Android :: Update View On Worker Thread

Aug 28, 2009

I am seeing some weird issues and looking to see if anyone knows what is going on. I have a BroadcastReceiver which updates some views on receiving an event. Some psudo code is shown below. What happens is the function runs fine and the app seems to update the textviews BUT when i then try to clear the textviews parent and add new textviews the linearlayout(parent) blanks out and will now draw any of it's children.

Android :: Posting Toast From Worker To UI Thread

Aug 8, 2010

I was trying to post a toast notification in case something goes wrong in a worker thread. I do this by putting a handler.post(funcFailed) in the catch block where funcFailed it a runnable and simply called a function funcFailedshow()

funcFailedshow() is defined to be Toast.makeText(App.this,"Error in funcfailed", Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();

For some reason i cannot see the toast notification. Even if i replace App.this (app is the applications name) with a getApplicationContext() it does not work.

Android :: Properly Pass MotionEvent To A Worker Thread?

Jul 20, 2009

My app forwards MotionEvents, reported by GestureDetector.OnGestureListener, to a worker thread. Right now i am doing it by calling MotionEvent.obtain, pass the obtained copy to the worker thread, handle it and recycle it at the worker thread. Is it required to obtain and recycle a MotionEvent if it is passed to another thread? Or could it safely be skiped? If i am making things overly complicated, could you please explain me at which conditions MotionEvent.obtain is usually called?

Android :: Implementation Of OnDestroy For Service Containing Worker Or Backround Thread

May 26, 2009

I'm implementing a service that contains a thread to handle all time consuming operation. My core service logic is in a different thread than the ui or main thread. According to the Android document, when the OS plans to free some system resource, it will call onDestroy () on the service and only when onDestroy() returns it will kill the process hosting the service, thus giving opportunity to the service to cleanup.Now, when onDestroy() is called, I want to send a message to my service thread to do the necessary cleanup. Only when the service thread acknowledges that the cleanup or shutdown is complete, onDestroy () should return. I could find a way to send asynchronous messages to threads and the corresponding processing of the messages, but not able to figure out how I need to implement onDestroy(), such that it would send a message to the service thread and should wait for a result, before returning.

Android :: Update View Only From Application Main Thread

Oct 19, 2010

Curious to know the reason behind not allowing updating UI elements from background thread in Android. Will main thread does something more (probably interacting with framework) after updating the UI elements so that changes can be seen on the screen? Is it the same case with other GUI tool kits?

Android :: Possible To Start Surface View With Game Thread

Aug 7, 2010

I've read several example programs and tutorials to try and solve my problem but they all seem to go the same way. I've used a couple Activities and xml documents to create a menu that loads when my game starts.When the user clicks the "Start The Game" button, it loads a new Activity that sets the view with my game thread and all of the game properties.I know this activity works because I've run it alone as its own project, but every way I've tried to start it after the Menu,I get a nullPointerException and it force closes.I read the SurfaceViewOverlay tutorial and attempted to use that implementation, but I'm using a SurfaceView, not a GLSurfaceView.I'm debating rewriting my entire program to use OpenGL but I figured I would see if anyone else knows what I'm doing wrong here.If you need the code snippets I can paste some here, but it's not really the specific code that's wrong.

Android :: Update UI From An Event With Thread

Mar 26, 2010

Im working on a small application to try out an idea that I have. The idea is to periodically update the UI when event of some sort occurs. In the demo I've created, I'm updating a ProgressDialog every 2 seconds for 15 turns. The problem I am having, which I don't quite understand is that when an event is handled, I send a message to the handler which is supposed to update the message in the ProgressDialog. When this happens however, I get an exception which states that I can't update the UI from that thread.Am I missing something? The logic makes sense to me and it looks like everything should work, I'm using a handler to update the UI like it is recommended.

Android :: AutoCompleteTextView Update From Thread

I've posted this in a couple of places without any help so hopefully this group has some helpful people :) I have an AutoCompleteTextView which I want to populate with artist names based on what the user types.The problem is that I have a thread for retrieving the names from a web service, but when I try and update the ArrayAdapter with a Handler on the UI thread (which is called from the web service thread), nothing gets updated on screen. When I type another letter though, then the previous results from web service are displayed in the autocompletetextview rather than the latest.

Android :: Android's Listview - Update View Within Of Cells Just After Invalidating Activity's View

Android :: Update Text When Dialog Open And Dismissed In Thread

Aug 18, 2010

Look at my code.
- code -
private Handler handler = new Handler(); private ProgressDialog dialog;
final Runnable runInUIThread = new Runnable() { public void run() { dialog.dismiss();
} };
private void DoThis() {
dialog = new ProgressDialog(Main.this); dialog.setTitle("Title");
dialog.setMessage("Text"); dialog.show();
Thread newTask = new Thread() {
@Override public void run() { Looper.prepare(); DoThat();
handler.post(runInUIThread); Looper.loop();
); newTask.start(); } }

Is it possible to use test.setText("something") in this thread to update a Button text or TextView in the LinearLayout after the dialog is dismissed? I try cheating placing:
test.setVisibility(View.INVISIBLE);
test.setText("something");
test.setVisibility(View.VISIBLE);
after dialog.show();
It kind of updated the text when the dialog open. I want to do it after the dialog was dismissed. What is the correct way to implement this in my thread?
