HTC Hero :: How To Install New Rom?

I know this may seem elementary to some ppl, but I thought I would ask for other noobs like me. I want to install a different ROM, I have 5.4 villan and want to try something new... what are the steps that I need to take? I hear a lot of ppl saying "needs a full wipe", what exactly is that ? and what do i need to do? I'm currently looking at the threat "how to root + install custom rom" where should I start since I've already Rooted my phone? one more question.. is Modaco a step down from villan 5.4? I realize that it's based on 1.5... but will I miss anything HUGE? liike the market place or bluetooth?

I hate the lock screen on the Hero, I know their is a way to turn it off, but i don't like getting a message and then the phone doing something in my pocket. Is their a way to extract the .apk of the lock screen from the droid, and just install it on the hero, I understand that the resolution on the hero is different, but hate the current lock screen, i have to slide it down 2-3 times for it to recognize. I downloaded lock 2.0 already on the market, its not bad. but it takes 3-4 seconds on my phone to actually give me the slide to unlock screen.

Rooted my Hero, installed the fresh 2.0d ROM, I have a theme that I just downloaded. How do I flash it my hero? would this process be similar to flashing ROM w/o actually having to wipe? (saving to SD card, power off Hero, boot in recovery, choose theme, allow installation, reboot?)

So I can't install custom rom. I have rooted phone. Every time when i try to enter Hboot I get this error : Searching HEROIMG.zip ,HEROIMG1.zip and it doesn't finds it and returns back. I also cannot do a flashrec. I renamed image into recovery-backup,recovery etc,etc, but it says Flash failed,I changed version from the newest to the oldest tried many image files. Nothing helps. When I try to enter a recovery menu I cannot get a custom recovery menu,I am only being stucked at normal hero recovery menu.

Ive just debrended my 3UK HTC Hero and installed the 2.1 update. I used to use the apps Tunee Music and Music Junk quite often but now I cant find them in the market. I can only find "MP3 Download" which I dont feel is as good as those two apps. Could anybody tell me if it is possible to install these again or have they been discontinued.

Got my HTC Hero on Orange 2 days ago, also updated it to android 2.1
Now the problem is that I was browsing the android store and saw a theme I wanted. I downloaded it and everything but I don't know how to set it as a theme, just need help with that. Thanks to anyone that replies.

Just got my htc hero yesterday and i am loving it!! Anyway i was reading about an update that speeds the hero up a bit (i have noticed sluggishness at times) and so i download it off the htc website, once i started running it, it said i was going From: Image version: 2.73.405.66 To: Image version: 2.73.405.5
Should i install this update? Or am i going backwards?Im with Vodafone UK if this makes a difference.

Since it is a Linux running there i wanted to ask if it is possible to install programs like "apt-get", "man" and such things.I've already asked google, but it looks like everyone tells me to install apt-get via the packet manager from the distribution... and well i haven't seen apt-get in the market.Also is there a website which shows me some programs after rooting from which i can benifit with its use?

I've been hearing that with android you cannot install apps on an SD memory card? Does that mean you have to use the onboard memory of 512mb? That wont hold many apps AT ALL. If so that is a horrible choice by HTC to not incorporate a big storage and forget about the use of an SD card.

Over the last 6 months, I've bought several applications through the market without any problems. Yesterday, I bought Camera Zoom FX which downloaded just fine. But after downloading, it's been stuck at "Installing." in the Download-section of my Market. It sais "Purchased" in the upper right corner (as usual) and I've received the receipt through e-mail. I tried to install another app afterwards, and that worked just fine. Its about 24 hours since I purchased the app now, but it's still trying to install. I've rebooted the phone at least 5 times, cleared the Market-cache before and after rebooting. I've even tried to remove my SD-card just in case.If I click and hold the application in the Market-app, the only choice I get is "Details", not "Uninstall" and the other options I usually get. When I go to the apps details, the button at the bottom is greyed out and says "Installing..". This means I can't cancel the installation or choose uninstall.
My Hero has the official 2.1 version (fully updated) without root or other modifications.I've looked through the forum several times, including what seems to be relevant posts, but I can't seem to find any real solution for this problem. Anyone know how I can fix this? I think it's really strange that Android doesn't have any form of time-out or something for this..

After 2.1 install i can not turn off wifi when i am at home... i try turn off it with widgets and via settings but after 5 seconds it turns on automatic again... also i noticed that after 2.1 my battery life became much shorter..

I accidentally removed the default Weather App on the Main Page. This is the nice weather app on the main screen which takes up about 1/2 of the screen.
I went to add it back but I cannot find it. When I try to add the HTC weather map, it says there is no room - it wants to take up the entire screen.
Where is the default weather app that goes on the main screen that takes up half of the screen only?
