HTC Hero :: Package Installer - Allows To Install Apps

Sep 29, 2010

I believe the 'Package Installer' is the thing that allows me to install apps?

I've only just noticed it in my 'manage applications' - I'm sure it never used to appear at the top of the list - and I'm tight on memory - so when it takes up 13mb as it does now I'm a bit stuck.

Can I click 'clear data' on it - or will that remove apps? There is no option to clear cache - all 13mb is listed in the Data.

Is there any way of installing an app through any other means than clicking on the .apk file in the folder?

Would it be possible to manually extract the apk archive and move the files to appropriate folders somewhere in /root/?

Android :: Free Space Required For Package Installer

Sep 7, 2009

The package installer looks to take up a good amount of space when installing applications. We've published a very large game (ProjectINF - 6mb). And it looks to be taking up a good amount of space during the install process, to the point that we have a lot of users emailing us with complaints/requests to "fix it".

From what we've seen, it looks to take about 22mb of free space to install a 6mb apk. While I can imagine taking double or so for unpacking and temp locations, almost 4x the size seems a bit high. After an install with 22mb free, the device has 16mb free (which makes perfect sense). Users also seem to be getting errors on the market when trying to install with less than that amount of space (with no real clear error message, just "Install Failed".

Android :: Failed To Install Apk File By Package Installer

Nov 24, 2010

I have some problem installing my apk file in code. Wondering if anyone could find out what I did wrong.
What I was trying to do is put a Check Upgrade function in our program. When user clicks it, it will send request to our web server and find out what is the latest version. I use app versionName to stamp a version, something like 2010.11.23. I don't use the version code in Manifest.xml file. So our program sees the latest VersionName is later than itself, it will download the latest one, and then use the following code to install the new apk file:

CODE:........

Now looks like, everytime when I changed the VersionName, it will fail to install the apk file. It downloads the file fine. I don't know exactly why. Sometimes, in Eclips, when I hit debug, I got error saying "Re-installation failed due to different application signatures". I don't know if this is the same error caused the installation failed.

So, looks like my questions are:

Should that upgrade logic work? I am wondering if it has something to do with the VersoinName.
What could cause the application signature change? (I did sign our program before I put it on our server, but I always use the same key file for different versionName. )

Sprint HTC Hero :: Hook Up Without Data Package?

I bought a hero used and went to hook it up to my work account (my only phone), but I can't talk my boss into paying for a data package and sprint wont split it out. Is there any way to trick sprint into thinking it is just a regular phone so they will connect it and I can just use it with wifi?I tried searching on this topic but didn't find anything.I might not have been searching for the right wording.

Android :: Installing Applications From Installers - Wheres Installer?

Apr 6, 2009

Couple of really big issues here that SHOULD be no brainers! But, they aren't. Anyone know what the EXACT name of an application installer on the Market that allows me to install appliations from the memory card? I've been looking for a few weeks now. A search for application installers that allow me to install a .apk file from the memory card turn up mentions about "Apps Installer" and "Application Installer", but I can't find anything with that name in the Android Market. Partial name searches like "Installer" turn up NO results. (That's not very "Google Like", now isn't it? The Android Market website, BTW doesn't allow you to search? Is that right? You can only search the Android Market from the phone? I can understand not allowing us to DOWNLOAD from the market to our PC, but not search so I can find the appliation name I want? Android : Way To Get Two Applications In Same Package

Aug 27, 2009

What I am trying to do is install two applications, packaged from the same code, but with different names and different strings.xml files.

I created the two apk files, however, when trying to install the second application, it fails because it says it's already installed. From what I can tell, it thinks the two applications are the same, my guess is because of the package attribute in the manifest. I modified the manifest with a different package name, but R is generated based on that package name and that affects the rest of the code.

So, my question is this: What's the process I should be using to install two applications using the same code, but with different names and different strings.xml files?

Sprint HTC Hero :: Applications Shutting Down

Jul 1, 2010

when all of a sudden the app shutdown on me. I thought that was strange, I looked at the battery and it was full charge. I tried to access it again and the same thing. The notification bar that you slide down won't stay down. I eventually shut it off and left it alone. Today I pick it up to play around with it some more and I opened up an app and sure enough after 10 minutes of use it did the same thing. None of the apps will stay open.

Sprint HTC Hero :: Keep The Screen On While Using Applications?

Apr 5, 2010

This may have been asked before but how do you keep the screen from going dim or off completely when you using apps? The only app that seems to keep the screen from going dim is Navigation. If I use an app like Google Maps it goes dim and then dark at the set time. I would like it to stay on specifically when it's got the charger hooked to it. It will only go dim with the charger on but I'd like it to stay bright. Or do I have to change my setting to "never turn off" everytime I want it to stay on?

Sprint HTC Hero :: Applications - Before And After Rooting

Mar 2, 2010

I've been lurking the rooting scene and other places for quite a while, but have only just joined up in these forums. (I'm no forum nooby been on and been active on dozens of forums)
I have to admit, this most likely has been answered before, but I have been extremely busy lately due to school.

The question: I have refrained from rooting my Hero (I am a linux user in case any one wanted to know ) due to time constraints, I have yet to root it. I will probably attempt this weekend.
I bought the hero Oct. 11th, the day it came out iirc, and I have built up quite a hefty sum of applications.
After the rooting process, I plan use the gumbo kernel, and fresh1.1. One of the reasons that have held me from rooting is what happens to those apps? I will flash Fresh1.1, so they will be deleted. Is there a way to extract all the applications from the nandroid backup I will make before flashing Fresh 1.1, and put them on the SD card and install them? I would love very much not to have to go and individually download each application from the market again.

Sprint HTC Hero :: Applications Are Getting Corrupt

Nov 5, 2009

My applications are getting corrupt and I can't seem to find a cause. Some select applications such as meebo, mkremote lite, 3d cube runner, Google Sky are getting corrupt. The icons in the programs menu get changed and renamed to com.meebo.accounts.Ac... or com.escmobile.c... or End User License Ag.., etc. Some of these applications will launch and some just crash when i launch them and I would have to reinstall them to fix it however they would just get corrupt again in less than 24hours. I have a sprint htc hero.

Sprint HTC Hero :: Set Individual's Ringtones - Notifications And Applications

Dec 15, 2009

I have multiple songs/ringtones/notifications that I would like to use. I want a single person within my contacts to have two different ringtones; one for when they call and one for when they send a message.

I can set the individual's ringtone within my people settings, I can set the default notification tone within my SMS program (still debating between ChompSMS and HandCent, suggestions?) Is it possible (as anyone knows) to set a notification for an individual within a SMS app while having it leave the default application notification alone as well as the custom ringtone within the phonebook settings I have set for individual people?

Sprint HTC Hero :: Loosing Data Connection After Installing Applications

May 25, 2010

I installed the official 2.1 update. I'm loving a lot about it. However when i installed a barcode reader like Barcode reader and Shop Savvy, I lost all connections to the internet, the market, Email, and even the weather. I was able to use the phone and text, but that was it. Then last night I installed the XDA keyboard, and I again lost all my data connections except phone and text. Is there a setting I need to change? or any other ideas for how to fix this issue? I should be able to install apps and not loose data connections. Should I try reinstalling the update?

Also, the battery seems to last just a tade less longer than 1.5 did. But no worries there. Would like to install apps without loosing connections. Photoshop, Google Goggles, History eraser, Astro file manager, Google maps (update i think), Shazam, Facebook, 3Banana notes, and Pandora. All that is on my home screen that might interfer with something is the clock with the weather widget, the people favorites widget, and that's all. Otherwise the home screens are just icons to the apps I use. Not sure if any of this helps sovle my problem.
