HTC EVO 4G :: Mindless Discussion & Speculation
May 2, 2010
Let's hear your speculation about what you think is coming with the EVO - be it release dates, final specs, what it'll ship with (Prince of Persia?),I'm guessing it'll come with an 8GB card, wall charger...and that's about it. The Incredible shipped sans-headphones, so I'm fearing the same will be true for the EVO.

we have an estimated time frame on when HTC should be done with Froyo to have it released to the carriers.Android 2.2 Froyo Update: HTC Release Date Plans in 2010 : Product Reviews Net This thread is a little different though. There are several broad time frames out there in various articles. The consensus on what HTC said seems to be that they will be done in the second half of 2010 no earlier than July 1st.Here is my guess and let's all hope I am way off base.If HTC decides to use the same exact version of Sense they could be done by July 1st.I doubt they will do that because HTC loves being innovative with their software. With an update as big as Froyo should be I think there will be some big changes/additions to Sense UI. So with that said let's say HTC finishes in August.
Now it is Sprint's turn. I think they will drag their feet just like any other device update.First I believe they are going to really want to get rid of the biggest Froyo addition that they will likely see as a disadvantage, Free WIFI Tethering. On top of that I don't believe there will be many people complaining about an OS update. I think we make up a small percentage of the people that will actually buy the EVO. And half of us will just flash custom roms, so I doubt they will feel they need to rush to get an update out for us to use.

With all this talk about the Incredible coming to Verizon in April or May, I've been thinking about replacing my Droid Eris already... The phone is too slow for me, and the leaked 2.1 ROM I put on it is very buggy.I assume the Incredible will cost 200.00 for most people, but since I'll be buying it outright, as in no 2-year renewal or "new every two", how much can I expect to pay for this phone?

I have many devices, Archos 5, Gmini 402, Ngage, Dash, G1, Moto Droid (for two weeks), N900, Zen 32gb, Dingoo, DS, M11X and other devices (too many- I admit). The one common thing with all of these devices is they use basically the same battery technology. What do some folks expect out of a 1300mah battery having to do all this:
1. 3.7" hi res screen
2. Mulit-tasking in OS
3. Social apps
4. 3G
5. Wifi
6. GPS
7. Flash vids
8. Games
9. Audio & video decoding
10. 1ghz snapdragon
The device needs a bigger battery, or access to the chipset, so people use an app like SetCPU to set profiles for more relative dynamic clocking (for how user, uses the device).Perhaps rooting the device just for SetCPU would be worth the effort to to root? Maybe so.

Is there a dedicated list for developers who have paid apps in Android Market? It would be best if that list has at least 1 *Google* (not Android, i.e. I don't need it to be technically savvy) employee able to give sensible answers to WTF questions related to the Market and paid apps?

A little off topic, but it is about Android phones and this discussion list, so here goes. If you receive emails from this list in digest form and try to read the email on your Android phone (or at least on the Nexus One, the only phone I have experience with), when you click on any of the topics listed at the top of the email, you get an "Unauthorized: Error 401" error. If you read the email on your PC and click any of the links, it takes you to the topic you clicked, as expected. I know that this isn't a developer issue but I am not sure what other group to post it to.

First I will explain my situation. Then, I would greatly appreciate constructive dialog on how other developers feel similar situations should be managed.I wrote a simple app in November.I offered it for free on the Market for two reasons. One, Google hadn't implemented paid apps yet, so I had no choice. Two, by my own admission, v1.0 was too simple too garner payment. However, in the app's documentation, I requested donations toward future development.Out of thousands of installs, I received nothing. This week I finished a considerably fancier version of the program. Given hundreds of hours of unpaid development, I decided to charge a few bucks for the new version.I split the app into lite and pro versions. The lite version has all the new fancy features enabled but is limited in how large a document can be created (spread sheet, I limited the number of rows/cols, admittedly unlimited in the earlier version). The pro version went to Market as a new app, the lite version on top of the old app to retain the long feedback history.
Since the Market provides no way to downgrade, I put the old unlimited version on my website and put directions in the new lite version in multiple places explaining how to revert to the old version. Thus, any user dissatisfied with the rol/col limit could restore the EXACT functionality they had before upgrading to the lite version.Incidentally, the 325 character blurb allotted on the Market was insufficient to list the new features and the lite version's limitation and the caveat that the lite version could be reverted through my website.I simply could not communicate these facts to users to help them decide whether to upgrade or what to expect after upgrading.
The complaints about the new lite version have been diverse. Most pertinent to this discussion are complaints that the lite version now limits the rows/cols where the previous version didn't.I find such complaints unjustifiable since I explicitly permit reversion.I literally don't see what they have to complain about. Another irksome genre of complaints is that the program is still too simple to ask any money for at all. I am infuriated. It costs less than an ice cream cone. So, as discussion, how would other developers handle this situation: initial app is simple so offered for free, later version is complex so split into lite/pro. You don't want to limit the lite version by not showing the new fancy features, so the limitation must be something else, a time limit, a forced delay splash screen, something.I chose limited rows/cols on a spreadsheet app, but also permitted reversion to the old unlimited version.

Ok, so I may be leaving the USA soon. I plan on unlocking my phone and going out of the country with it. I don't know how long I may be gone.maybe years, so here are a few questions.
1. I plan on going South Africa. According to this site, both the phone and 3g should work perfectly right? GSM World Coverage Map- GSM Country List by frequency bands
2. I have seen an app to unlock the Vibrant. It is by DaGentooBoy from XDA. Its called Samsung Galxy S Unlock. Would it be better for me to use this app or to just request T-Mobile to give me the unlock code. Are there any pros or cons for using either method.
3. If the OTA update or Froyo don't come out before I am gone, will I be able to get an OTA over wifi while I am in South Africa. Just to clarify, I will be using a local sim over there. I will discontinue from tmobile when I leave the US I know nothing of rooting. This is my first smartphone, so if possible I would be hesitant of doing any updates via the computer that requires me to loose all my info. I have too many apps and saved games and settings to download again so its just a scary thought of loosing it all.
4. Will google navigation work overseas. I have heard people say yes and no. I am hesitant to buy apps like co-pilot as they cost a lot and have mixed reviews, so I wanted to find out about this.
