HTC Magic :: Wifi Priority - Multi Tasking To Switch Between Applications?
Jul 22, 2009
Just two quick questions: When connected to wifi, do internet connections made on the device automatically go via wifi as opposed to 3g etc and if not then is there a way to organize which wireless connection 'methods' have higher priority (i am worried about excessive data costs). Second question is: Is there any multi tasking support on the Magic and if so then how do you switch between applications?

Can someone give me a real world, bare bones, idea of how the multitasking on the Incredible (android in general) actually works or what makes it so great? I know that is one of the things people haven't liked about the Iphone, and by default it is seen as a big benefit to android phones. I'm about to get my first smart phone and while I like the idea of multitasking, I'm wondering how many things can I actually run and/or use at one time. As I have thought about it, admittedly I'm not experienced, but I was thinking I could listen to music, while sending a text, or surfing the net, or maybe running some app, but how many things can I really do at once on the phone? Maybe while on a call I can be surfing the net or playing a game or running some app?
If I'm playing a game, won't that take up the whole screen, if I'm using it for navigation, I can't really be texting while it is guiding me, or making a call, I guess I could, but who knows? Hopefully this doesn't sound too stupid of a question, I'm just trying to figure out how I will best utilize my phone when I get it. Maybe the idea is that I don't have to close things out or have them close in order to do something else, and that allows me to go right back to what I was doing before I changed tasks? Any thoughts someone might have on this? Please keep in mind, this isn't a complaint or probing question as to limitations, I'm really just trying to figure out all the cool things I will be able to do with my phone when I get it.

Is there an app for multi-tasking like Palm Pre for Android? Or, is this being developed; coming in future Android versions? Not really that good but it was developed for iPhone and it was a great.

I was just wondering if there's a way to open the task box by a single-touch instead of a long touch? An application maybe?

1- How can i disable multi-tasking? My application is a socket based game, every time i start the app, it MUST load the main page first to start the socket connection? I do not want the user to be able to run my application in background. Is this possible to do? 2- I do not want the user to be able to use the back button, to navigate between pages, users must only use the buttons available in my application to navigate?

Apparently my T-Mobile G2 (HTC Hero) multi-tasks. Why is it then, that I might be playing a game (say Puzzle Attack) and I get a new email notification. I slide down the notification bar, click the email notification, read the notification, go back to Puzzle Attack and it takes me to the main menu. This happens on, I think, every single game I have played. Is there something that the app developers can do to force the app to close instead of simply going to the background? Is it *really* multi-tasking?

I really like to run Dolphin in the background and it runs fine (on Fresh 1.1 with Gumbo Kernel + setcpu) and I have 2-3 tabs open and everything else runs fine. I try not to run too much else (if I do ebuddy it gets slow, so I usually don't), but I was wondering how bad this was to do, and if I could check somehow how bad it was. I don't know a way to tell how draining this is on the battery or how the phone runs, is there any way to check?

I found out today that when I use the headphone output from my Droid, I can feed the Google Maps turn-by-turn through my car speakers using the aux-in on my head unit. I can also play music out of my Droid in the same fashion. I can even do both at the same time! But here's the rub. The Google Map "Voice" is so loud compared to the music out of my Droid that if I have the music playing loud enough to hear. Google Maps blows out my speakers! There doesn't seem to be a volume control on the Google Girl, so I guess this is as much a feature request to be able to mix the Google Girl up a bit over the music.

I'm doing a bit of online copy-writing on the side at the moment, and it would be great if I could use this thing to write a few paragraphs here and there when I'm on the move. How would the HTC Desire handle multi-tasking between a browser and a basic text editor? I won't be looking for any crazy formatting options; don't need to change margins, add pagination or anything. Just a few sites open for researching facts and an application that can handle badly worded sentences with lame jokes thrown in
My contract is due to run out soon and I'm not sure whether I should negotiate one with a free Desire, or get a cheap handset and then buy a netbook. I'm broke at the moment so its a case of either/or!

I am looking for the "perfect" multi-tasking app, or at least the one that I unequivocally like the most. I have seen a few already and really like some, but for one reason or another I am still looking for the best one that suites my needs. Here are some of the ones I have either tried already or am using: Quick Desk : very cool, no real complaints except maybe that I dont think I can kill running apps from the quick bar SmartTaskbar : also cool because it can launch with a swipe from the side of the screen, but the problem is its interface is quite busy and not very functional/intuitive to configure. Also cant kill apps Multitask Manager: nice simple interface (iPhone 4 style) but more or less half the time unresponsive to touches. Also can only launch by singe touch of 'home' button, which isnt very convenient. Visual Task Switcher: Almost perfect. The screen shot idea used in this is really probably the best format for any multitasking app, but unfortunately it overlaps with Quick Desk (which needs to use the same activation key "search+long press") which is a problem because Quick Desk supports widgets... Android Mate: This is probably one of my favorites just because its pretty straightforward and organized, you can kill multiple apps at once, etc. But Again no widgets and no ideal universal one touch activation. Now I luanch it from within SmartTaskbar...
Itching Thumbs: By far the coolest and most (theoretically) capable. If I could get this to be stable on my phone it would be my 1st choice. It does pretty much everything I would like, screen shots, app killing, app launching, widgets, gestures ... Only problem is its still in beta and unfortunately, at least on my phone (Nexus One), keeps freezing and needing to be re-installed. Anyway all these apps have their pluses and I realize that for the most part the things I have trouble with are either due to still being in beta stage or the method of activation overlapping with other functions something which can be adjusted in an update. But what do you all use? Have you found anything that really works for you?

Sitting at home . WiFi in full operation and showing as such on the Desire. If I use my Desire what will it prioritise: My home WiFi connection or the ISP's data connection? Both have strong signals everywhere in the house and both are equally fast. Important to know as don't want any isp billing surprises!

I have 2 Access Points in my house broadcasting 2 different SSIDs, my Droid can connect to both successfully but it likes the one that is farthest away better. Most of the time I have to force connect the one Im sitting next too. Is there a way to set a priority on which AP it connects too?

I am trying to to use WiFi API to set priorities to created profiles. I am using the priority field of WifiConfiguration to set this information. I have found out that no matter what priority I set, Android always tries to re-connect to the latest access point that it was connected to. Here is what I do: 1) I create a profile A with a very low priority (0) 2) I create a profile B with high priority (100) 3) I connect to profile A 4) I turn Wi-Fi off 5) I turn Wi-Fi back on 6) In the scan Android sees both A & B 7) Android connects to A, even though its priority is much lower. Does anyone has a work around for this?

Does anyone know of a way to get your 'All Apps' screen to be a fixed multi page view rather than a scrolling list. When it's a scrolling list, it's hard to find what you are looking for quickly, as you first have to work out where you are on the list, then scroll to the required area of the list and find the app (which is always on a different place on the screen as the list moves (ie sometimes it could be at the top, sometimes at the bottom, somtimes in the middle).
On a fixed multi page view, you only need to work out which page you're on, then the app you are looking for will be in a fixed place on it's page (i.e. always top right spot on page 2). I appreciate that this is not a huge time-saving issue, but it would be helpful for me, and sometimes those few extra seconds why trying to find the 'messaging' app can be a pain in the neck. I downloaded some nice wall papers so at the moment am trying out having very clean homescreens, hence using the 'all apps' a lot more.

OK, here is my dislike about this phone. I switched to the Evo cause my DH was obsessed with getting one. I had a Blackberry for the last 2 years and one of the things I liked about the phone was ie: If I was on a call and needed to get a phone number for someone, I could put the phone on speaker, switch applications and access my address book, find the number and then go back to the phone screen. It also worked with any other application I wanted to view while on the phone. It seems that the Evo is not capable of this function.
Not sure if this was the right thread to post on but figured I'd try it. The other down side to the Evo is not having the cut and paste function. Or, is it that I just don't know how to do this yet.

Can anybody show me how to switch to another Android application programmatically or request focus on a specific application? My situation is that, I have an Activity, and in that activity, I start other UI application by "am" command. When the program runs, it float to top screen, but it don't have focus. I need to focus to that application's screen programmatically for doing some automatic action. How can I do this?

I am trying to figure out how to switch between apps? The expanded manual says to hole the "home" button down from the Home screen. This works to an extent but does not show all apps I have running? For instance I emailed my selt the link to the extended manual from Motorola.
http://www.motorola.com/staticfiles/Support/US-EN/Mobile%20Phones/DROID-by-Motorola/US-EN/Documents/Static-Files/DROID_UG_Verizon_68000202474a.pdf
I click on that link and it downloads the pdf then opens QuickDocs to read it. But if I want to go back to the Home screen for something I can't get back to the Quick Docs app to continue reading from where I left off? I have to go thru the whole process over again and then it tries to download the manual again, so I cancel it and click on the previous one downloaded listed above the download. Then it opens QuickDocs again , but I then have to scroll thru all the pages I read to get to the page I left off at. What gives? It is time consuming and annoying!

I have noticed (since getting a Task Manager) that apps that I run do not all seem to quit when I exit. For example, I load up an application, and then finish by using the back key, which takes me back to the 'desktop'.
When I then load up task manager I find that the app is usually still listed. Also I will usually find setting and a number of other apps listed. nb. These are Apps and not services.
As a new Magic user I wonder if I am doing something wrong or maybe not closing apps correctly. Some have an 'exit' entry in the context menu, but many others do not, and for these maybe I am not correctly closing them when I think I have by using the back key.
Also, does the Magic multi-task. Is there a way to switch between running applications?
All this seems that it should be obvious, but even after downloading the full user guide pdf, I am still no wiser on the subject.
Finally, is it true that to use the alarm clock I have to leave the phone powered up? My old Nokias used an alarm that worked when the phone was powered off, and even gave the option to turn the phpne on when the alarm went off. I assume this isn't possible with Android/Magic?

I am very new to Android environment and I have tried to figure something out for the past few days. If you press and hold Home button, it will list 6 last applications that were started, and that is fine... what is not fine, is that after checking it out I noticed that all of the 6 applications listed there are continually running in the background. Is there a way to actually shut down an application, not just put it in the background or is that an unavoidable part of the Android? So to put it simply, how to I close an application once I ran it and have finished using it? I also noticed that depending on how many and which applications are running in the background my battery life is impacted severely.

I've noticed since I have updated to firmware 1.5 on my HTC Magic that I've been losing all types of audio intermittently.Example: I would be watching video on my Magic then the audio would suddenly cut out. This includes all types of notifications, alarms or ringtones. This is very disturbing cause it makes my phone very unreliable.I miss calls and messages and one time or another I overslept cause the alarm went off but there was no audio.I know its not a hardware issue cause once I reboot everything is normal again. I don't like rebooting all the time to fix this problem and worse you dont realize that you lost audio notifications until you do check your phone to discover you did.I've read on google forums of several other accounts of this but so far no solid solution.

I'm doing a research on Cellular-WiFi switch and finding any mechanism to handle cellular hand off.As far as i've found,an http request is routed through WiFi network if connected even gprs/cellular connection is present.
My queries are:
1)Does this switch happens automatically ? If yes, which part of framework or code does that?
2)Does the http request drop in such situation due to cellular hand off ? Is there any way to handle such hand off ?
3)Does gprs cellular connection reconnects automatically when WiFi gets disconnected ?
4)Which type of alerts or notifications normally user gets in such situations ?
Yours feedback and inputs will be of great help for me in this activity.

I got my HTC magic yesterday when i was away from home, I home earlier today and thought i would get the phone setup on my wireless, the phone detects every other network in my area except mine. I am currently writing this on my laptop via the wireless connection and it is detected by another pc wirelessly and my old N95 8Gb, its not out of signal as i have tried it almost sat on the router. I have checked through the routers setup and cannot see any settings that are wrong or would effect this.

If anybody is creating multi-touch apps for Android, you may have noticed the MotionEvent class is getting more and more complicated over time. Additionally you may have discovered your code has different quirky behavior on different devices (e.g. on Synaptics devices, touch-down / touch-up can cause sudden jumps in pointer position before the down/up event is received).
I have written a class to simplify the process of writing multi-touch applications for Android, and just updated it to Android 2.2 (and to handle 3+ touch points on true 2D multi-touch sensors, as present on the HTC Incredible and HTC EVO 4G), and moved the project to Google Code hosting:
http://code.google.com/p/android-multitouch-controller/
There are numerous advantages to using this controller over trying to reinvent the wheel yourself, including simplicity and automatic device- space / object-space coordinate conversion for pinch-zoom. This also correctly centers the zoom of a pinch operation on the center of the pinch rather than the center of the screen, and supports simultaneous pinch-and-drag for more realistic pinching.
