HTC Hero :: How Can I Install Linux Programs?
Mar 1, 2010
Since it is a Linux running there i wanted to ask if it is possible to install programs like "apt-get", "man" and such things.I've already asked google, but it looks like everyone tells me to install apt-get via the packet manager from the distribution... and well i haven't seen apt-get in the market. Also is there a website which shows me some programs after rooting from which i can benifit with its use?

Just wanted to know is it possible to install Fastboot on Ubuntu Linux. If so, any guide or link? I hate starting my Windows just to flash another kernel.
But also I would need drivers for my SE Arc S , is it even possible?

I got a wacom graphic tablett wich I want to use on my Android Tablet PC. Of course Android hasn't got a working driver for it, so thats why I want to install an opensource linux driver. So my first question is, if this might be possible. The linux driver is made for a 2.6 Kernel which of course is not complete the same as my 2.6 android Kernel, but are they similar enough to at least give it a try?
And I got an other question: A grafic tablett is you know... nothing else as a weird mouse so am I might be able to tell Android that it shoud use a simple mouse driver for the graphic tablett? Because my mouse is running well on it.

The 2 programs I have of concern are both unavailable on the market.Shapewriter and a legal beta of Swype. My phone needs a factory because screwy things are happening.Although I screwed up my swype by deleting the installer, which i though i could do, so that doesn't work any longer now anyway. Is there a way to save the programs fro later?

i got a xperia x10 from wirefly couple weeks ago.It is a brand new phone everything goes pretty well. but one problem is i cant install any programs that i downloaded from other sites. The security is set to block the installation of applications not from Android Market.i did the research online and tried to clink setting--->application--->there are only two choices on there 1.manage application 2.development. I could not find the third choice, which it suppose to be "UNKNOWN SOURCE".

I just installed a custom ROM (LeeDroid 2.1a with A2SD+), which installs Froyo version of Android. (Apps install on an EXT3 partition of the SD Card, that the phone thinks is internal memory). However, roughly 25% of apps don't work (ie. Swype, HTC's More Widgets (ie. Dice), TypoClock) . Whether I use Sense or LauncherPro, the same result. Either they don't show up in the app drawer (but can be seen in Applications), or can't be launched (via Quick Info). The apps installed via the Android Market show as installed, but the OPEN button is greyed out. These are apps that worked before on 2.1 Eclair. So with no more info than "Cannot launch application", I can't figure out if its Froyo or the custom ROM (LeeDroid A2SD+) that's the "root" of the problem.

i successfully got into adb in recovery mode fairly easily on my ubuntu 10.4 laptop using the following method- this should also work for a linux live boot from a usb flash drive
in one terminal tail and follow log messages
~$ tail -f /var/log/messages
In another terminal run the loop
Then
1. plugin usb and keep it plugged in
2. remove battery, eject sd card.
3. put battery in
4. press vol- and power
5. after around 6 seconds, your terminal with the log will show something like "new high speed USB..."
6. press vol- to select recovery
7. press the power button
8. IMPORTANT- as soon as you see a new log entry (something like "USB disconnect"), pop in the sd card
check your loop terminal for adb. if it doesn't work, repeat at step 2

I'm a Linux user, so the idea of rooting the phone is one of the many reasons I picked up this phone. However, I've been reading the forums and searching around, and have yet to find anything about rooting *from* Linux. Ubuntu and Fedora find the Hero beautifully; I've had better response mounting this than some portable hds I own. But has anyone successfully tried rooting any Android phone from a Linux OS? I'd really rather not install Windows just to do this. I imagine Wine might help, but there's got to be a better way to access Linux-to-Linux than using Windows.

Click on All programs > Click on Search button, type a character. The filter does not go away even after you have exited the menu. Any other way to show all programs without restart? Is it only mine or is it a bug in Hero?

After pretty much a day of doing nothing on the phone except a few texts (GPS and WIFI were on all day), I got home and started playing with the phone. It got SOOOOOOOOOO slow (and I'm not nitpicking, I'm talking WinMo-hang-slowness....believe me, I understand a little bit of lag, but this was insane!) so I checked the Applications and Manage Applications. Now I know everyone's first answer is "get a task manager, etc" but I am not going to give into that, because I believe it'll cause more problems, or at least potential for more problems, by adding more variables to the equation if something goes wrong. I was looking at some of the applications that seem to be using quite a bit of RAM/ROM and had a question for the community:
The biggest 3 applications were:
Mail - 34.80 MB (34.25 MB Data + 556 KB Cache) and using 6.78 MB Ram
Contacts Storage - 4.09 MB total (all data) and 11.56 MB RAM
com.android.providers.calendar - 2.78 MB total (all data) and 11.02 RAM
What does everyone else's look like? I know I'm not going to be touching the Contacts Storage or com.android.providers.calendar stuff, but what happens if I clear my data and cache in mail? I have it hooked to an Exchange Server at work. What exactly gets cleared, and will that help with any of my lag? Do these numbers look pretty representative of everyone else's?

So I removed a widget and then went back to put it back on and got the msg there wasn't room. I played around a bit moving and removing items to make room. I learned that while there doesn't seem to be room for the widget, there is room for the "program" for the same app/function.So now I'm wondering, what is the difference between these three? Will one result in more or less battery drain? Is the widget quicker to launch it's program equivalent?Should I avoid placing one type on the home page?

After the update, when I open uninstaller I can see these two programs relating to the 2.1 update.
com.htc2.1-update1
and
android system 2.1-update
I am wondering If I can delete the "com.htc2.1-update 1" as both are pretty large files. Will this effect the android system 2.1 update? or is this the "set up" that can be deleted once installed.

I wasn't able to find anything on this after a cursory search, but it seems like my music player sometimes kicks in when the screen is off and the phone is stowed in my pocket. I can't seem to recreate the behavior predictably by playing with any buttons, though, so I'm not sure what's triggering it.
I have the new HTC Hero on Sprint.
Any ideas what might be causing this behavior, or how I can stop it? It's pretty embarrassing, and I'm nervous to go into a theatre with the phone at all now, even when it is on silent. Even short of the music player, more often the phone will wake from screen-off with some other page up front (not the main home page, but one of the other views like the home page, the ones you get to by flicking right or left from the home page...
