HTC Incredible :: How To Install Recent Maintenance Update?

Nov 19, 2010

For some reason I can't seem to install the recent maintenance update. I've been notified three times, but each time I try to install it either hangs at the rebooting screen (before shutdown, not during) or says your phone will reboot, but doesn't and the screen just goes away.

Samsung Vibrant : Samsung Vibrant System Update / Released OTA Discussion

Sep 24, 2010

Ok, so I may be leaving the USA soon. I plan on unlocking my phone and going out of the country with it. I don't know how long I may be gone.maybe years, so here are a few questions.

1. I plan on going South Africa. According to this site, both the phone and 3g should work perfectly right? GSM World Coverage Map- GSM Country List by frequency bands

2. I have seen an app to unlock the Vibrant. It is by DaGentooBoy from XDA. Its called Samsung Galxy S Unlock. Would it be better for me to use this app or to just request T-Mobile to give me the unlock code. Are there any pros or cons for using either method.

3. If the OTA update or Froyo don't come out before I am gone, will I be able to get an OTA over wifi while I am in South Africa. Just to clarify, I will be using a local sim over there. I will discontinue from tmobile when I leave the US I know nothing of rooting. This is my first smartphone, so if possible I would be hesitant of doing any updates via the computer that requires me to loose all my info. I have too many apps and saved games and settings to download again so its just a scary thought of loosing it all.

4. Will google navigation work overseas. I have heard people say yes and no. I am hesitant to buy apps like co-pilot as they cost a lot and have mixed reviews, so I wanted to find out about this.

HTC Incredible :: Official "Can Someone Please Get Us An Update.zip" Thread?

Aug 28, 2010

For the people who don't know, it takes 2 seconds (approximately) to help out thousands of people and become an AndroidForums celebrity! There are thousands (if not hundreds of thousands) of people waiting for the Update.zip so they can manually update and finally end their longtime wait for Froyo.But the problem is everyone is seeing the notification and going "Oh hey, wow...yeah! Froyo!" and proceeds to install! And by you doing this, you get Froyo and everyone else is still stuck in a giant circle jerk, waiting for some generous person to share the update. So here's what you do. When the update pops up on your phone. Go into Astro File Manager (if you don't have it, download it from the Market) and go into the SDcard file system. You will see a file called "Update.zip" long press on it, select edit, copy, and then paste a copy of it in a folder of your choice on your SDcard. Later, hook your phone up to your computer and go into the file system, and get that Update.zip file out of that file that you chose and upload it to any file hosting site. Megauploads, rapidshare, even Google Docs would suffice. But a lot of people are waiting for this update! If you don't want to go through the steps to upload it to a file share website, private message me, I will give u my e-mail, u can e-mail it to me, and I will upload it to a file sharing site.

Samsung Captivate :: Maintenance

Oct 6, 2010

I am madly in love with my captivate like some of you may know, but it has kinda hit me today that having to kill so many tasks that frequently seems a bit much and it makes me wonder if

A:I am doing something wrong or closing the apps that I run wrong,

B: there is some maintenance involved with these phones? Maybe not defragging, but the same ideas...do they get cluttered and slow? Should there be so much available space on your internal sd? etc etc... or

C: The phone is built to handle what I can throw at it...or maybe even a "D:" i don't even know about?

Let's hear your speculation about what you think is coming with the EVO - be it release dates, final specs, what it'll ship with (Prince of Persia?),I'm guessing it'll come with an 8GB card, wall charger...and that's about it. The Incredible shipped sans-headphones, so I'm fearing the same will be true for the EVO.

Android :: Paid Applications - Discussion List?

Feb 21, 2009

Is there a dedicated list for developers who have paid apps in Android Market? It would be best if that list has at least 1 *Google* (not Android, i.e. I don't need it to be technically savvy) employee able to give sensible answers to WTF questions related to the Market and paid apps?

Android :: Why Does Not This Discussion List Function Properly?

Jul 14, 2010

A little off topic, but it is about Android phones and this discussion list, so here goes. If you receive emails from this list in digest form and try to read the email on your Android phone (or at least on the Nexus One, the only phone I have experience with), when you click on any of the topics listed at the top of the email, you get an "Unauthorized: Error 401" error. If you read the email on your PC and click any of the links, it takes you to the topic you clicked, as expected. I know that this isn't a developer issue but I am not sure what other group to post it to.

Android :: Polite Discussion Of Lite / Trial Vs Pro Distribution

Mar 19, 2009

First I will explain my situation.Then, I would greatly appreciate constructive dialog on how other developers feel similar situations should be managed.I wrote a simple app in November.I offered it for free on the Market for two reasons.One, Google hadn't implemented paid apps yet, so I had no choice.Two, by my own admission, v1.0 was too simple too garner payment.However, in the app's documentation, I requested donations toward future development.Out of thousands of installs, I received nothing.This week I finished a considerably fancier version of the program. Given hundreds of hours of unpaid development, I decided to charge a few bucks for the new version.I split the app into lite and pro versions.The lite version has all the new fancy features enabled but is limited in how large a document can be created (spread sheet, I limited the number of rows/cols, admittedly unlimited in the earlier version). The pro version went to Market as a new app, the lite version on top of the old app to retain the long feedback history.

Since the Market provides no way to downgrade, I put the old unlimited version on my website and put directions in the new lite version in multiple places explaining how to revert to the old version.Thus, any user dissatisfied with the rol/col limit could restore the EXACT functionality they had before upgrading to the lite version.Incidentally, the 325 character blurb allotted on the Market was insufficient to list the new features and the lite version's limitation and the caveat that the lite version could be reverted through my website.I simply could not communicate these facts to users to help them decide whether to upgrade or what to expect after upgrading.

The complaints about the new lite version have been diverse.Most pertinent to this discussion are complaints that the lite version now limits the rows/cols where the previous version didn't.I find such complaints unjustifiable since I explicitly permit reversion.I literally don't see what they have to complain about. Another irksome genre of complaints is that the program is still too simple to ask any money for at all. I am infuriated. It costs less than an ice cream cone.So, as discussion, how would other developers handle this situation: initial app is simple so offered for free,later version is complex so split into lite/pro. You don't want to limit the lite version by not showing the new fancy features, so the limitation must be something else, a time limit, a forced delay splash screen, something.I chose limited rows/cols on a spreadsheet app, but also permitted reversion to the old unlimited version.

Android :: Update UI From An Event With Thread

Mar 26, 2010

Im working on a small application to try out an idea that I have. The idea is to periodically update the UI when event of some sort occurs. In the demo I've created, I'm updating a ProgressDialog every 2 seconds for 15 turns. The problem I am having, which I don't quite understand is that when an event is handled, I send a message to the handler which is supposed to update the message in the ProgressDialog. When this happens however, I get an exception which states that I can't update the UI from that thread.Am I missing something? The logic makes sense to me and it looks like everything should work, I'm using a handler to update the UI like it is recommended.

Android :: Update Text When Dialog Open And Dismissed In Thread

Aug 18, 2010

Look at my code.
- code -
private Handler handler = new Handler(); private ProgressDialog dialog;
final Runnable runInUIThread = new Runnable() { public void run() { dialog.dismiss();
} };
private void DoThis() {
dialog = new ProgressDialog(Main.this); dialog.setTitle("Title");
dialog.setMessage("Text"); dialog.show();
Thread newTask = new Thread() {
@Override public void run() { Looper.prepare(); DoThat();
handler.post(runInUIThread); Looper.loop();
); newTask.start(); } }

Is it possible to use test.setText("something") in this thread to update a Button text or TextView in the LinearLayout after the dialog is dismissed? I try cheating placing:
test.setVisibility(View.INVISIBLE);
test.setText("something");
test.setVisibility(View.VISIBLE);
after dialog.show();
It kind of updated the text when the dialog open. I want to do it after the dialog was dismissed. What is the correct way to implement this in my thread?
