Motorola Droid X :: Restoring Apps / Shortcuts / Widgets
Sep 27, 2010
So every time you guys are flashing different roms and stuff, are you starting from scratch downloading all your apps and configuring widgets and your home screens and all that stuff?I'd like to play around with different builds but the thought of setting everything back up, potentially multiple times, is daunting. Are you using something to backup/restore this stuff?

I have home, home++, and GDE. In all three when I am trying to place a deleted shortcut in it does not even show up. For example in home++ I deleted camera thinking i wouldn't need it. Now i need it for screenshots how do I get that icon back on? Sorry for making a whole thread for this.

My screen all the sudden would not show any widgets or shortcuts.I think it started happening when sliding open the keyboard and the screens rotating. When i would get out of an app each 3 of the screens was just blank with my wallpaper the only thing there and the the menu slider button.

I just activated my new X.I signed into my Google account and all contacts restored but no apps.I went to the market and only the paid apps are showing. How do I get the free apps back.I have "My backup pro" backups on my Droid SD card. Can I copy the backups to the X SD card and restore from that? Will it try to overwrite the paid apps I already installed? Will the restored apps show up in the market as downloads?

I want to be able to restore all my apps and data the easiest way possible when flashing new ROMS, what is the best way to do this?I was thinking one of these ways might work?
1. Advanced restore of other ROM and only restore data, but could this be problematic?
2. Titatinium backup: What batch should I run when I'm backing up my stuff and what batch should I run when I'm restoring on a new ROM?

I've had a problem with my apps not automatically restoring when I flash a custom ROM.I'm not using titanium but using Google's service as I log in with mg Google account. Is this a known issue or am I doing something wrong? The last ROM I tried to flash was Chevy's 4.7 and no apps came through from the market but all of my contacts synced.

Had issues with install of Watermark'D theme over CM6 rom. Finally got all that sorted but had to elect to install Google Apps separately after the fact. I restored backups of all my apps through Titanium Backup except for three - Tweetdeck, Weather Channel, and Yellowbook. Titanium would not restore them - I would click on install, it would try, then come back with an installation failed message. Went to both the market directly and Appbrain and attempted to install them from there. Found them listed but when I clicked on it to install got an item not found message. Tried to install Tweetdeck from the apk and got the same message as with Titanium. Oh and have downloaded other app from market successfully. Any ideas?

So I did a batch backup with Titanium and when I went to restore on a new ROM I was trying (first time I'm trying this), when restoring all of the apps, it didn't do it automatically? Like I was reloading a bunch of apps, and it prompted me for EACH APP. Is there a way to just press restore on a batch I backed up, and it just puts everything on the phone that I selected? It took a long time sitting there and pressing ok after each app.

I have A LOT of apps on my Droid. Way too many, but that's a subject for another day. Getting to them on the default menu is impossible, its WAY to much scrolling. My home screen space is very limited - the left side is a full screen calendar, and the right side is a nearly full screen task list. The main home screen loses some space to a clock widget, so I end up with only a 4x3 space on my center screen to work with. Given all of the apps I have and all of the functions they do, this doesn't work. I need direct & instant access to at least a dozen things on the home screen, Plus much more a few clicks away. I have thus far found TWO decently sound organizational options for my Droid, but neither quite do it for me. Hopefully you guys know of another one that I have not yet found.Folders on the home screen. Put things in folders.Problems: Despite ability to name folders, Grey folders all look the same, making it harder to quickly grab the one you want when there is a screen full of them.impossible to nest folders (this feature alone would solve my problems)Folders don't auto close, pressing the home button takes you back to the home screen with the folder still open (yet one more button to hit to close it).Great app on the marketplace called "Apps Organizer"Pros:makes a list of all your apps, then lets you assign label(s) to them (like gmail). Then you can create shortcuts on your home screen to a specific label.Lets you select a unique Icon for each label.
Problems:When you click on the shortcut to open up that category, the tray of Icons is TINY. Significantly smaller than normal. This makes reading text labels of the apps "legible", but only with good eyesight. No nesting. No shortcuts to gmail labels, direct dial, direct messaging. So those groups of icons all have to go in the folders the plain grey indistinguishable folders.Temporary workaround:Create a folder for gmail labels, direct messaging and calling "folders" on the home screen.create 1 "reorganized" apps menu folder on the home screen that would link to ALL the apps, organized by labels into 6-8 categories. No more endless scrolling for the "occasional use" app.Create half a dozen labels for HIGH use applications and place those on the home screen for direct access to those categories.None of the options presented REALLY get the job done. grey indistinguishable folders remain, I still have to launch everything out of the TINY icons and text used by Apps Organizer, direct message, email, calling, labels still needs some work. Any suggestions? Am I missing any options in the above, or other ideas that would enhance this spit and duct tape organizational system?

Is there a good program to backup your all your apps, files, shortcuts, bookmarks and personal settings. I know Astro has a "backup" function but I don't know what it actually backs up. I know you can back up your contacts Google.
I guess what I'm asking is if there's a way to "clone" your Droid, not just the SD card.

What are your favorite home screen widgets? There are plenty of lists of favorite apps but I prefer the on screen functionality of widgets without having to open the app. Here's what I am using so far:
Pandora
S2 Calendar
gTasks
MixZing
MotoTorch
Weather Forecast
If clicking the widget just opens the program then to me it's not really a widget even if the program creates an entry in the add widgets menu. So what are your favorites?

I am googled and searched and all i keep finding is apps that will go onto the lock screen. I am looking to put Beautiful Widgets on the lock screen without having to put an app to edit the lock screen. I swore i read somewhere and seen it on a picture, but I don't know how to do it. Is it a setting that i am missing or a launcher or something. Any help would be great, like i said, I have been looking for a little over 2 weeks and can't find anything but Fly Screen and Lock Widget locker or something. Both of those are great programs, but not what i am looking for.

once installed, this app allows you to change the lock slider to various other options, lets you add widgets from other apps to the lock screen and also lets you add other shortcuts.there are lots of options in the settings menu as well.

So I removed a widget and then went back to put it back on and got the msg there wasn't room. I played around a bit moving and removing items to make room. I learned that while there doesn't seem to be room for the widget, there is room for the "program" for the same app/function.So now I'm wondering, what is the difference between these three? Will one result in more or less battery drain? Is the widget quicker to launch it's program equivalent?Should I avoid placing one type on the home page?

It's very easy to add shortcuts or widgets onto the home screen but I can't find how to delete them. For widgets I can delete the app If I don't want it anymore, but If i still need it how do i take it off.I added a mail shortcut on the home screen, and I haven't been using it since my e-mails are synced. I need the room on my home screen but can't delete it.

I've had this phone for about 3 days and really like it.Today however I'm trying to customize my screen more, and find I can't add certain shortcuts or widgets.Basically any shortcut or widget that requires an extra step (like selecting which contact to put on) doesn't show up on the screen after the selection.

I recently rooted my Epic 4G following this guide: joeykrim-SDX Permanent Root for Epic (and Verizon Fascinate).I then went ahead and removed some of the "bloatware" applications using this guide here: [GUIDE] How to Remove Pre-Installed Apps for FREE - xda-developers.I did successfully root my phone, and the applications I removed are no longer there, but now the shortcuts that can be placed in the Home (or any section) no longer remain after I shutdown the phone. Widgets and Folders on the other hand do get saved by the phone and remain after a reboot. Is there something that I may have removed that shouldn't have been? and if so is it easy to recover? Would a custom ROM fix this situation? Or is there a program that I can use to restore all the default applications (without un-rooting).

I'm redoing my home screen, and I want to have a few text icons that take me directly to specific home screens. Apex launcher has action shortcuts for this, but they are only 1x1. I cannot use widgets to get these actions... I have to use shortcuts. I have done what I want with 1x1 shortcuts, but they are just too small for my taste. I really want 2x1 shortcuts. I have not been able to figure out how to make them with either Simple Text or Desktop Visualizer.

How do you delete the widgets/shortcuts on the seven home screens. I accidentally put something on the same home screen twice and want to delete one of them. And how do you order them how you want them to be?
Then, how do I sync my iTunes library to the phone?

How are you restoring your apps?
Titanium Backup?
Astro?
Manual?
If manual, do you keep a list of which apps you've got installed so that you can restore them more easily? Does anyone restore /data from 2.0.1? Or will that just cause more problems? I've used Astro in the past, but not for ROM purposes. And I've got Titanium installed, but have never used it. It seems like there are several options but I've yet to hear of any preferred option from anyone. Look forward to getting in on this ERE25 action!

I like to keep several direct dial and direct message shortcuts on my home screen, but after installing a new ROM (in this case BB 0.8), the shortcuts are gone. It's not the biggest deal, but if I could find a way to preserve them for easy restoration when I update, that'd be great.

I came from a BB and I had all the important shortcut keys memorized so that I could open them instantly. Is there a way to do this with the Droid? I don't like having to do two key combos or having to switch to the home screen and/or app screen. Plus, I don't like to have a lot of clutter on my home screen.Naturally, this would only work whilst using the physical keyboard but hen I'm browsing the web or talking on gtalk, I might think of something and want to quickly bring up a notepad app to write down some notes.I know that it's nit-picking, but I like to be quick and efficient with my phone. In all other respects/departments, this phone ROX!

i noticed that the majority of ROMs (if not all of them) require you to wipe system/data/cache before you install. my understanding is that doing this will basically reset your phone back to what it was when you first got it. i want to install a ROM, but really don't want to have to go and install all my apps again and fix all the settings for each etc. i noticed in Titanium Backup that you can backup apps, system or both. if i were to back up both and then install the ROM, when the phone rebooted, could i just install Titanium Backup and restore apps and system? would return my phone to how it was before i wiped? if this is false, are there any other ways to facilitate the restoring of stuff after wipe?

After updating to 2.2 I put all of the apps I could from my phone to my SD card.I did this so I could back them up because my phone was having LED light issues so I got it replaced. So I took it to Verizon and they did a reset and it didn't help so they ordered a new phone for me.After this reset the apps from my SD card automatically "restored" (the phone used this word after it finished) my apps. Now, I have received the new phone and it is not automatically restoring this time. How can I get them to restore? When I go to applications in the settings menu it doesn't show any on the SD card. Also when I go to the market it only shows my purchased apps in the downloads section. Also my phone is NOT rooted.Any help is appreciated

I have been playing with more roms the last few days and as such, i have been restoring my apps and setup quite frequently.I know that the "standard" advice has been to use titanium backup and backup and restore apps. When i started this latest round of "ROM exploration" i decided to try a different method. I have always been a fan of AppBrain and so i decided to try their Fast Web Installer to install apps based on what was in my previous app list.I like this method because it forces me to actually audit what apps I have on my phone and delete the ones that I no longer use or need.I know my settings aren't maintained but I don't find it too difficult to bring my phone back to standard working order.Just thought i might share my experiences with everyone especially the ones new to root. This forum has been extremely helpful to me in my rooting process so I want to give something back to it
