HTC EVO 4G :: Front Facing Camera Quality?
Sep 7, 2010
Quality of their Front Facing Camera? I recently received a refurb from Sprint and noticed that my pics come out like this... The back camera is perfect, just the front looks like this.

If you could only choose one of these, which would you have chosen for the Fascinate? (Obviously it would be best to have both).

I have recently seen quite a few people on here looking for an easy way to access the front camera. Search the market (or Google) for an app called Mirror 4 Evo. periodically do a market search for Evo and you will find some good apps. Some made for the evo and some will tell you if they work on the evo or not.

I downloaded the Tango app and its great to communicate with iPhone 4 users. When testing it out with a friend being in the same place, I could see him clearly but he couldn't see me. We were standing next to each other in the same kind of light (street light at night). I could see me on his phone but it was very dark and it was more of the background light, i don't get it i thought that the Evo front camera was better than the iphone 4's front cam?

I'm currently a Desire owner and contemplating pre-ordering the Desire HD. The deciding point for me is if it has a forward facing camera or not...
Nowhere on the internet mentions a forward facing camera. HTC, when I emailed them, stated the phone does not support video calls, however I then sent an email saying it looked like it had a forward facing camera on the earpiece and they replied to confirm that yes, it was a forward facing camera.
Looking at the pictures of the Desire HD, at the top right of the earpiece / speaker you can see a small object that looks like a forward facing camera.
Despite the email from HTC I'm still sceptical because it's not been mentioned anywhere else, including on their own specs on their website.

Will anyone really use this for anything other than taking a pic of yourself? (at least early on) I hope a feature like this with video call capability works with all carriers...especially the new iphone 4g (im an HTC man, but the fact is so many ppl will have the new iphone). i have the feeling we will be the firsts with this technology and never really get to use it on a regular basis with this particular phone.

Is that pinhole lens looking deal above the word Sprint on the phone the front facing camera? How do you activate it? When I go in to the camera and camcorder, it defaults to the lens on the back. I've looked at the settings, and I'm not seeing where to activate it?

I've just been fooling with the front facing camera and I noticed something that maybe some of you can explain more thoroughly. When I have the camera held vertically, the alignment is great, but when I turn the phone horizontally the image has a funny angle. It is almost like the lens is angled to the right, which would mean that it is slightly angled down when held vertically. Am I just getting goofed up by the "mirror image" issue? This isn't a problem, but it does make self portraits while being horizontally held pretty weird.

Does the front facing camera work for qik? and what about the pic quaality does it go all the way to 8mp, i take a lot of pics so is really important tome, any other feature that doesn't work that you guys think is important(4g, radio and hdmi), i would like to used 4g but don't mind too much and i'm running fresh 3.2.0.0 just looking for something fast and new to play, i have launcher pro+ so not problems with widgets, the only thing i might miss will be the dialer because stock android is just ugly and not functionality as HTC(and the keyboard too)

I have rooted my Kindle Fire HD which you probably know only has a front facing camera. I would like to use it to take photos of items I am selling on eBay. Any tricks/tips I can use to do this because with front facing you can't see what sort of picture you are taking.

I believe DroidDave mentioned this in another thread over the weekend and I thought, "Hah! yeah right..." But I was just standing outside in the sun and noticed that it does seem to have a tiny lens in the top left corner of the phone. It could not be very good quality, but it does seem to be there... This is not wishful thinking on my part because I cannot see myself ever having a need for a front facing camera anyway, but it is interesting.

Are you able to use the front facing camera to take a pic of yourself? I'm not an ego maniac, lol, just an idiot I guess. One more question, is there any other way using the stock programs to assign a picture to a contact without having to use the phone's own camera? i.e. linking a pic to contact from facebook or from the sd card?

just went in to the verizon store to see why my girlfriends fascinate(i have an incredible ) wouldn't update. here's the conversation:
guy: it was pushed out to the first 1000, but things went wrong so they pulled it back(talking about the update i500.DI01)
us: ok so we shouldn't be worrying?
guy: no. but you'll get it sometime next week. then you'll get one the week after(didn't say what it would include) and then there will be one in november that will activate the front facing camera.
us: wait, what?
He showed us the 3 little dots on the top of the phone(sensors and i guess a camera).
He said that he talked to a samsung rep yesterday in the store and this is what he told him. the guy actually has a samsung fascinate and showed us so i'm going to believe him.
If you look closely at the 3 dots, the one on the left is alone. the one(s) on the right kinda have two different colors(light sensor and proximity sensor) so i still am going to believe him.

I dont understand why people complain so much about phone not having front facing cameras on networks that dont support video calling. How often do you take pictures of yourself? Even if you had one i am willing to be you would use it a few times shortly after you got the phone and then almost never again.. Not flaming anyone for wanting it im just sayin..

So has anybody done this yet, I could imagine 2 small mirrors attached on to the back of the camera would do the trick to angle the lens to face the front. It would have to be clipon to work over our cases. Any pics of this actually being done, if not lets get some pictures of future attempts at this. That would be finding fantastic.

Okay I've decided to stick with sprint/get the evo
but i was wondering..
Is there an app to change the megapixels of the front facing camera?
My friend has an iphone and she can actually download an app to change the megapixel from 3.0/3.2 to like 7.
Now I love taking pictures and webcaming but 1.3 is going to take horrid pictures(i mean there is the 8 megapixel on the back) but I'd love to take a self-portrait
so i was wondering can you change the megapixels of the camera via an app in the android market and if so what's the app called.

EVO has been nothing short of a roller-coaster ride of highs and extreme lows for me. I purchased an EVO on launch day, almost a month ago now. The second day of owning the phone I discovered that my front-facing camera didn't work. I had to wait three weeks (for more to get in stock at Best Buy) to get it exchanged for a new one.
Now, after not even having the new phone for a week... IT IS BRICKED! I downloaded and installed the OTA update. Then, apparently like many others, I accidentally re-installed the same update. I didn't even mean to. Just out of habit of checking for updates I made the mistake. Now, I am bricked.
After reading the forum posts about the bricking issue, (after mine was bricked ) I immediately went back to Best Buy to do ANOTHER exchange. Of course, they don't have any in stock and none of the other stores within a 45 mile radius do either. That is 12 stores total. I called every single one of them myself just to double-check that the Best Buy employee actually called them.
Now, I am on a waiting list... AGAIN! I desperately want to love the EVO. This is the most excited I've ever been about a cell phone, but it's been such an emotional nightmare for me. I don't think my high blood pressure can take any more of this bull sh*t! I have never owned an HTC device before. I have always heard that they, well... suck. Now, even though I want so much to love the EVO, I am starting to believe they do suck as a company. People on here will say "Oh, you get these sort of issues with any device launch." "It's new technology, and comes with the territory." Well, I say BOLLOCKS! Bricking a phone for accidentally installing an update that's already been applied? REALLY?
Sprint is about to be flooded with calls from pissed off people like me who aren't stupid people who made this mistake. Not everyone checks internet forums for every device they own before doing anything to those devices. This is a massive failure in programming and is about to cost them a ton of money. Not to mention the negative word of mouth.
I don't want to give up on EVO, but somebody please tell me what I am supposed to do? If a new one isn't in my hands by Friday, I have no choice but to go to Best Buy and get my money back. I will just wait for the next best thing to come out, that ISN'T AN HTC.

I am thinking of getting this phone or the Nexus1, but neither seem to have a front facing camera, is that true? Ive seen people online saying the x10 has a FFcamera, but I had a look at the pdf manual of the phone, and there was no mention of a second camera. That would be a massive negative for me seeing Fring has already brought video calls to Symbian phones.

So the picture im posting is from droid-life and was one of the first leaked shots of the droid x. So I just wondering if anyone else is as pissed as me at the fact that they delayed this phone just so they could remove the front facing camera and place it on the droid pro when that comes out later this year.

we got a requirement to record video from front and rear cameras simultaniously.. In the Android 2.1 SDK we only have the MediaRecorder.VideoSource.CAMERA and DEFAULT, but not FRONT_CAMERA and REAR_CAMERA. So, is there any other way to record from Front camera.. like any third party API's.
