Samsung Captivate : Slow Getting Out Of A Call
Sep 17, 2010
I came from iphone and love this phone sooo much more except for one thing that is bugging the crap outta me. With the iphone when I hung up a call it instantly goes back to whatever screen I was on and I can instantly lock the screen. With the captivate it flashes call ended...wait...then call time...wait...then finally out of the call and I can lock the screen.

I have noticed that if I ever turn my captivate off and then reboot it; it will take anywhere from 3-5 minutes for the Captivate to fully boot and become usable. Prior to then it is unbelievably laggy and if I even try to dial out it freezes.
I moved my 4gb of music from the internal SD card to the external SD card thinking that may make a difference but that did not solve the problem.

When I use the Gmail app it loads very quick and reliable. But when I load the Email app which launches Yahoo or the stand alone yahoo email app, it takes forever to load and 50% of the time it crashes. Anyone else have this problem?

I switched from an iPhone to the Captivate on July 27. AT&T will rue the day! Has anyone else seen a sharp increase in your data usage?

Is there a way to keep my phone from vibrating upon receiving a text message when I'm on a call? I want to keep vibration on, just not when I'm on the phone.

I bought my captivate 3 weeks ago from Amazon. It works well overall and I do enjoy a lot. Besides the GPS issue, low in-call volume bothers me all the time. Calls can only be heard clearly in a very quiet place, otherwise I need to keep saying sorry to people on the other end of line. I did search around the forum, no useful information on this subject can be found. So I am curious whether this issue only happens randomly on some handsets or it is a already solved issue which no one even bothers now?

I've had my captivate for about 2 months. Lately, it seems to be dropping almost every single call I make - sometimes 30 seconds in, sometimes a few minutes in. I'm making the calls in my apt in the middle of a big city where I have 5 bars and 3G service.
I can't say for sure but I feel like this really started happening after the JH7 update. I couldn't get my update OTA because my phone wouldn't communicate with the ATT servers, so I did it through the version available on xda of JH7.

This phone is advertised as having simultaneous voice and data multi tasking, but when I'm in a call, i can't access the internet, app store, etc. Web pages never load, and at the app store home page it says "no connection" when you scroll to the bottom. I'm new to android, and hope I'm just missing a setting or something.

Did anyone notice that you can't use the camera to take a picture/video when you are on a call? First phone I've owned to prevent this.

Okay this is incredibly annoying. My Captivate locks while I am in a call. If I pull the phone away from my ear, the screen will stay blacked out until I press the power button. For a split second, the screen shows locked then automatically transitions to the phone UI. Even if I use speaker phone, the phone eventually locks and I must depress the power button to end the call or dial other numbers. Is this normal for this device? I previously owned the iPhone 3g and the screen would black out, but would come right back on when you moved the phone away from your face or if you just shook the phone a bit.

I dearly dearly miss the the separate call button in my prior phone, that I could access no matter what app or screen I was in. With android, it is huge step backward, where you have to first click the home screen to get to the call button. Please tell me I am overlooking something very simple because I cannot imagine Android missing out such a big part. Or please tell me if there is a better home screen replacement that does exactly what I mentioned above. Will really appreciate any responses.

I made the switch from a BB Bold 9000 to the Captivate last Friday and so far I am in love! There is just one issue that I would love to gloss over but it's important given that it is a phone so I'd like your input. There was one other thread on this that sounds kind of like what I'm experiencing but I just wanted to be sure before I go in and exchange it.
When I am on a call, it is rather difficult for me to hear the person on the other end. I have the volume turned all the way up but not only is that not that loud but they also sound muffled. If it were one or the other I might be able to deal, but I never had trouble hearing on my BlackBerry and I never had the volume turned all the way up. It's gotten to the point where I'm unknowingly pressing the phone against my ear really hard so I can hear better. Has anyone else noticed that callers sound muffled? Should I exchange it?

On the Captivate for AT&T, is there a way to set up call forwarding to my home number BEFORE I travel to another country? When travelling I don't want my phone to ring or else i'd get charged international roaming rates for the voicemail if one is left, so I need any incoming calls to go immediately straight to my home phone without the call reaching the Captivate while i'm abroad. While i'm overseas I use my phone for text messaging, no voice to save money. I do this with my Palm Treo Pro all the time when travelling, set up the network so that the call immediately gets forwarded to my home number.

Is it normal that my Captivate makes this weird buzzing sound while the phone is making a call? Also, while I'm talking to someone on it, you can still hear that buzzing sound as they talk. IDK if it's a speaker issue or an AT&T issue or what.

So I'm on my #3 Captivate now.. and I need to get some other people's experience on these items. First off, my #1 Captivate would get hot while on voice call (lets say 15min), the #2 phone would NOT get hot even after a 30min call. The #2 phone also had the longest lasting battery of the 3 as well. But the phone could not see ANY satellites so back it went. #3 phone - I'm not having the best experience with - I downloaded the BatStat widget to monitor temp and battery percentage.. So I dialed my wife's phone with the battery at 35%, and temp at 36 degrees Am I in the same boat as others with these two issues combined? I will most likely return the phone again tomorrow.

I saw an Android tip that said "Use the power button to end a call", but it needed to be turned on in the Accessibility menu. When I got to Settings->Accessibility, it is grayed out and it says "Downloaded accessibility application is required to activate". What app do I need to download to enable this accessibility setting?

I am having trouble hearing the beeps that are heard for incoming calls when I am listening to music. Is there anyway to change this to something more obvious?
Either making it louder and the music playing quieter, or even pausing the music and notifcation sounds or ringtone playing would be good. I cant seem to find a fix. I am missing many calls like this.

AT&T coverage in my area is less than stellar, so I occasionally get dropped calls. Also, I sometimes tend to piss my GF off, and she hangs up on me unexpectedly .
Given both these situations, I'd like to know if there was a way to increase or change the call failed/ended tone. Problem is, I can't hear it.

I got my phone on Monday and I've noticed that when somebody is talking to me on the phone it causes a vibration type noise. I've tried lowering the volume but it still seems to be doing it. Not to mention, even with the audio turned all the way up it's hard to hear the people I'm talking to.

Is it just me or does the call screen (what displays when there is an incoming/active/ended call) look like crap? Ugly colors, minimal layout, contact picture too small, etc... So many other features on the phone are so polished, it just seems odd that the call screen would look so unfinished - it's almost looks like a development placeholder that they never got around to updating.

I have been trying to optimize on OpenGL render, and I've come upon an irreducible problem. It seems that on the G1 a call to eglSwapBuffers will always take at least 9ms. I understand that the buffer swapping is restricted to a maximum of 60Hz (well, the refresh rate of the screen, which in this case happens to be 60Hz). But I'm never seeing it take less than 9ms, even when I'm doing more than 8ms of work.
Has anyone seen this? I've been reading through the code and can't find anywhere that there is explicit mention of a fixed delay. Not that I was really expecting to find something like that. What I do find is that the swap code eventually calls unlockAndPost and then lock on the underlying surface. The unlockAndPost causes the underlying driver to start the swap and the lock waits for that to finish. The driver is told to do the swap via an IOCTL call on /dev/ graphics/fb0 that actually does a BLT.
I wonder if the IOCTL round trip to the kernel and the thread switching time is adding up to make eglSwapBuffers so slow? Or if the requested BLT takes this long? If the BLT were actually taking something close to this long that would explain things because the lock call waits until the BLT is done (at least that's what it looks like to me).
As partial confirmation of this, when I up the surface size by going to an RGBA_8888 surface the eglSwapBuffers call goes from taking 9ms to taking 15ms. Which pretty much means you can never get 60 frames per second using an RGBA_8888 surface.

Often during my calls I can hear a call waiting tone (double beep) but when I look at the screen there is no parallell call? Am I hearing the other persons call waiting or is it a glitch in my phone? I had this issue on every ROM, 2.1, 2.2 and live in Sweden (if it makes a difference)
