen brightness app that can bring the backlight down more than the settings allow?

I got my Droid my automatic brightness has worked fine. It's been extremely fast, reliable and the power manager widget works great as well. As of yesterday, however, now my brightness seems to stay the same all the time. Whenever I attempt to adjust my brightness in settings, it immediately reverts back to automatic brightness and keeps itself at the same level. Also, the power manager button no longer works either. Instead of cycling through the three different settings it turns my brightness all the way up, and when I press my power button the screen takes a few extra seconds to dim before shutting off.

My question mainly is, is there a way to make the phone's calendar and contacts synchronize with outlook automatically? For example, everytime I connect the phone it does it automatically. My previous phone was a Samsung i8910 with symbian OS and everytime I have my laptop on, the phone synchronizes everything with outlook over bluetooth. I was really hoping for a way to get this feature somehow on my Captivate.

I set the phone to not set brightness automatically and I put the brightness to the minimum. Every time I bring down the notification bar, the brightness automatically raises nonetheless and it's starting to really p.m.o.

Curious if any of the captivate owners are experiencing this. If you set your brightness to max, and turn off power saving mode. Have you noticed, when your battery starts to get really low, the phone ignores your max brightness setting, and reverts to a lower brightness?

i don't record video very often, so i just noticed this problem after having my droid for almost a month. does anyone else experience this? it's a little difficult to explain, but it seems like the automatic brightness of the video recorder is not working correctly. in low light scenarios, instead of the video getting brighter so you can see more, it actually gets DIMMER. i can tell this because i set up a scenario where half the room is regular light and half is low light.
things look fine in the regular light. additionally, things look fine when i have both sides of the room in the picture, and i can tell the droid adjusts a little because the the picture will get brighter, causing the regular light side to be very bright but the low light side to be visible (that's the expected behavior). then, when i pan to the low light side, i see the camera make a brightness adjustment again, but it gets dimmer rather than brighter, making it almost impossible to see anything. the screen basically turns black. i'm sure this is not how it's supposed to work, but what i'm wondering is whether i have a faulty unit and should exchange or whether everyone has this issue. did anyone understand this post?

Is there any difference between locking the screen (screen being off) and "sleep mode"? If there is, is there a way to force not to go into sleep mode, but have the screen off?

If you swipe your finger on the notification bar (with the panel still up), you can change your brightness, anywhere that bar is present! Useful when auto brightness isnt on and you need a quick brightness change. I'm not sure if this is a touchwiz feature or an android feature.

I was able to successfully configure the stock email app on my android phone (Samsung Captivate). However when I went to "Email check frequency" in the settings to enable push, it did not allow me to do so. According to Android, there is an option in this setting called "Automatic (push)" other than polling options. In my case I just had polling options like "5 mts", "10 mts", "Never", and so on. But I don't have the "automatic push" option!
I checked in with my system admin. He said that they have enabled push from their end. In fact, we are on the corporate email of Google apps. So it is like a gmail except that it has my corporate email address. So this should have been a piece of cake, no?

I have a friend that sent me this message today, which sounds like a great idea:
I've been messing with setcpu and trying out some underclocking profiles. Underclocking while the screen is off as well as reducing the CPU power has gotten me 75% battery left after 8 hours. This is with constant emails but no wireless, bluetooth, or gps. This is better than I was getting under windows mobile.

Noticed since I work in a rather quiet environment. During office hours I need to keep it on vibrate mode. When the phone vibrates during a call, it causes a severe rattling noise when the phone is in my hands or if the bottom is not resting against a hard object. Removing the battery compartment cover and repeat, and the rattle is non existent. With the battery cover on, the rattle can be diminished by pressing firmly on the top section of the cover.

my galaxy s2,it is rooted, and i have another problem : the phone restarts by itself and gets stucked in the boot loop, i never flashed a new rom ,it is running the stock rom,Someday i needed to factory reset the phone so i rebooted into recovery mode (power + home button +vol up) ,. I booted into recovery mode but the power button does NOT react as 'select' button although it works just fine for power on and off. I select a function and press [power] an the first line becomes the selected. pushing it again just flashed the screen. But pressing it long turns the phone off,and even after the factory reset from phone directly(with out going to recovery mode)
