HTC Incredible :: Camera Application Software Improve Photo Quality?
Aug 9, 2010
I'll keep this one short - I just want to know if anyone has tried some of the available camera apps, and actually noticed better Incredible photos with less noise, brighter indoor photos without flash, color rendering, or better focus. If you could explain any theoreticals on how software interacts with the hardware to produce such improvements, that would be appreciated too.

For those who don't know yet. The desires back cover has a camera lens protector made by very cheap plastic, that scratches very easily. When this happens, the pictures will have a "glowing", blurry, un sharp look. What I did was removing the piece of transparent plastic "lens protector" on the back cover and then used a small piece of screen protector and sticked it on the lenses. Even without it the chances you actually scratch the lens is virtually none. So now I have a hole in my back cover, but I dramatically improved my picture and video quality.

Is it possible that someone could create an App for the Camera to improve picture quality? Is it even possible to improve things like Shutter speed, blurriness, grain in picture and ISO through an App?

I noticed this under the Incredible Wikipedia page the other day as a "tip" for improving call quality;
- Go to Phone and Dial ##778
- Choose Edit Mode
- Password is 000000
- Go to CDMA Settings
- Scroll all the way to bottom
- Change Home Page, Home Orig, and Roam Orig from option EVRC to EVRC-B
- Hit Menu and Commit Changes
- Phone reboots

Some Droid users were having the same call quality issues and someone suggested this fix. Worked for some, not for others. As always, be careful if applying:

Codes to enter the programming menu can be found here: How to Increase Droid X Call Quality? Relevant EVRC-B settings are under NAM CDMA Settings on the Incredible. I myself am not experiencing the call quality issue, so I can't vouch for the results. Link above indicates it may cause extra drain on battery. I used this same code years ago on a Samsung "dumb" phone and it did wonders for call quality and I did not notice a difference in battery life.

I dont know if its just my handset or some bug but the camera sucks for a 5mp phone. I have seen 2mp phones which take better pictures. Is there any app to fix this? Can i expect an improvement in android 2.0?

I now understand that the strange red-eye housing over my camera lens, which looks so much like an android (or maybe an HTC engineer) after a long night of drinking, is purported as protection for the actual lens. Why HTC didn't just settle for a sliding blackout cover instead of this bulky lesion is anybody's guess. I know that it's relative permanence over my lense will certainly not protect my photos from any dirt and scratches which this protector picks up, so I have been extremely careful to keep it clean and un-scratched. What I suspect is that this lens cover may be responsible for some of my camera quality issues, such as high noise, a reddish tint which tends to flicker on and off, some periodic jerking of the autofocus (flashing out of focus) when you are hardly moving, and indoor shots which are much, much darker than life without the flash. Hey, I get that this camera, no matter how many megapixels they can list, doesn't come with a world-class sensor, but I would like to know from anyone with a background in photography what they think of my concern that even a clean, transparent cap can reduce the amount of light entering the actual lens, while adding its own reflective noise. The same with the opaque cylinder which surrounds the lens (the red eye housing), from a photo-quality standpoint is looks to me like it's only good for cutting the light. If removing this cover would make a significant difference, then it may still not be the best solution as it leaves the lens at risk, but I am still interested in any qualified opinions on how much this red-eye housing causes, if any. It may be good for the future of smart phone design if they see that they have educated consumers, who are paying attention to such possible problems.

So I select a contact photo from a high resolution picture on the sd card. When that contact makes a call to me or I call them, the contact photo comes up on the phone app and is very low quality and almost pixelated. Not sure what I'm doing wrong, but I couldn't find a spot to change the resolution or quality.

Do you have any problems with call quality and/or calls dropping? I personally have never had a problem. I am in a major city and not the country or rural area. I'm just trying to see what percentage of users have these issues.

I have not noticed this posted yet so just adding here for those that have not found it. The new camera/video/gallery application supports cropping. After taking a photo or viewing in the gallery, press the Menu button and Crop. You can resize the crop box by touching the edges or move it by touching in the center. Using this feature I was able to create and share panoramic images that were much more interesting. Clicking Menu and then More reveals the "Show on Map" command which displays the location the photo was taken.

I love my HTC Incredible, but I've compared my Incredible to my friend's Incredible. The camera quality is TOTALLY different. We set both phones on the same setting. His picture is crisp and can take detail quality picture without any flickering or noise problem, but mine totally craps out.

I have had my Hero for a few days. My prior phone was the Palm Pre. The pre was a great phone and when webos 1.40 came out, video recording was great. The downside of the phone is that it felt that I was holding an egg and the overall build was horrible. Not to mention that the screen would go funky if it was used for more than 5 minutes. I went with the Hero because I love HTC phones. I've heard so many great things about it. I have issues with taking pictures and recording videos with this phone. The picture quality is horrible and so is the video recording. I have only recorded one video...its of my 5 year old singing (25 seconds) and it looks like she is possessed! It appears that the phone cannot keep up with movement. I know it doesn't have a flash and I know how to adjust the settings. Even in bright light everything appears washed out. Are there any fixes or 3rd party apps that could resolve this? Will the new 2.1 update improve things?

The dual LED flash on the EVO works well in moderately lit situations but when shooting in the dark the flash makes images extremely bright and washed out. I was messing around with the camera settings and was able to produce decent results by changing ISO, brightness, etc. but that's a pain. Instead, tape a small strip of plain white paper over the LED flash. It diffuses the flash and makes a huge difference.

My Hero has the latest ROM and is running on O2. when i get an MMS, the picture quality is terrible. i have been sent MMSs from different phones (inc. iphone) and different networks. The pictures look great on the phones on which they were taken, but appear low resolution when received on my hero. I can't find any setting to increase the quality. I do notice that when I open the received photo in albums, it is super tiny. So it looks like the Hero (or Android) is shrinking them. Are there some settings I can change? I can't find anything that appears relevant. Or else an app that will help?

I'm not sure how to explain this. If I take a picture with my camera, it looks great on my phone. Colors are deep and full and the sharpness is fine. However, when I mail it to myself or try to access it from my computer, the colors look washed out and flat. It's not really a blown highlight problem and I'm shooting at 8MP. Here's an example:

I'd really like to fix this.

I'm sorry if this has already been asked. But i already searched. Every time i make a video it has horrible quality and the sound quality is horrible too. A 5mp camera should be able to have very good quality don't you think? My friend has the i phone and i'm pretty sure its not better than 5mp and its video quality is amazing.

I Love my HTC Droid Incredible. I have no problems using the camera or moving images where I want them (Facebook, Flickr, or my PC). As I take photos, they are saved as a file name like "IMAG0029.jpg". They sequentially increment. I am fine with that.
What I would like, is, a way to re-set the embedded number to zero; either when the camera is empty (after a download), or manually.

When taking photo's this weekend that involved zooming in i found that the picture taken was never in focus. I have enabled the image stabilizer function but still whenever i zoom at all it is blurred (not sharp). When taking a picture that didn't involve zooming the image is sharp as you would expect from the camera. Is anyone having this trouble or is it just a dodge phone/camera i have and should go back to my supplier and exchange it?

Has anyone else experienced a strange problem with the Milestone (running 2.1) camera - in every photo, the right edge shows a thin vertical strip of the next photo! Shows in both Gallery & Media Gallery.. but don't have a similar issue in a video.
