Motorola Droid :: Will Gps Work With Non-activated Phone?
Nov 26, 2010
Just as the title says, I am wondering if the GPS on the Droid will be able to connect and work without the phone being activated on Verizon. I would have an offline GPS app that has all the maps downloaded so I wouldn't need a 3G connection. Would the phone still be able to pick up the satellites and my position even if m not on Verizon?

So I switched to the 2.2 leak and decided to do the .sbf method to get 2.1 back because I thought 2.2 was a bit buggy for my tastes. Unfortunately, when I had gotten 2.1 back on my phone, I could not activate. It simply said it cannot do it. I tried switching back (again) to 2.2, same problem. Tried manual user activation via ##7762726, still nothing.

When I buy the Evo at Best Buy (pre-ordered), will they activate it in-store, or must I call Sprint and wait while they do something? I am already a Sprint customer and merely upgrading my line.

I was hearing things the first time this happened, but before I answered an incoming call on my Evo I heard a voice on the other end while my phone was ringing. Well today I heard it again so I decided to check it out, so I called myself on my girlfriends phone and lo and behold I could hear myself on my Evo while it was ringing before I even touched the slide to unlock.

I used to work with phones and am aware that most Android phones have two boxes you can check/uncheck the first time you turn them on. One says something about using your location for Google apps. The other says something like "allow Google to collect anonymous location data". When I got a new phone today, the clerk turned it on when I wasn't paying attention as part of the setup process and checked both boxes without checking with me first. Where can I disable these features now that the phone has already gone through its initial setup process?
Edit: Found the answer to one of these shortly after posting due to a better-worded search. Apparently turning off "Use wireless networks" and "Use GPS satellites" under "Location and security" turns off anonymous collection of data. (I had seen these while searching the phone earlier, but the caption does not make it clear that checking them enables Google to collect anonymous location data even when you aren't running any apps. It's only when you uncheck them and try to check them again that it pops up with this information.)

I need to go to the Verizon store to have them transfer contacts from my old work phone to my Droid. Is it going to write over the numbers I already have in my phone? My second question is my Droid is rooted with BB 0.4, is that going to be an issue when I go into the Verizon store? I'm not sure they would notice its rooted since they shouldn't go into any settings but maybe someone else knows more.

I really like the device but to be honest it seems complicated and it would be my first smartphone. I was wondering would this be a good smartphone for someone who really just wants a phone for texting and surfing the web? I'm pretty tech savy with computers I suppose but I wouldn't want to be overloaded I guess I'm trying to say.

I've been on the fence about rooting my droid, and looking through these tutorials it looks simple enough.
1. What are Kernels and do I need them exactly
2. Do I need a specific ROM to overclock or will just a plain rooted phone work
3. Do I need a nandroid backup?

Having trouble to get the headphones to work consistently with my DX. I've only gotten it to work once and I have no idea how I did it...When the headphones are plugged in I can hear the caller but they can't hear me, but once I unplug the headphones the normal mic input on the phone works correctly and the caller can hear me just fine. Are there settings that I need to adjust in order for the iphone headphones to work with DX?

I need help with understanding kernels, so far all I am able to find is that I need to find out what kernels work with my phone through trial and error because even if its the same phone a kernel may work for one person but not another. So to understand what a working kernel actually is like, I need to know what apps I need in order to see the product of an installed kernel. I know they have to do with getting the fastest processor speed, while getting the longest battery life, while getting the least amount of heat from the phones battery and processor.I figure to know if a kernel is cooperating well with my droid I need to know what is a normal battery/processor temperature for the motorola droid1? and what are kernel slots? what are standard/med/low voltages?I figure battery life is up to me to decide if it is good or not.

I use this browser on my NokiaN95. It's ridiculously fast and it pretty much does everything, even Flash... I've posted a link to their platform requirements page which is way over my newbie head -- so if you are a bit technically minded, can you tell me if this would work on the Droid? Also, if I would have just downloaded it to try it and it would it have NOT worked, could I have screwed something up by doing so? (I didn't try yet, thought I'd check first.) Bolt Browser - FAQ

Has anyone ran across a simple visor mount/holder that would work for the Motorola Droid? I am not looking for anything elaborate. I would want to reach up and answer the phone and use the phones speaker mode for talking or can be easily removed. Something basically like the bluetooth speakers they have for visors. I am surprised I have not been able to find one.
