Samsung Captivate :: Better Idea For Saving / Extending Battery Life
Aug 18, 2010
I have a friend that sent me this message today, which sounds like a great idea:
I've been messing with setcpu and trying out some underclocking profiles. Underclocking while the screen is off as well as reducing the CPU power has gotten me 75% battery left after 8 hours. This is with constant emails but no wireless, bluetooth, or gps. This is better than I was getting under windows mobile.

Found a good way to save on battery life. Use airplane mode app to switch off all communications on your Wildfire at night. I had to download an app called StudioKUMA Airplane Scheduler. I have set mine to 11:00pm off and back on at 06:00am so should save a load on battery power.

I just rooted tonight and installed SetCPU. I want to use it for the battery saving capabilites. I created a profile for when the screen is off and activated it, do I also need to check "set on boot" on the SetCPU main page?

I have been having some battery issues on my Captivate and can only seem to get through 12 or so hours with minimal use and it is quite bothersome. The main reason I bought the phone was because of its battery life and so far, I am disappointed. For instance, I charged my phone all night, woke up and made a less than one minute phone call, looked at my status and I was at 96%. As the day went on with minimal use, it seems to drain without me even touching it. As of now (13 hours later), my battery icon is blue and showing halfway full, but the battery status says 36% which does not add up to me. I also don't have a live wallpaper and have Advanced Task Manager that kills all apps as well as GPS and Wifi turned off. Any tips? Should I take it back and get a new one or see if I can get a new battery?

My Captivate has been plugged in for the past 2+ hours and I barely have 40% battery. Also, my charging cord doesn't stay plugged in. If I pick it up at all while it is charging, the cord falls out. I love this phone, but this may be a deal breaker. What are the chances these issues are just with the phone? Should I go to AT&T and get a new one?

I seem to be having what I consider unacceptible battery life and I wanted to collect some thoughts on how to improve it, or if I should seek remedy with AT&T or something. At this point, the phone is of limited use to me because it dies part way through the day, which is unacceptable. Normal routine. Phone charges completely overnight. I unplug my phone sometime in the 7am hour. I usually get my first battery warning around 3pm. Phone usually shuts itself off around 5-7pm (hence, a serious problem). Since the phone is dying, it is "cycling" the battery every time I charge it. My day is what I would consider moderate usage. For comparison, my Samsung Jack last a day and a half under the same conditions. My settings for display and other things are essentially stock.
I pulled the battery stats the last time the phone died just as it was shutting itself off.
Total time: 11h 49m
Display: 39% 1h 22m
Cell idle: 12% 10h 19m
Cell Standby: 25% 11h 41m, No signal 6%
Android system: 6% CPU background 22m, CPU Foreground 9s
Palringo: 6% Background 22m, foreground 3s
Android OS: 4% 12m
Doplhin HD Browser: 2% 6m 29s, 3m 58s
Android Core apps 2%
Good 2% 4m 50s, 31s

I have done everything that I can think of in order to increase my battery life. I even took the old jeep to the shop to get the AC port fixed so I can charge in my car. I don't know if I have a genuine problem here or if I am just being picky. I know I have been using my phone more the past 3 days because it is a new toy and I can't keep my hands off of it, but I have noticed that the battery does not last more than 8 hour of normal use before it is completely depleted. I rooted it, removed the bloat, turned of GPS and Wireless assist, don't use WIFI, installed a task manager, and turned screen brightness to the minimum.
With all that being said the phone still does not last near what I think it should be. I have had it for 3 days now, so I am guessing what I am hearing from other people is that my battery should be broken in by now. I don't know what else to try. I noticed that when I check the battery use, the display is usually 70+ percent. Is there some day to decrease the brightness beyond the stock settings or something to increase life?Does it sound like I may need to do a battery swap. I know I have been playing with the phone more, but I feel like I haven't been using it so much that it should die that quickly.

I don't have the Hero in front of me to experiment as I've given it to the missus.
Basically she lives in a low reception area right on the edge of where 3G signal drops out and her battery is lasting hours instead of days (when I tested it in a good reception area). I figure the battery is getting eaten up having to keep reconnecting to the mobile network.
She uses the Gmail app alot (not the other Mail app where you can specify when to check for mail). She would also no doubt have Facebook, Twitter, Gtalk, Googlemaps' Latitude, MSN Talk all active. I dunno if there's anything else that needs data in the background :P
Anyway, I'm wondering if there is a way to control all of these apps so that they either don't need data as often or super easy ways to turn things off/on. I guess what I mean is that if you have to go and check each of these things manually.

My battery life has been pretty poor to this point, so I have been going from full charge to completely empty. I was doing that today when my phone shut off because it was out of battery. I then went and plugged it in for about four minutes, then realized I needed something so I unplugged and turned it back on, and now am showing 43% battery! I figured it was a glitch with the stock battery display, so downloaded the BatteryLife widget, which confirms I have 43%. Does this mean I need to complain to AT&T to get a new battery, or a new phone? Update: I rebooted the phone again and was at critically low battery life. I reseated the battery and rebooted again, and now I'm at 5%.

Ive been stalking the forums for a few weeks, reading up on all the issues and things associated with this phone and i can say ive experienced most of them (excluding rooting issues, i havent rooted).
*(of course) gps issues
*phone spontaneously shuts off and battery has to be removed before it will turn back on
*randomly awakes itself from sleep just to display the lock screen
*painfully short battery life
*no signal for a long time, have to restart phone several times before it returns.
These have all plagued me horribly the past month or so. then today it decided it wanted to....::gasp:: behave?
My battery still had half its life left when i got home tonight and its usually dead or yelping for a charge by that time (activity/usage the same today too). pages loaded quickly today and i had a signal all day.

I found that really saved my battery life was either during off 3G or installing Juicedefender, which helped, but it was still draining a ton.
What I did was I checked when facebook updated my contacts to once a day instead of the default. Which I believe the default setting was Every hour, because honestly I don't need it to check every hour for a profile picture change or a few things that I normally check on my own with the facebook app.
The way you do that is
Menu->Settings->Accounts and Sync->Facebook for HTC Sense->Account Settings->Change it to Once a day.
Also I recently found out that you can use your gmail account to have it check a work e-mail or another e-mail, by using pop e-mail, so I didn't have to leave my phone set to check my work e-mail every 15 minutes and drain battery life that way, and that works really well too so your just using your gmail account for e-mail, plus your gmail account pushes to your phone every time a new e-mail comes, which it can do for a work e-mail or your gmail e-mail.
The way you set that up is,
Login to your gmail->Settings->Accounts and Imports->Under Check mail using POP3->Click add POP3 account->Then start adding your work e-mail in there
You can also select Send mail as and add your work e-mail in there, so you can just use your gmail account to send e-mail, I would prefer to use IMAP, but since I am usually in front of a computer, cleaning up my e-mail isn't too much of a job to do.
But this is a great way to use less data and to save a TON on your battery, by the time I was done with work today, I was at 80% battery, when I am normally around 40% to 50%, and after a few short phone calls and showing my mom about 100+ phones from the 3D photo gallery I am still at around 60% on my battery.

I would like to ask since the one thing I am not to fond of about this phone is a lack of a notification LED if someone could make an app that would light up the bottom rows of soft keys to replace the LED missing?
I was sitting here thinking of an idea that would give some sort of indication that there was some sort of notification that needed my attention. Is this even possible? I know the screen and those buttons are lit by different means.
I think it's a good idea as that is my only beef with this phone.

I've come up with an idea for a battery status indicator application. On my old Windows Mobile phone I had an application(abcPowerMeter) which could show the current power consumption of the phone. Like this: If we can get this on the Galaxy, then it can be coupled with the existing battery status information to give a pretty good estimate of how long the battery is going to last under current load.Instead of showing a notoriously unreliable and counterintuitive green bar the phone would show something like this in the tray.

Wondering if there is an app that manages charge points, stopping a battery from charging at 50% even while plugged in. Lifespan more than doubles if device battery is kept at 40%. I have a xoom FE.
Also, is it just me, or is the search feature not working? Trying it and it alternates between simply closing as soon as I touch the keyboard, and/or kicking the cursor up to the Google bar.

Well after trying evereything under the sun to get better battery life out of this vibrant, including atk, turning 3G off, installing battery apps, rooting, setcpu, lag fixes, now custom roms today. I finally know why the battery blows. I simply can't stop messing with this thing that is why! It's always in my hand like a nice comfort toy. Reminds of when the iPhone came out and I was hacking that thing to pieces updating unlocking jail breaking selling buying.

However, this simply has not been my experience at all, I get a couple of days out of my SGS whereas some others report only getting a day.
I just thought it would be interesting for us to post in here how much battery life we are getting for the amount of use we put the phone to.
There must be some sort of pattern.
My usage:
anywhere between 10 - 30 texts per day.
Several emails - sending and recieving.
a few phonecalls.
30 Minutes of gaming.
Twitter.
Live wallpaper running.
BBC News widget running and Weatherbug widget running.
I also listen to some music but this varies day by day.
3G and HSPDA are left on constantly as is my wireless.
GPS is turned off.
Thats my usage and i get at least a day and a half. Would be interesting to compare...

I know this phone isn't know for blinding speed (at least running it stock), but lately it's having trouble keeping up with text input from the keyboard. Is this normal? I am using taskiller to kill any not needed background apps and normally have over 120mb left in RAM. Any tips on what I can do to fix this? I'm trying to hold off rooting until I get the t-mobile update. Also, does the phone normally give inaccurate battery readings to the widgets? Because I am literally looking at the phone and watching the percentage go up... up 6 percent in the last hour. lol anyone else getting this?

This is a great thread to read on tips for saving power http://androidforums.com/samsung-vibrant/138944-how-save-power.html But this is something that people over look, its mentioned in a few places but I think it needs to be promoted more. I'm talking about, well I guess the word for it is conditioning the battery. Basically you drain the battery down till its dead(though in my case I went down to only 5%), turn the phone off and charge back up to full. One thing I noticed right away was how long it took for the phone to recharge. I have not hard data, but my experience up to that point was charging before didn't take that long. But now that I've done this, battery life is great. I've been listening to music for a couple of hours, some light browsing, viewed a youtube video, took a few pictures, and I have background sync on and I have both twitter and facebook installed with notifications set to their shortest time span(15min and 30min respectively). Currently at 8hrs since unplugged and at 61%. Not bad I'd say. I also have rooted my phone and installed the lag fix. I'm not running BH_MAN's cut down rom, I am still running stock.

Wow, I'm not sure what it is but my battery life has been horrible for the past week or so. Very minimal usage has me at 20% in 5 hours. This is unacceptable. The most I do is browse the web or play the occasional game for a few minutes. Recently I installed launcher pro, is this program known to worsen battery life? I don't even have that many programs on this phone. I see peoples screen shots with 7 pages full of widgets, I have 3 pages and only two are "full" of widgets.
I'm rooted, on stock rom, bloatware removed, and overclocked @ 1.2Ghz. I'm aware that overclocking is harder on the cpu and can worsen battery life, but my phone isn't always running at full speed. I have all my profiles set on conservative. When the screen is off I have it set to clock at 600Mhz max, 100 minimum. Does anyone know what might be causing the problem?
I heard that some custom roms improve battery life. What else can I do to improve battery life? If launchers can cause bad battery I'll just use touchwiz, doesn't bother me. I'd rather have good battery life over good looking screens. Also, my screen is on the lowest brightness setting for most of the day. Today for example, I had my phone fully charged. Took it off the charger and texted my girlfriend for a bit. Browsed maybe 2 sites on the web. I took a 2 hour nap. Woke up and played Nova for 20 minutes. I check my charge and my.phone was at 30%! Unacceptable. It was off the charger for less than 5 hours!
