Samsung Captivate :: Any Toggle Switch To Disable 3G?
Jul 25, 2010
I have an AT&T Captivate with a 200 MB data plan. I want to have an easy toggle switch to disable any data transfer that counts toward that 200 MB. So far I've only done mild browsing/email and navigation off wireless, yet I've already used 67 Mb in 4-5 days. Anybody else having similar experiences?
I've tried the APNDroid widget set to "Red", but when I disable Wifi, the 3G icon pops right up in the notification bar and 3G seems to work normally. I've also tried the JuiceDefender "Toggle Mobile Data" and tapped it to make it yellow "ON", and again the 3G pops up when I disable WiFi. Anybody having any luck disabling 3G? Also, it would be nice to still get push gmail, which seems like it wouldn't using much data.

On my Captivate, sometimes when I boot up (turn on phone) it does not make any sound. I prefer it that way, but must have turned it "off" inadvertently. Not sure what I did - is it an app I downloaded maybe, or perhaps a certain keystroke?

I'm seeing strange photos in this widget when I click on the weather part of the widget, and then select the white helmet-looking icon that pops up second from the left. A sequence of about five photos pop up. They appear to be photos taken from the road in and around the city I traveled to today. One photo has today's date time-stamped on it...I'm not taking any photos today so not sure why they would appear.
I'm sure there is a simple explanation, I just can't figure out what the photos are supposed to be and why they pop up from within this widget.

AT&T decided that it won't allow its users to have any unlimited data plans for smartphones after like june of this year. My unlimited plan is grandfathered in, and I would like to keep it that way. but if i go to the at&t store and buy a captivate like I want, they are going to make me change my contract from the unlimited I have now to either 200mb or 2gb per month when they activate the phone. Would anyone know a way to buy a captivate and get it working with my current service without getting screwed out of my unlimited data by at&t? Is it really as simple as buying one from another source and transferring my sim card to the captivate?

Can someone post the different types of toggle switches you can get for this phone? I was looking through the 'post your screens' thread and I see all of these cool toggle switches for silent mode, vibrate, airplane, etc. But no one post the names of them or where to find them.

I am getting things back to my comfort zone...but, I lost my "network" toggle switch! I've noticed there are several "switches" in the market, but none for the network and free. Anyone have any suggestions?

AT&T falsely advertised a $349 off contract price and then changed it on launch day.Samsung Captivate $499 Off Contract » BriefMobile
This is unbelievable. Totally false advertising. Twitter and Facebook hold weight today in terms of press releases... I think ATT really screwed up on this one big time!

For those of you trying to squeeze as much time out of the battery as possible, I came across this nifty program which I don't think has been mentioned yet: AppBrain: Y5 - Battery Saver - Android app on AppBrain Official: Y5 Battery Saver: Home. When you connect to a Wi-Fi network, it uses the GSM base tower identifier (CellID) to determine the location of the Wi-Fi network and stores it in memory. It does not use the GPS. I saved my home network earlier this afternoon and went out, Wi-Fi was turned off while I was out, then after I came home and started using my phone, I was connected again, so it seems to be working so far.

Probably belongs in the AT&T section but that's basically what this is When I got my Captivate, I renewed my line on the family plan for 2 years. Question is, can I switch the renewed contract to another line on my family plan or the only way is to return the phone, cancel the renewal and resign for the 2 years on the second line?

I'm having the wifi craziness that some of us have on my home network (Zyxel N router) After I set it to static IP, it worked a bit better, but now crashes the router and kills the network! I have no problems at work where we only use G. Is there anyway to disable N or force a G connection?

I found disabling javascript on my dolphin web browser make navigation really really fast almost 3 times faster and use a lot less data to charge a web and battery last longer...
The thing is most of the website i browse during the day i don't really need javascript plus if i use roaming i can browse a lot of more with my restricted data plan but some times for certain site i really need javascript or they don't even work or work really bad.
I tought would be really useful a shortcut wich enable/disable javascript on demand with just one click instead of going in setting every time.Do you think is possible trought a bookmarklet enable or disable js?Do you know other browsers at the same level of dolphin with this feature?

Just got a captivate yesterday and coming from an Incredible so far there are some things I really like about this phone and a couple not so much. One thing I can't figure out is how to disable the default email viewer? I am getting 2 notifications every time a email comes in. I get one in my gmail launcher and another in the notification bar. The one in the notification bar takes me to the email viewer that is blue and black and is the one I want to turn off.

I've noticed when the phone goes into standby mode (press the right power button), the 3G eventually turns off. Is there a way to prevent that from happening? I'm assuming I can't get any notifications (i.e. Instant Messenger clients, Google Voice, etc.) while the 3G is off, but not sure. I'm also assuming 3G goes into sleep mode, as when I power the phone up I don't see the 3G icon (is that assumption correct?).

Okay, I've done lots of searching and can't find a way to disable voice search. I know, I know, everyone else in the world seems to want it. But I don't use it, have no reason to use it, and it takes up memory. I've been to the (lack of) settings and can't find anything.I am rooted, but not familiar enough with it to know how to remove the application manually.Using a task killer works for a few minutes, but it takes less than 5 minutes to return on its own.

This is my first post here so just a heads up I haven't rooted my phone or anything I'm pretty tech savvy but completely noob when it comes to android.
That being said, I've installed handcent mms and curious, is there a way I can disable the native mms app on the phone? It's rather annoying having to delete two different sets of notices and messages.

In the Youtube App on Captivate:I tried to search for this song "being a dickhead's cool" , and it just won't show the search results. When I try to change the SafeSearch settings, the option is grayed out. WTF, I feel like I have an Apple phone. PS, funny song by the way.

Does anyone know if it's possible to disable the vibration feedback from the Samsung keyboard? Disabling haptic feedback works, but that effects the entire phone (i.e. long presses and home keys).

I have had my Captivate for a couple of weeks now and love it except for one major issue. I keep dropping calls -- The back light comes on randomly and then my chin hits the end call button or other keys and I lose the call. I have had no success figuring out how to disable the backscreen from coming on during a call or if there is another solution that would work. I do not want to return the phone. Can anyone think of a solution?

I am annoyed with the fact that the phone sleeps when on a call. I primarily use it with bluetooth while driving and to end a call i need to unsleep the phone and then I can do so.
Is there an app or setting that will disable the sleep "feature". To me this is one of the most annoying things about this phone.

I'm working on a Push Notifications library for Android (http://deaconproject.org/) that needs to take action if network connectivity is interrupted or changed - namely, it needs to re-initiate a server connection or pause its operation until network connectivity is available. This seems to work fine using and Android BroadcastReceiver for "android.net.ConnectivityManager.CONNECTIVITY_ACTION".
My problem is in testing the library - I would like to automatically test the library's response to a broken network connection, or a transition from 3G to WiFi, under various configuration conditions. The problem is, I don't want to sit with the emulator and hit F8 all day.
Is there a way to programmatically manipulate network connections on Android from within a jUnit test without resorting to toggling Airplane Mode? I've already tried issuing commands to the emulator via the console, manipulating the GSM mode, etc, but while the phone state changes on the display, the Internet connection remains up.

Looking for a simple data toggle I can put on the home screen to turn data on/off with one press. I don't need multiple button for BT, WiFi, Gps because of the touchwiz drop down. Anyone using one with any kind of luck?

I was searching online to see how to make a shortcut to toggle the 3G connection on and off without having to sift through multiple menus. I came across the method of having a long press on the power lock button to pull up the menu but mine does not show the network data on/off option and never has. It only shows
* Silent mode
* Airplane mode
* Power off
* Restart
Nothing else. Is there a way I can make a shortcut or some other way to ADD the network data on/off on this pull up menu from the power lock button? By the way why would my phone not have this option from the start when the phone came with Gingerbread and was updated to ICS 4.0.4? I have Sprint so they call this the Epic 4G Touch, so not sure if it was Sprint that buggered this from the other SGS2s that have this feature or not.
