Android :: Update Listview After Thread Loaded Data From The Net
Mar 16, 2009
I like that my GUI appears immediatly when the User starts the APP. Than some Data (text, Pictures) come loaded in the Background (like Youtube APP) The Listview and Gallery comes updated automaticly with this new Data.
I initiate my Listview, start a Thread and load the Data....and than the Listview does not come updated!!
Several People write I should use notifyDataSetChanged(). But I can not place this Command in my Thread (just unknown).

I have a separate thread running to get data from the internet. After that, I would like to update the ListView in the main thread by calling adapter.notifyDataSetChanged(). But it does not work. Any workaround for that?

I have an extended BaseAdapter in a ListActivity: private static class RequestAdapter extends BaseAdapter{ and some handlers and runnables defined in it
CODE:.......
In the getView function of the Adapter, I'm getting the view like this:
CODE:..........
and the image is getting loaded this way:
CODE:.................
Now, the problem I'm having is that if there are more items that need to display the same picture, not all of those pictures get displayed. When you scroll up and down the list maybe you end up filling all of them.
When I tried the commented out line (holder.avatar.setImageBitmap...) the app sometimes force closes with "only the thread that created the view can request...". But only sometimes.

I populate a ListView from the result of a Sqlite query; one of the fields is the image file name that i would like to show as image into a listview.
How can i do to show the image file?
I use
SimpleCursorAdapter(this, R.layout.list_name,cur,new String[] {"fields_list"}, new int[] { R.id.list...});

I've spent the last 2 hours listening to a mix of mp3's that were either pre-loaded onto my sd card and that I've added to it myself (40-60 split) and I've noticed on 3G watchdog that my usage has shot up 40% odd!Why has this happened when I'm listening to stuff from my sd card?I have installed the last.fm app for what it's worth, is it doing soemthing it shouldn't be? I've had a look in my task manager and there is nothing obvious running that shouldn't be, if that makes sense.

After update - can SPRecovery be loaded and run to return to a custom ROM? I apologize if this is a dumb question, but as i am at work right now - I can't try it. Not sure if you need root access for SPRecovery, or if there is another way to do it.

In Handler, we can pass some data from a background thread to the UI thread like this:
private void someBackgroundThreadOperation() {
final String data = "hello";
handler.post(new Runnable() {
public void run() {
Log.d(TAG, "Message from bg thread: " + data);
}
}
}
If we use the above, we cannot then use Handler.removeCallbacks(Runnable r), because we won't have references to any of the anonymous runnables we created above. We could create a single Runnable instance, and post that to the handler, but it won't allow us to pass any data through:.............

I am want to pass data back from a Thread to Activity (which created the thread). So I am doing like described on Android documentation.Only one thing I am missing here - where and how should be defined mResults so I could access it from both Activity and Thread, and also would be able to modify as needed? If I define it as final in MyActivity, I can't change it anymore in Thread - as it is shown in example.

I'm doing an application that requires that certain thread access data that's shared among it and another service.How can I protect these shared data form accessing in the same time is there anything in android for that or android has nothing to do with this as Java API's will do the job.

Im working on a small application to try out an idea that I have. The idea is to periodically update the UI when event of some sort occurs. In the demo I've created, I'm updating a ProgressDialog every 2 seconds for 15 turns. The problem I am having, which I don't quite understand is that when an event is handled, I send a message to the handler which is supposed to update the message in the ProgressDialog. When this happens however, I get an exception which states that I can't update the UI from that thread.Am I missing something? The logic makes sense to me and it looks like everything should work, I'm using a handler to update the UI like it is recommended.

I've posted this in a couple of places without any help so hopefully this group has some helpful people :) I have an AutoCompleteTextView which I want to populate with artist names based on what the user types.The problem is that I have a thread for retrieving the names from a web service, but when I try and update the ArrayAdapter with a Handler on the UI thread (which is called from the web service thread), nothing gets updated on screen. When I type another letter though, then the previous results from web service are displayed in the autocompletetextview rather than the latest.

I have a main class activity that does the task of sending control to other activities on click of a button. I am also starting a thread in the main class. This thread basically sets up a connection with the server and is active throughout the lifetime of the application.I have two functions in the thread class, send and receive data from server.Therefore, when the other activities need to send/receive data from server, they use those particular functions.First of all please let me know if what I am trying to do is fine as per the architecture of the operating system. If its fine, when I try to run the code, the app crashes and i see a NullPointerException and a RuntimeException in the DDMS log.Could some one please help me out in this or suggest a better way to implement the concept.Also, please be assured that, the other functionality of the code works perfectly fine.

I am seeing some weird issues and looking to see if anyone knows what is going on. I have a BroadcastReceiver which updates some views on receiving an event. Some psudo code is shown below. What happens is the function runs fine and the app seems to update the textviews BUT when i then try to clear the textviews parent and add new textviews the linearlayout(parent) blanks out and will now draw any of it's children.

I'm trying to learn AsyncTask and Thread but Thread first. I am trying to display a Dialog before "DoSomeTask()" but seems like the Dialog always come after DoSomeTask(). Did I do something wrong here?
--- code---
@Override public void onClick(View v) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub mainProcessing();
DoSomeTask(); } private void mainProcessing() {
Thread thread = new Thread(null, doBackgroundThreadProcessing, "Background");
thread.start(); }
private Runnable doBackgroundThreadProcessing = new Runnable() {
public void run() { backgroundThreadProcessing();
} };
private void backgroundThreadProcessing() {
handler.post(doUpdateGUI);
} private Runnable doUpdateGUI = new Runnable() {
public void run() { updateGUI();
} };
private void updateGUI() {
final ProgressDialog dialog = new ProgressDialog(CloseVault.this);
dialog.setMessage("Please wait...");
dialog.show();
}

Curious to know the reason behind not allowing updating UI elements from background thread in Android. Will main thread does something more (probably interacting with framework) after updating the UI elements so that changes can be seen on the screen? Is it the same case with other GUI tool kits?

My purpose is very simple : each 1second, I want to redraw an object on different place on background. I do not know where my error on this code below. Here is my code:
public class My_View extends View{ private Bitmap mBackground_img;
private Drawable mMoveObject; private int mObjectw,mObjecth; private int Dx,Dy;
private Handler myHandler = new Handler(); private long lasttime;
public My_View(Context context,AttributeSet ats,int ds) {
super(context,ats,ds); init(context);
} public My_View(Context context,AttributeSet ats) { super(context,ats);
init(context); } public My_View(Context context) { super(context);
init(context); } public void change() { invalidate();
} private void init(Context context) {
Resources res = context.getResources();
mMoveObject = res.getDrawable (R.drawable.lander_firing);
mBackground_img = BitmapFactory.decodeResource(res, R.drawable.my_pic);
mObjectw = mMoveObject.getIntrinsicWidth();
mObjecth = mMoveObject.getIntrinsicHeight();
Dx = Dy = 0; lasttime = System.currentTimeMillis() + 1000;
Thread mthread = new Thread(null,doBackground,"Background");
mthread.start(); } private Runnable doBackground = new Runnable() {
public void run() { long now = System.currentTimeMillis();
if(lasttime < now ) { Dx = Dx + 10; Dy = Dy + 10;
lasttime = now + 1000; myHandler.post(change_view);
} } }; private Runnable change_view = new Runnable() {
public void run() { change();
} };
@Override public void onDraw(Canvas canvas) {
canvas.drawBitmap(mBackground_img,0 ,0 , null);
mMoveObject.setBounds(Dx, Dy, Dx+mObjectw, Dy+mObjecth);
mMoveObject.draw(canvas);
} }

Look at my code.
- code -
private Handler handler = new Handler(); private ProgressDialog dialog;
final Runnable runInUIThread = new Runnable() { public void run() { dialog.dismiss();
} };
private void DoThis() {
dialog = new ProgressDialog(Main.this); dialog.setTitle("Title");
dialog.setMessage("Text"); dialog.show();
Thread newTask = new Thread() {
@Override public void run() { Looper.prepare(); DoThat();
handler.post(runInUIThread); Looper.loop();
); newTask.start(); } }
Is it possible to use test.setText("something") in this thread to update a Button text or TextView in the LinearLayout after the dialog is dismissed? I try cheating placing:
test.setVisibility(View.INVISIBLE);
test.setText("something");
test.setVisibility(View.VISIBLE);
after dialog.show();
It kind of updated the text when the dialog open. I want to do it after the dialog was dismissed. What is the correct way to implement this in my thread?
