HTC Magic :: Internet - Wifi - Costs
Jul 16, 2009
I have internet blox on my htc magic. It means unlimited internet in my country. This summer, I am going on holiday in an other country. They probably have a WiFi connection on the camping. Now my question is: does it cost me money if I use that wifi connection? Or do I get a warning or so when I am paying for the internet?

I bought the HTC Magic from Rogers instead of t-mobile, thinking 3G will work. I entered the unlock code included in my phone purchase. AT&T calls work fine, however I can't get 3G NOR edge working. No cellular data is being transfered.

I have a HTC Magic G2 and I would like to use the Internet connection of my computer (Windows XP). I have already installed a bluetooth (ANYCOM USB-200) and Wlan (Linksys Compact Wireless-G USB adapter). Which one would be the best to offer HTC an Internet connection and how I can setup the Internet connection?

I have updated my magic to android 1.5 and consequently had to set up the APN settings again. Now, for some reason, the 3g connection does not work anymore (they did before). I have checked that the settings are correct from Elisa, my carrier. I have ticked "mobile Network" on, I do not have "use only 2g" on, and everything else should be in place as well.Anyone have any idea, why is this?I am using magic bought from Taiwan in Finland.
1.) Model Number HTC Magic
2.) Firmware Version 1.5
3.) Baseband Version 63.18.55.06HU_6.35.07.29
4.) Kernel Version 2.6.27-5469d459 htc-kernel@and18-2 #901
5.) Build Number 3.03.751.4 CL#75468

I have been a very happy HTC Magic user for exactly 6 months now but then a strange thing happened; I work up new year's day and I could no longer connect to internet or use my apps (and the 'G' network symbol has disappeared from my system tray). I thought the network (SFR in France) may have had a hangover from the night before but no, the problem persisted into day 2. I went into the SFR retail shop on 2 January and the assistant played with every option of my handset's menu for 20 minutes before declaring "I suggest you go home and reinstall the OS from the CD that would have come with the phone".. or at least that's what I think he said as my grasp of French is not absolute. He also offered to send the phone away to reset it or something.
I am convinced, though, I didn't get a CD with the HTC because the box is only half the width of a CD! I recall a USB type cable in the box though. So I turned to these forums and tried the advice given previously by Carl C but that didn't help. I've tried every logical option in the phone's settings (and the 'G' icon does appear for half a second in the system tray after I change/save a setting, before disappearing again) so I'm convinced the problem does not lie there. I am even considering uninstalling some of my recent apps in case they may have inadvertantly caused this problem............

I am a new HTC Magic (Vodafone) user and have downloaded a number of useful Apps from the market. Since I work away from the UK (and have roaming disabled) and I have a Wi-Fi at home, I do not have a data pack included in my contract. However, I have found that a great App I downloaded - NetCounter - is reporting cell traffic that is going to end up costing me a lot of money.
So I have a few questions.
1) How do I switch between running applications, so I can see what's running?
2) How do I prevent certain Apps from starting whenever I power on the phone?
3) How do I see what Apps are connecting to the internet(ignoring the WiFi) and creating unwanted cell traffic.
4) Is there something I can disable so that I can use the phone normally, but prevent it from connecting to the internet unless I am back home and using the WiFi connection.

Does anyone have an idea what it costs in terms of juice/s to charge a Desire overnight for say 7 hours, as I'm sure many of us do?
Also, does the mains charger still continue to use some power when attached to the mains even when the device isn't attached, as dumb phone chargers apparently do?

I am currently on tmobile using a vibrant. The bugs with the vibrant are starting to bug me, and there is no where else to go to for tmobile. I am thinking about going to sprint for the EVO. I will have to figure out a way to get out of my tmobile contract, (hasn't been 14 days) if anyone wants to help me with ideas.
my main question is, is it true that you have to pay an extra $10 a month for the Evo? I don't have 4G in my area, do I still have to pay for it? What kind of deals can I get from sprint for a new contract? Can I keep my same number?

I got my HTC magic yesterday when i was away from home, I home earlier today and thought i would get the phone setup on my wireless, the phone detects every other network in my area except mine. I am currently writing this on my laptop via the wireless connection and it is detected by another pc wirelessly and my old N95 8Gb, its not out of signal as i have tried it almost sat on the router. I have checked through the routers setup and cannot see any settings that are wrong or would effect this.

Here is what I have learned thus far, comments, corrections welcome.
The Principle Behind GV
There is an excellent YouTube Video that explains the principles of GV: YouTube - GoogleVoice's Channel
So assuming you want to use the GV number as the only number you give everyone, here are some possible advantages and shortcomings:
ADVANTAGE: between the market app for your phone and the web interface, you can shut off any "Visual Voice Mail" (Verizon) service you might have, save a few dollars a month and some phone memory.
SHORTCOMING: The voice quality from GV is not as good as Verizon's but is acceptable especially given the transcription feature.
ADVANTAGE: Voicemail transcription. Very cool.
SHORTCOMING: Possible increase in Texting Costs. Assuming you do not have an unlimited texting plan, you need to shut off SMS text notification of new voicemail (defaults on I believe). You can receive email alerts for free, and if you use the Android GV app (and you should) you won't need either as the ap does the notification.
You can outbound text for free thru the web interface, inbound texts to your GV number that are passed through do count as out of plan text messages so you'll need to get around that using email notification. If you are a big texter and don't have an unlimited plan, this is going to be an issue if you want to maintain the illusion of having a single number.
SHORTCOMING: Possible increase in airtime costs. There are several caveats here. I will explain for a Verizon Wireless Plan with unlimited "In" minutes and the capability to assign 10 friends and family numbers as "In".
"In" means unlimited airtime.
Using GV for inbound and outbound calls, you will see two new numbers on your cell bill: for incoming calls including calls you initiate through the browser interface, you will see the GV number you chose.
For outgoing calls made from the handset using the GV app, you will see some number in your area code or a nearby area code that your cell dials to make the connection to the person you are calling. The person sees the GV number on their callerID but your phone actually dials another number to connect.
The way to get around these airtime costs given the Verizon plan scheme above is to add these two numbers to your Family and Friends list.
Note that the phone does seem to dial the same number to make outgoing connections. You (and I) will need to keep tabs on that to make sure it doesn't change.
I have heard about reliability issues but have none yet to report.
I haven't noticed any impact to in call voice quality that you might expect given what I assume is routing through GV infrastructure.

I'm interested in finding data on projected Android handset prices in the next 5 and 10 years. All I can find are titles of market research reports selling for $$$$$. I realize that the cutting edge phones will probably stay at the same price-points, but I'm wondering what future phones with current specs will cost. Will mid/low-end phones comparable to current Droid X, EVO, and or Incredible be available for ~US$50 in the next 5 years?

I have my new Magic and it works awesomely at the office, my wife's office, my inlaw's router, coffee shop routers.no problem.I take it home, where my 2 laptops, Wii, Palm and Zune all connect and work no problem. So all parts of the magic equation of me getting WiFi at home (thus saving my data plan from racking up huge bills) are a go, except it's not.I have a DLink 614+, and it'll see it, try to connect then say 'unsuccessful'. I've tried rebooting both items, changing the security options on the router etc... but to no avail. HTC Support says it could be something with THAT specific router, but they have exhausted their support binder.Short of swapping out the router with my inlaws, or buying a new one ('cuz then I'd have to change 2 laptops, a Wifi, Palm and a Zune), anybody have any suggestions to make this router work with my Magic?

I was just looking at my Verizon Plan, and though I don't have it currently as an option that I'm paying for, it costs $20 a month to use the 3G Hotspot feature? I thought this was just something the phone did through your unlimited data plan. if the 3G Mobile Hotspot app does indeed require this $20 a month charge, and whether there's any other app or way to get the same functionality without paying.

I'm experiencing some strange phenomenon on my HTC Magic. I have disabled my 3G, so I only use 2G networks.
But on random times, not very often, I suddenly get a message, saying I have new unread Gmail email. When I look at my Gmail inbox, my inbox is totally up to date! I think this is very strange, because I had 3G and WIFI disabled when I retreived these mails. Can Gmail email be retreived via the 2G network? As far as I know, email can not be retrieved via GPRS or other 2G network.

Just two quick questions: When connected to wifi, do internet connections made on the device automatically go via wifi as opposed to 3g etc and if not then is there a way to organize which wireless connection 'methods' have higher priority (i am worried about excessive data costs). Second question is: Is there any multi tasking support on the Magic and if so then how do you switch between applications?

How exactly do I set up WiFi work most efficiently on my EVO? Does it know to choose the best option for getting to the internet? (WiFi or 3/4G?)
Here's why I ask: I have an app that syncs info between the internet and the phone. When I can't get a signal, it can't sync. Often I have crappy reception at home, one or two bars only (a whole 'nother thread), but I do have a strong wifi signal.
Being a newbie to all this, in my little world, logic assumes that the phone would automatically switch from 3or4G to wifi for the exchange of data (but not for talking). But I think I don't have it right. Can someone explain it to me? And how to best set up my phone to take advantage of the strongest signal for data exchange?

So, using that I have made my WiFi of PC to Access Point Mode. So, now I am able to connect to PC using that WiFi network. But I am unable to access internet. Can anyone suggest me the way to share my PC internet to my HTC Tattoo to save money when we are at home.

my WiFi on my Evo has been acting up, so I went and restarted modem and router, turned off WiFi on Evo, battery pull Evo, then as a last resort, I updated my router's firmware (since its been over a year since update =/) so I figured maybe that would solve something. Nope, can't even update Twitter, Facebook, get on internet. I did update on 6/28 and everything went smooth and my WiFi was working then. I have done nothing since and then all of a sudden, last night and today WiFi wont work.
I guess to explain this better, I can connect to my router, Evo shows that I'm connected with Good/Excellent connection and 55 mbps, but its like no internet connectivity, Facebook, Twitter, Internet, nothing. Like I've said up until last night everything was working until now. Did the update on 6/28 just slowly kill my WiFi?
