HTC Incredible :: Camera Quality
Aug 17, 2010
I love my HTC Incredible, but I've compared my Incredible to my friend's Incredible. The camera quality is TOTALLY different. We set both phones on the same setting. His picture is crisp and can take detail quality picture without any flickering or noise problem, but mine totally craps out.

This was taken with no changes to the setting - right out the box. (Note: Tons of sarcasm in the title)

I'm not sure how to explain this. If I take a picture with my camera, it looks great on my phone. Colors are deep and full and the sharpness is fine. However, when I mail it to myself or try to access it from my computer, the colors look washed out and flat. It's not really a blown highlight problem and I'm shooting at 8MP. Here's an example:

I'd really like to fix this.

I'll keep this one short - I just want to know if anyone has tried some of the available camera apps, and actually noticed better Incredible photos with less noise, brighter indoor photos without flash, color rendering, or better focus. If you could explain any theoreticals on how software interacts with the hardware to produce such improvements, that would be appreciated too.

Quality of their Front Facing Camera? I recently received a refurb from Sprint and noticed that my pics come out like this... The back camera is perfect, just the front looks like this.

For those who don't know yet. The desires back cover has a camera lens protector made by very cheap plastic, that scratches very easily. When this happens, the pictures will have a "glowing", blurry, un sharp look. What I did was removing the piece of transparent plastic "lens protector" on the back cover and then used a small piece of screen protector and sticked it on the lenses. Even without it the chances you actually scratch the lens is virtually none. So now I have a hole in my back cover, but I dramatically improved my picture and video quality.

I remarked to my wife that the video shot with my new EVO looked like home movies from when we were kids. I then saw that the EVO shoots at 24 fps which explains the home movie video look. Will/can the Froyo update improve the video and or camera quality? It's not a deal breaker but when you have kids it's nice to have a video camera with you at all times. I've got 3 more weeks left on my 30 day trial period. I know the i Phone 4 will shoot at 30 fps and the test images I've seen are considerably better than my EVO.

Anyone else noticed a degradation in the camera quality? After I bought the HTC desire a month ago, I took a few photos in sunny midday daylight with default settings which looked beautiful, probably the best camera phone quality Ive ever seen. But over the course of a month I've noticed an overall desaturation and overly bright photos taken in the same lighting conditions as the originals. In fact, scrolling through the camera shots folder, you can see the quality diminishing as you scroll towards more recent pics.

What do you all think of the quality of the pictures on your DX's? No need to post pictures..... just want your opinions. Maybe rate 1 - 10 with 10 being best. I hated the pictures I took on my Droid 1. The quality was poor at best. Especially inside. I've taken a few with the DX using Vignette and they are pretty good.

I thought something was wrong with my specific phone. But, once I spoke to some buddies they explained they were having same issues. Inside, and night photos are horrible. Outside shots with no movement are ok. 5 Megapixels,, quality seems more like 2 megapixels.

I'm using the default camera API of Android 1.6 like this:
Intent photoIntent = new Intent(MediaStore.ACTION_IMAGE_CAPTURE); photoIntent.putExtra(MediaStore.EXTRA_OUTPUT, Uri.fromFile(new File (Environment.getExternalStorageDirectory(), "test.jpg"))); startActivityForResult(photoPickerIntent, 1);
But the image is saved on very low resolution 512 x 348. I added the QUALITY property but it doesn't make sence: photoPickerIntent.putExtra(MediaStore.EXTRA_VIDEO_QUALITY, 1); There are many more posts on the internet talking about this issue but there's no solution (jet). Is it solved on 2.0??? I realy need the high resolution image (3MP).

I've been using this phone since June, and the camera quality always is something that I hope can be improved on HTC Desire. Previously, I shared a photo to my friend, and he told me that I use a 4MP camera. I was shocked, because it should be 5MP. He's using a photo viewing software that can display photo details. Anyway, I had a look in the camera's setting, resolution 5MP (2592 X 1552). I curiously multiply two numbers, 2592 X 1552 = 4022784 which is 4MP.

I am hard to impress and this device really impresses me. No bugs or issues yet that I haven't been able to fix. Camera works great. Screen is beautiful. Everything is solid. Call quality is great. Signal is rock solid (better, in fact, than my old LG, which was itself good). GPS is crazy accurate (can tell which couch I'm sitting on within the same room).
Motorola, Google, and Verizon is a team that's hard to match if the owner is ready to invest the time in setting up the device properly.

Is it possible that someone could create an App for the Camera to improve picture quality? Is it even possible to improve things like Shutter speed, blurriness, grain in picture and ISO through an App?

I've been rooted for a long time and I've always remembered terrible photos, I mean absolutely terrible with this phone and I've been fine with it. A couple days ago my cousin and I finally got to sit down and root his phone, he was at 2.1 and I now have him at 2.2 with BB. Yesterday he asked me about the camera quality diminishing and if it was a common effect of rooting and I didn't believe it was. So anyway, does anyone have any experience with the camera losing quality after root? Like I was saying, I've always thought mine was shitty and I just lived with it.

I'm quite pleased with the camera as long as you have good light - good amount of detail and sharpness for a camera phone. But I do find that the images are often too dark and lacking in saturation, while being too contrasty. Thankfully, there is plenty of info in the camera image files that can be pulled out. There are some sample comparisons on DPNow.com here if you are interested: HTC Desire smartphone camera still photo quality? - DPNow.com Discussion Forum.

How is the Build Quality? Call Quality? I had problems with the N1 and low Call Quality. Camera/Flash Quality? How is it with 2.2? Very Fast? You think it will get above 2.3? (even by custom roms?)Music/Sound Quality? Loudness? You can change the LED light? Like on the X10 and N1 (trackball) to red, blue, purple, green, blue etc? If you have used the N1, which do you like better? And why?

I am extremely happy with my DX. My only complaint is the quality of the camera in low light. Every picture I take looks grainy. At times the flash washes everything out. I know it's just a camera and I shouldn't expect much, but for such a great device that does everything else, it's a bit of a bummer. I've been looking at low light photos from the SF and they appear to be worlds apart. Does anyone have any hints to get decent looking photos in low light?

Codes to enter the programming menu can be found here: How to Increase Droid X Call Quality? Relevant EVRC-B settings are under NAM CDMA Settings on the Incredible. I myself am not experiencing the call quality issue, so I can't vouch for the results. Link above indicates it may cause extra drain on battery. I used this same code years ago on a Samsung "dumb" phone and it did wonders for call quality and I did not notice a difference in battery life.

I just got my incredible in the mail to replace my droid and i'm hoping that i just have a lemon here. anyone that is coming from a droid, do you notice a huge drop in quality in the screen resolution vs the droid? yeah, the incredible's screen is brighter, but the screen is so heavily pixelated compared to my old droid. it's a big shame because i absolutely love the phone but the websites are almost unbearable to read.

So I spent the last hour or more in my backyard in 107 degrees taking pictures of flowers at stock settings with both phones. NOT an easy task I will tell you that. My back hurts, but besides that... I did my best to show the best quality of BOTH cameras, because they are both great. I realize that not everyone will agree with me, or will think I messed with something in my pictures. But these are all completely stock settings, not messed with at all. I only touched the flash on/off button.
My decision is I like the X camera better, it is easier to focus, and much snappier. Plus designated camera button! I found on the Incredible while the pictures look great on the phone itself and in gallery, that as soon as they were uploaded the colours looked washed out and not as great. I know this is due to the AMOLED screen. But both overall great. My decision is the X though.

The sound quality on my Incredible is bad, especially compared to by Blackberry. Has anybody else had this issue? Verizon thinks it may be a bad handset and they're going to replace it, but I'm wondering if I should switch back to the Blackberry.
