Motorola Droid :: Applications That Not Work On Rooted Phones
Feb 11, 2010
I thought It would be nice if people listed the applications that don't work for them, and then say what ROM they are using that It doesn't work on Bugless Beauty.

I remember all the ruckus about security concerns for jailbroken iPhones, and after talking to a friend with one of these devices, I began to wonder if there were any similar concerns I should have with a rooted Droid?
1) Is it more important now to have a "pattern-protected" lock screen?
2) Do I need to create a unique password for SU access?
3) Do I need to be more concerned malware or data swiping from market apps?
I love my recently rooted Droid but assume that "with great power, comes great responsibility." Is my assumption correct, or do I need not be concerned?

I was wondering if any1 has made a revolution theme for stock rooted droids. I was running cm 6 with revolution theme remix but the battery was horrible at even 550 speeds. I really like the themes but hate the battery life of roms.

I was messing around with my phone being bored and went into the superuser permissions app. I was looking at all the entries that were in there and I know that it's just a list of permissions you've allowed on your phone. Anyway I wanted to see what would happen if I clicked on one of them. Well it cleared it from the list and I just clicked on all of them so when I'm in the SU app there is nothing there. Now when I try and get into one of my apps that require permission it tells me it requires root and doesn't have permission. So it looks like I blocked all permissions for my rooted apps. The question is how do I get it back? I'm sure I can just reflash a nandroid backup I have but I was wondering if there is any other way?

Just got my Droid X on Wednesday. So I initially tried rooting the manual way (How to get 2.2, Rooted, on your Droid X - Droid X Rooting - AllDroid Public Board - How to get 2.2, Rooted, on your Droid X - Droid X Rooting - AllDroid Public Board - Forum), ran into some trouble. Later found that it may have been due to some Moto driver issues. Was finally able to get the correct Moto drivers in by turning off debugging, plugging in as USB Mass Storage, and then it updated MotoConnect to a version that's apparently not available online.
Anyway, I rooted using the one-click root (DroidXRoot), was able to download wireless tethering which never actually worked. The program runs but it says "Unable to start tether". Don't know if this is related. So I'm trying to get clockwork mod, and I'm trying to deodex. I attempted to Deodex using xUltimate v2.2 and this link ([HOW-TO] Manually deodex your phone.), all ended up working, but when I got to the part where I have to enter the cmd lines, I failed. I run adb shell and it brings up a $ and then i type su and it says Permission Denied. Can't figure it out.
I've also tried installing clockwork through ROMManager, I hit Flash ClockworkMod Recovery, hit Droid X, and it says successfully downloaded ClockworkMod recovery. If i lick reboot into recovery it asks if i'm sure, I say yes, and nothing happens. I've also downloaded the file and placed it on tnhe root of my SD Card but I can't figure out any way to actually install it.
I thought I'd go back and start from scratch 2.1 now that all my drivers are in-line, but of course G** D*** Motorola brought down all the sbfs with their C&D. I've manually installed the Android SDK, I honestly don't even know WHAT I've done now, the files on my desktop that I've used consist of usbdeview, xultimate, DroidXRoot_v2, USB_Drivers, recovery-clockwork, update.zip, MotorolaConsumerDriver MotoConnect Installer, I've edited the PATH under my computer settings, I'm completely lost now. I just want to be able to run some themes! My initial goal was to deodex, and then it turned into this massive pile of ****.
I was thinking if I can get deodexed and clockwork mod recvoery working I probably will have solved any other problems in the process, and figure wireless tethering would prbably be included in that. Anyone have any idea AT ALL where I should go from here?

I've been on the fence about rooting my droid, and looking through these tutorials it looks simple enough.
1. What are Kernels and do I need them exactly
2. Do I need a specific ROM to overclock or will just a plain rooted phone work
3. Do I need a nandroid backup?

I just got the Droid 2 after using Blackberry phones for many years. I had the Blackberry Curve, and then went to the Blackberry Tour. For other users that have switched from a Blackberry, what sorts of things should I be aware of that might have been something I took for granted on a Blackberry that might require more of a work around on a Droid? I'm trying to get fully integrated to google apps for simplicities sake. I know there's the Push email thing, but I'm hoping just using everything through GMail will help that problem. I transferred my calender to Gmail from my Blackberry by exporting it to a Yahoo in syncing, and then going to Yahoo and exporting it to Outlook CSV, and then importing the CSV to Google.

I was wondering how these apps work. I was looking into Pandora. Seems pretty cool but then I saw that in order for these "streaming" apps to work, you're basically paying for internet time the whole time you're listening to the music, right? If this is the case, why use this type of app vs. simply downloading the music files to the phone?

Are we at a point where we need a subforum for rooted Heros? Lately I've been seeing a lot of suggestions, apps, discussion that is only applicable to rooted phones and the thread doesn't always specify that its for rooted only.

Will people smarter than me be able to create an exact replica of the HTC rom that suitable for flashing onto phones that boot the recovery image, so it retains the recovery image? (and thus keeping open the possibility of moving a any future homebrew 2.2 images etc). ill people smarter than me be able to extract the radio firmware for updating?Whilst i'm reasonably happy with the current hacked firmwares, they are all quite buggy in places, and would love to pickup something that is IDENTICAL to stock, aside from giving me root and the ability to change again in the future...

I read somewhere that rooted phones can use the mobile hotspot feature that most come with, without Verizon knowing about it. I've also however heard that sometimes it still gets back to the carrier and they cancel your service. I've been using my tethering in very small doses because I'm not sure if big red is monitoring me. If they aren't I want to take full advantage of the tethering feature.

I'm using Google Calendar and syncing it to my Eris, and for some reason it's damn flaky. Half the time it works, but then if, say, I delete one event out of a recurring pattern from the phone,com.htc. provider. calendar crashes every time the phone tries to update its calendar! It will continually do this until I force stop it, reset the calendar storage and re-sync manually from Google's servers. That, and I've deleted a few events on calendar.google.com and have re-sync'd the phone manually a bunch of times and it won't seem to affect the data on the phone. I mean, it's nice to not have to pay for push calendar sync (like Apple asks you to with MobileMe), but c'mon Google & HTC. First the YouTube app never works on mobile network, Google Maps won't let you arbitrarily pick a location to map to, and this calendar syncing bs? These are things that should just work on a phone with the Google logo on the back.

Currently I have an Eris with v3 Leak meaning I can't root. But my wife loves my phone so I plan on giving her mine and either getting another eris and rooting or a Moto Droid and rooting. I've been trying to read up on the Droid and the different ROMS available and have some questions.First I want to make a few things clear:
1. This IS NOT a phone comparison.
2. The Incredilble IS NOT an option since it can't be rooted and I don't want to spend $200 on it.
3. I'm looking for WELL INFORMED OPINIONS, if you don't have one keep moving there is nothing to see here.
To be fair I've obviously done a lot more reading on the Eris which is why I'm looking for well informed opinions from Droid owners that way I can make a well informed decision.

Just picked up the EVO 4G and looking to root in order to remove the Sprint apps and other bloatware (Peep, Footprints, etc.). I'm just trying to find out if it will be possible to use OTA Sprint firmware updates (i.e. the inevitable 2.2 down the road) once the phone is rooted, and if so, will it reset the phone (delete all data) or merely revoke root access? Down the line, I'm not so concerned about having root access, mostly right now with removing the excess.

I'll number these questions to make answering easier. 1) I'm only looking at GSM phones, I'm thinking about buying the hero on ebay next week. I'm wondering if I should wait for the GSM moto droid or a GSM htc passion. Or just get the hero now. The benifits of waiting for me personally is faster hardware, and better screen/resolution. The downfalls of waiting is I could be waiting a long time for a GSM version of those phones. 2) The biggest thing that concerns me is about buying the hero is performance. I have a iphone 2g and what pisses me off about it is the performance, and that it has no multitasking. If I get the hero I don't want the performance to bother me. I have no issues if I need taskiller to close a few apps every now and then to keep the performance good. I'd like to know if performance is a real problem, or just a minor annoyance. 3) Is the "jump to letter" feature in the music player? for example can I jump to the music artists that begin with Y, instead of scrolling from the top all the way down? 4) Is there a button to show your currently running apps? or your most recent apps? If so, which is it? running or recent? Can you launch apps from that screen? 5) Is the warranty on the European GSM hero valid in the United States? Is the warranty card that comes with the phone used for anything? do you need it to have a warranty on your phone? What does it say on it?

I'm still a little confused as to what the situation is here. With a rooted Android phone, are all non-free market apps unavailable, or just ones with copy-protection? For non-free, un-protected apps (are there any?), can they be purchased directly and installed on the phone without going through the market?
