Samsung Captivate :: Cool Trick For Quick Brightness Change
Jul 21, 2010
If you swipe your finger on the notification bar (with the panel still up), you can change your brightness, anywhere that bar is present! Useful when auto brightness isnt on and you need a quick brightness change. I'm not sure if this is a touchwiz feature or an android feature.

I haven't confirmed if this trick can be achieved on the default or other home launchers, but just now, I was able to overlap widgets together. Could be a bug with LauncherPro. I can actually press in between the top layer of widgets to access the underlying Facebook widget.

I have a htc sensation xl. My brightness control stopped working and I now I can't change the brightness anymore. It doesn't matter if I set to 30% or 100%, the brightness stays the same.I can only adjust the brightness from 0 to 25%. I already did and wipe and stiched a phone.

This screen is unnecessarily bright in total darkness- is there a better screen brightness app that can bring the backlight down more than the settings allow?

I set the phone to not set brightness automatically and I put the brightness to the minimum. Every time I bring down the notification bar, the brightness automatically raises nonetheless and it's starting to really p.m.o.

Curious if any of the captivate owners are experiencing this. If you set your brightness to max, and turn off power saving mode. Have you noticed, when your battery starts to get really low, the phone ignores your max brightness setting, and reverts to a lower brightness?

Just curious what brightness setting everyone is using? I'm talking normal, run-of-the-mill settings not what you crank it to when you're outside, and not what you turn it down to for playing games in the dark. I want your normal setting. Anyone have an idea of how much power usage is impacted? (Like, does 100% Brightness use 50% more power than 10%, or does it use 400% more power?)

What's the quickest way to enable sideloading within the phone? (the proper way without using the Android Central Sideload Wonder Machine 1.0). Certain apps seem to want the actual phone to be sideloading-enabled like titanium backup and juicedefender.
I already rooted my machine using one lag fix which worked great. The simplest way to enable sideloading seems to be with "root explorer".

Has anyone tried that? I would try unleashthebeast but I'm scared to lose my at&t bloatware in case I need to go back to square one.

What is the difference between "automatic brightness adjustment" and "power saving mode" which has the description "save power by adjusting image and adjusting LCD brightness"? Which one should I have on to conserve battery? It sounds like the do the same thing.

Anyone seeing an issue where they charge to 100% percent overnight, pull the phone off the charger and see a very quick drop to 90%?I know the HTC Evo had this problem, and it seems like my phone is doing as well.I charge it all night, pull it off the charger and surf for like 10 minutes and the battery level plummets to 90%.Its interesting to note that if you charge the phone to 100%, turn it off and charge it, the battery indicator will display 90% and take about 10 mins to get to 100%.you then turn it on and charge it, the battery will be at 90% and will take another 10 minutes of charging to reach 100%.This is basically the HTC charging trick. After doing the charge while on/charge while off cycle several time, the battery will truly be at 100%. The problem is, I dont really want to do this every time I charge my phone.

So I have had my phone since before launch and I have noticed the battery drain as others have but here is my question. Do you think it is the battery or the phone?
If I can go to the store and just get a new battery that would be nice because I have rooted and customized and downloaded apps and if it is the battery that is causing the problem it would be so much more convenient to get a new battery.

I got AT&T Samsung Captivate i897 (2.1 Eclair). I unlocked and rooted my phone. I was using simple free phone earlier which doesn't require data plan but after two weeks I bought samsung captivate, AT&T added $25 data plan. I got my phone from AT&T store where my friend works so he took my data plan out of the plan for now but he said they will find out and add into your plan again. Also, He said that they recognize by your IMEI number. My question is: Is there anyway I can change my IMEI number? I was thinking to use my simple free Nokia phone's IMEI number and use it for Samsung Captivate so AT&T thinks that I am using Nokia phone.

I'm new to android..this is my first android phone. Im not rooted..running on 2.1 What do I have to do to change the theme? In the marketplace I saw a cool windows 7 theme but it said...(the app is by "diceman4") I need another app from the market but when I look for that app I can't find it. I guess its because at&t won't let it show. Basically I would like to know how to change themes. do I have to pay for each theme? If I have to root then I'm out of luck.

I'm trying to control to turn screen off/on. I'm using device HTC G1 (1.6). To turn off screen I write:
WindowManager.LayoutParams lp = getWindow().getAttributes();
lp.screenBrightness = 0f;
getWindow().setAttributes(lp);
But if I want to turn on screen:
lp.screenBrightness = 1f;
getWindow().setAttributes(lp);
Screen not turn on.
if lp.screenBrightness = 0.02f;
screen change bright, but not turn off.
Which right way to control by screen?

Any app that will automatically change the screen brightness based on a defined battery level. Preferably with the option to define how much the screen is dimmed as well.

my phone is Samsung Galaxy Mini which is a ldpi device which now runs on an ICS rom. I am trying to change the color for the brightness sliders and volume sliders. Which .xml need to be edited to change the colour..
I decompiled framework-res.apk and changed hex color values under @id/ progress and @id/secondary progress in "progress_horizontal.xml", also changed colors of few pngs in drawable-mdpi in framework,now the progress seek bar has changed the color,but brightness slider color remains the same.
I then decompiled systemui.apk and changed the hex color values under @id/progress in "adi_seekbar.xml",but nothing got changed..
Which .xml is associated with the seek bar for brightness and volume slider? Or should i deal with smali files to change the color of brighntness slider and volume slider..

I am trying to resolve following task: smooth change of brightness from 100% to 0%, but can't gain effect of smoothness. Want to emphasize that I am using following approach of brightness change. The recommended one.
WindowManager.LayoutParams lp = window.getAttributes();
lp.screenBrightness = floatPercent;
// 0 - 1 window.setAttributes(lp);
Well, it obviously works, but not smooth. I will describe logic. I have a thread that changes brightness:
while (isRunning()) { Thread.sleep(sleepTime);
spentTime+=sleepTime;
view.post(new Runnable() {
public void run() {
changeBrightness();
} } );
}
We have duration of brightness change, for example 10 seconds. I calculate next value of floatPercent (see code snippet above) the way, sleepTime should always be less than 50ms. So looks like it had to be smooth. But I always get not smooth transition. It relates specially the range of 0% - 5% of brightness. Smoothness is completely lost on this brightness range. What can you propose?

Anyone know a way (or an app) that will change the brightness depending on whether the phone is plugged in or not. I would like it to on full brightness all the time when the USB is plugged in, but use auto-brightness when running on battery.

I just picked up the phone yesterday and love many things about it however I do not like the look of the UI at all, it looks very amateurish and "cheap". I know there are many themes available out there but do they work on this phone? Does it require a custom ROM? I assume it needs to be rooted to get a custom theme, right? I want something that will change the look of every screen...dial pad, text messages, menus, settings. Imam really not liking the white text on black background.

Has anyone been able to change there lock screen? I am wanting to take it back to the vanilla side slide with answer and mute or even the up and down slide like the HTC's have. Has anyone found an app worth having to do this? I have read about alot of the apps but they get a lot of mixed reviews that they only sometimes work or are bugged? Just wondering if anyone has been able to do this yet and what they used?
