HTC EVO 4G :: Tethering At 4g Speeds?
Oct 19, 2010
So I just canceled my internet at my house after a frustrating experience with the cable company... so now I'm exclusively relying on the Evo for internet. My question is, is there any way to tether at 4g speeds? Either wired or wireless? I think I've read that the wireless tether app has not really been coded for 4g so the speeds do not come even close to typical 4g speeds. I also would rather avoid pdanet and easy tether because I don't want to pay in order to get full access. I've done some research in the matter but still have things kinda muddy in my mind.

It seems that when I'm tethering my connection is not very strong at all. I believe its only about 6kbs. Anyway to increase this?

I Tether using the easytether app from the market. I at times I get download speeds of 19.00kb-20.00kb, but at times I some how get 100.00kb-400.00kb. Why do I get the higher speed only for a few hours on random days of the week? And Is there a way I could speed up tethering so I can get at least 100.00kb download speed most of the time.

I've noticed that lately, my download speeds on my rooted Droid (running BB 0.5 most recently, though this "problem" occurred with BB 0.4 and LFY 1.6 as well) have not been stellar, though my upload speeds seem fine:
Could this be caused by the baseband? Im running C_01.43.01P. Prior to that, I was running (I think) 3E, which came with the phone, and worked fine with BB 0.4 but when the updated one came out I updated it since, hey, it's newer right? Anyway, (1) is this certainly the problem? and (2) if I choose to, how can I safely roll back to the 3E baseband?

Ever since I downloaded the new update (DI18) this morning, I cannot get good download speeds, but my upload speeds have greatly increased. Any ideas? Here is some proof If someone could give me a clue of what the problem could be, that would be great.

I rec'd my EVO on Sat. Based on what I read about the reason for the extra $10.00 fee for premium service, I went ahead and purchased the phone, even though I don't have access to 4G at this time or maybe never have I have been checking my 3G speeds with Speedtest.n##. I have never used a phone with wireless data, so I was not just sure what to expect. I live in Tulsa, OK and this morning I went for a drive around the city and took speed reading at various points. My 3G results ranged from 0.36 to 1.93 Mbps down and 0.36 up. I decided to stop in at a local T-Mobile store and run a test there and compare it with a T-Mobile phone. It just so happened that a friend was there with his Google N1. So, we both ran the speed test on the same server. The best I could get was 1.93 Mbps and he got 3.95Mbps down. This got me to wondering if these speeds are typical for Sprint and why pay the extra $10.00 per month for a phone that was billed as providing an enhanced wireless experience. It may be enhanced, but it sure is a slow experience. By the way, at home my Wi-Fi speeds are 10.08 down and 3.00 up. Now, I know that speed varies by area and that Sprint Tulsa may just be a poor service area. Of course, all of this in is anecdotal. But, I wonder how this compares to your real time experiences. Please don't flame me, I am total new to cell phones with data plans.

i love my Inc, but every time i run a speed test, I can't help but be disappointed. I am at my desk, with a decent 3G signal (-80dBm), and here is what i am getting using different servers (I am in NM):
Modesto, CA: .17Mbps Down, .80Mbps Up (158 ping)
Scottsdale AZ: 1.08Mbps Down, .28Mps Up
Flagstaff AZ: .47Mbps Down, .81Mbps Up (279 ping)
Las Vegas, NV: .49Mbps Down, .87Mbps Up (139 ping)
Albuquerque, NM: .51Mbps Down, .66Mbps Up(163 ping)
San Fran, CA: .57 Down, .89 Up
Truth be told, i expected at least twice the DL speeds (at least one megabit/s). Am I dealing with a weak network here, or should i be looking inward at a phone issue?

I currently have the EVO with Android 2.2 and build version 3.29. My data speed is horrible? 90% of time I get 300-400 kbps on i network test.com/android/test Some random times I get 800-1000 when I am driving. Is it the phone, OS or Sprint?I live in the Detroit metro area. Can I root and go back to Android 2.1 and will anything improve?

My Incredible has 1/2 bars most of the time. This would be ok if my data speeds weren't so terrible. Most of the time my DL is at 250kbps. The only time I had 4 bars was at the Verizon store, where I got 1.7Mbps DL. Are you guys and gals happy with your data speed?

I have horrible data service, Ill get a regular rate of about .09 KB/s up to 80 KB/s (but typically 10-30 KB/s)
On really good days I can get 90-120 KB/s but then my phone signal starts to die ... I've used cm 7 , stock and cm9 (current rom) and its the same on each one..(Already used every single data/signal booster in market and zep 3g booster)

As of yesterday im getting like .3mb down and literally 9kb up. this is after running both extreme labs and speedtest.nets apps from the market. I have full root(both steps from toast). Ive flashed a few rooms(BB, fresh, etc) but now i am back to the stock rom with root (Supersonic_1.32.651.6_ rooted) and i am still getting the same speeds.PRL updates have been done. I even did a full data restore(##3282#->data*->data restore). Nothing is working Im pulling the battery for a while to see if that helps.

Out of curiosity is anyone getting wildly different results from their handsets speedtests vs their actual download throughput? On 4G when I do a Speedtest using either the FCC's or Speedtest.net application I fall between 200-250K/sec, if I'm lucky regardless of server. Often less. Upload always seems to pin exactly at 1mb/sec regardless of my signal. On the other hand when I tether I consistently get 300K/sec. I'm starting to wonder if the Sprint Hotpot application caps at 300K/sec?Is there something wrong with the Speedtest app? People I can compare with here at work get better speeds on their iPhones 3G using the handset test but get AWFUL, terrible speeds tethering with their iPhones. Is there a reason the speedtests app do so poorly? Anyone have any idea if the Hotspot App caps throughput?

Whenever I try and playback music via BT, regardless of music player (I've tried 3) the music playback speeds up, slows down, speeds up, etc., and will NOT play at a consistant speed. All background processes are disabled, etc. I do NOT notice this same thing during video playback (although there is a 40ms delay in audio sync from the video), but it plays at a constant speed.

I've just bought tTorrent Pro, and the download speeds are horrendous, no more than 150kb/s maximum. Any other torrent downloader gives me speeds of up to 750kb/s. What's the deal?

I recently downloaded the speedtest.net app. I want to compare my wifi speeds at home vs. the 3g speeds i get in and around Los Angeles. Obviously I expect my wifi speeds to be higher but what kind of numbers should I be seeing in both cases? What's considered average or acceptable and what is considered great?

I am hoping some android geniuses might be able to help me out here. 1) How can I watch my MLB.tv subscription on this phone? I was very excited when I saw that android marketplace now had MLB at bat in its marketplace, but hugely disappointed when I found it does not support live games (like that other phone does). When I looked on Mlb.com for an answer it says Android does not support some sort of optimization technique that the other phone does. Its hard for me to believe with the hardware backing this phone that it is not possible. The workaround I used to use on my touchpro 2 was to use the skyfire browser to login and watch it. However when I download skyfire for android and try to watch the game it tells me I need to download flash. Is there a setting I might be missing? 2) Whats up with 4g speed? I know this probably isn't great to be bringing up about the company I work for but I have not seen myself or read of anyone's speedtest on the evo exceeding the 3MB/sec barrier. The speeds I consistently see are outstanding by 3g expectations but not near what I expected of 4g especially since I have seen our Mobile Broadband products consistently exceed those barriers. Is there something with device or software limiting these speeds?........................

I seem to get about 3Mbits down max speed on my hero, versus 17Mbits on my computer, both using wifi. Latency is also a slight issue. 3Mbits is okay, but just wondering if this is abnormal. I used the speedtest.net app, and I connect to my router using WPA1. Does everyone else get similar results? BTW I'm using Fresh 1.1 Rom.

There are a number of network types defined in TelephonyManager:
NETWORK_TYPE_GPRS
NETWORK_TYPE_EDGE
NETWORK_TYPE_UMTS
NETWORK_TYPE_CDMA
NETWORK_TYPE_EVDO_0
NETWORK_TYPE_EVDO_A
NETWORK_TYPE_1xRTT
NETWORK_TYPE_HSDPA
NETWORK_TYPE_HSUPA
NETWORK_TYPE_HSPA
Is there any info out there that describes what range of speeds you can expect on each of these? If that isn't available, it would be nice to be able to order them based on speed.

Anyone else in the 4G areas receiving poor download speeds? I have run the speedtest app on multiple occasions and in different areas of Houston and my usual results are 800kb/s download and 1.1 mb/s upload. Only one time did I crack the 1 mb/s download speed and it was by a large margin (2.7 mb/s).
Is anyone else seeing these kind of results?

with webOS there was a patch that basically 'removed' a download speed limit from the HP app store (which i believe was an app store limitation)
I typically have been downloading apps from G.Play over wifi at home, but just generically wondering if there was some type of cap implementation with android and/or G.Play, and a way to remove it via a mod?
running a rooted stock rom on a Sprint GS3.

I have a Xperia Z on T-Mobile I recently updated for 4.1 to 4.2 & now my data speeds are slower or nonexistent at certain areas of my job. I just wanted to know how is it possible for this to happen because I had a Galaxy SII with Sprint & the exact same thing happened.

running with the moto droid - since the latest update, my phone is chronically opening apps every few seconds and it is destroying my battery. before the update, i would have to kill maybe 3-4 apps over an extended period of time. now it takes about 1 minute and i'm killing 10-15 apps. any reason for this happening? how can i fix it? it's getting annoying when my battery life is terrible. i don't know a whole lot about the phone.

Across all three of my devices; Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S3, and Nexus 4, my download speeds for downloading and updating apps on the Google Play Store have been unbearably slow, taking 20+ minutes to download 5mb. Only while using wifi though. HSPA+ data through T-Mobile is quick and painless.
I have Verizon Fios as my ISP. I've seen numerous other threads complaining about this issue across the Web but none offer any type of explanation or solution. While restarting the router/modem alleviates the problem for a few minutes, it's no use..
Also, might I add that YouTube has been unusable as well do to awful buffering. I think there may be a conflict between Fios and Google's servers. Whatever this is, I'm getting fed up. I can't download or update any apps on my Nexus 4 that I just got today, not to mention on any of my devices at all.
I know it's not my Internet, speed tests reveal 20megs down and 5 up across all three devices and general Internet usage is awesome. Only YouTube and the Play Store have been affected.

I have positioned my Vibrant right next to my wireless laptop and am running the speed tests from Speedtest.net (app on phone and internet site from computer). The speeds shown are remarkably different on downloads: computer 4.5ish (wireless g) Vibrant 1.0ish and very inconsistent. What gives?
On an unrelated matter ...does anyone know how to turn back on the haptic portion of the wakeup puzzle? Mine no longer works and I cannot find a setting for this issue.
