Samsung Captivate :: What's Odin And How To Use?
Aug 3, 2010what Odin is, and how I use it for the Captivate? I have a vague idea, but I'm not quite clear on a few things, and don't know where to get it, and how to use it. If I understand correctly, it flashes my phone to factory fresh using ROMs. If I'm right, then I can use it to restore my phone(ATT apps and all) if I need to send it in for repair at AT&T. Am I right?

Oct 31, 2010I did it last night, seemed to work fine, but I noticed something today. Under settings, applications, USB settings, there is an option for PC Internet that wasnt there originally. When I try to go to software update, it says Communication Failed. Unable to connect to ATT servers.
Coincidence that this started now, or is there something wrong? I reset the phone twice, and reloaded Odin twice. Everything else seems to work fine.

1. keep syncing phone book over 3g (even if on wifi) sometimes 3 or 4 time in a 5 min span and even if background sync is off
2. random power downs
3. no market update (is this something I need to do manually?)
4. Sometimes 3g and wifi on at the same time.

Aug 3, 2010I've had this phone since day one. I was counting down the days until I could get it. I'd gone from an iPhone 3G, to the Aria, to the Captivate. I was loving the Aria, so I was really excited to get a faster, more full-featured phone. And don't get me wrong, 65% of the time it is a great phone, as long as I'm not trying to listen to music (which is what I do 90% of the time on my phones). I love Swype, I love the screen, yada, yada, yada. All the stuff folks love about this phone, I love. But now I'm at a crossroads. I'm an audio professional. Music playback is seriously important to me. Shoddy playback just can't happen. I mean, this is the top of the top of the line when it comes to phones, right? It should do something as simple as playback music flawlessly, right. It should perform basic tasks without freezing, hesitating or any of that, right? My Aria was faster and more responsive than this phone (by far). And a little easier to use overall.
So now I find myself wanting to keep the phone, but if I do something's gotta change. I can't wait for months. I need basic music functionality now. So my choices are: 1. Root (which could damage the phone and put me in a more difficult situation). And I'm not a developer or anything. I'm a guy with a conversational knowledge of computers but way too busy a life to spend as much time as I have with this phone, although I've enjoyed the reading forums and tinkering. 2. Reset. Some say a factory reset has cured all their ills, but I'm skeptical. Do I want to risk having to take the time to re-input all my data on the off chance that it will magically solve the problem? Call me crazy, but I think the phone was at factory reset level when I bought it, and these problems have been around since day one.3. Return. Well, this is almost the same as factory reset, but with a trip to the store, grief from the folks there and the inputting all info again. And nothing guarantees that the new phone is any more or less glitchy than the current one?
Now, let me say that I don't want an iPhone 4. That's the whole reason I went to Android. I don't like the I4. I've been a Mac guy since 1990, I have an iPad, and iTouch, a MacBook, an iMac, a Shuffle, an iPhone 3G. I just don't like where Apple has gone, for the first time in my life.So, I'm asking you all: what the $&^ should I do? I'm at the breaking point with a phone I love.

Each time I do a factory reset, it still has the tether app installed and other things as well.How do I take it back to the original, or at least somewhat updated original firmware?Please provide a specific link. I went to the samsung firmwares website and had no idea how to navigate that stupid thing.

I installed a different browser - dolphin - then assigned it to my browser shortcut. I didn't really care for it so I uninstalled it. May 25, 2010i think my gt-i7500 is bricked. i downloaded the 1.6 firmware(.tar) along with ODIN.. set up the downloading mode and used ODIN to flash it to 1.6. ODIN showed PASS in the window but the phone refuses to boot up. It remains frozen with the SAMSUNG sign. Recovery mode is not working either.

6. Hold and Press Volume Down, OK, Power (the red end button)

Oct 18, 2009So i downloaded Odin and "I7500XXII5-PDA-CL64494-REV5(VIA).tar" with the intention of overwting my providers startup ads and bloatware and saw in the instructions that I should delete the cache.img file in I7500XXII5-PDA-CL64494-REV5(VIA).tar. However when i did that and try to flash, odin reports: "Check image files!!"

Mar 12, 2010I'm having a problem with my phone, I've had 2 lines show up at the top of my screen in the past couple of days. They're both multi-coloured and definitely look glitchy. They show up even in boot screens, fastboot, recovery, etc. I thought it might have been a problem with Galax0 that I was running, so I tried to re-flash it with Odin, and Odin seems to finish, but the phone does not actually get flashed. It stays at my previous firmware, with all apps installed, but when it reboots with Odin, the screen doesn't work (except in between the two lines at the top, so I can just see the bar at the top). I pull the battery and reboot, and it works, but is very glitchy.

Mar 13, 2010After countless calls to t-mobile I have *FINALLY* received my update, which means now that I've got the updated kernel I'm ready to upgrade to BH_MAN's rom... But of course if something goes wrong I'd hate to ODIN back to a buggy system. So my question is this: can anyone instruct me on the process of creating a new ODIN file on a system with the updates?
