Android :: Apps Opening At Rapid Speeds Destroying My Battery
Sep 7, 2010
running with the moto droid - since the latest update, my phone is chronically opening apps every few seconds and it is destroying my battery. before the update, i would have to kill maybe 3-4 apps over an extended period of time. now it takes about 1 minute and i'm killing 10-15 apps. any reason for this happening? how can i fix it? it's getting annoying when my battery life is terrible. i don't know a whole lot about the phone.

Will putting the Behold 2 stock that BH_man is working on fix the phones problems such as random apps opening and horrible battery life?

Little background: Before updating to 2.1 the battery would usually last about a day or a day and a half with moderate use(phone, texting, and social websites).I updated to 2.2 and battery drained very fast; so I hard reset and disabled Wi-Fi which helped, but still drained within a day with less than my average use(if I forgot to plug in the charger, it would be dead in the morning).I've since rooted and switched to Virtuous 2.7 with the custom kernel; which seemed to help out(with my "2.2" usage the battery life was about 16-20hrs...Wi-Fi disabled, now it's around 20-24hrs).What I noticed with the 2.2 update is "irregular" battery drainage. It would go to down to about 70%-80% fairly quick, but drain much more slowly down to about 40%, and then drain quickly to about 15%.Just a while ago, I unplugged the phone from the charger(It had finished charging earlier and I unplugged and plugged the charger again to make sure it's "topped off"), and drops to 98% in about a minute(zero use).I fire up the youtube app and watch Katy Perry's Teenage Dream(I don't like her singing but hey, it's a catchy song), and by the end of the song it's at 89% battery life. Anyone know what's causing this or know if this is normal?

About a week ago, at random times, my Incredible will become "Incredibly" hot in my pocket, and the battery begins to drain at a rapid rate (from nearly 90%+ to <20% in an hour). This seems to be accompanied by an icon resembling a "refresh" symbol at the top of the screen (a circle consisting of two arrows).I can't determine any common denominator as to when this takes place, it seems pretty random.I added Google voice and Shazam to my phone just prior to this problem beginning, but have noticed no usage relation. Please feel free to direct me to another thread / lock if this has already been discussed.

Starting yesterday I noticed that my battery was draining faster than usual, the phone having died after being used for half the day, when it typically makes it the full day. Nothing was being used more or less, and all of the application managers and battery life charts indicated that everything was running as normal. Then this morning after having the phone charged for the entire night, it tells me that on the remaining battery life the phone will only last about 7 minutes, and the percentage is dropping rapidly (about a percent every 30 seconds) .

I've noticed that lately, my download speeds on my rooted Droid (running BB 0.5 most recently, though this "problem" occurred with BB 0.4 and LFY 1.6 as well) have not been stellar, though my upload speeds seem fine:
Could this be caused by the baseband? Im running C_01.43.01P. Prior to that, I was running (I think) 3E, which came with the phone, and worked fine with BB 0.4 but when the updated one came out I updated it since, hey, it's newer right? Anyway, (1) is this certainly the problem? and (2) if I choose to, how can I safely roll back to the 3E baseband?

Ever since I downloaded the new update (DI18) this morning, I cannot get good download speeds, but my upload speeds have greatly increased. Any ideas? Here is some proof If someone could give me a clue of what the problem could be, that would be great.

Hope you guys can help. Since the 2.1 update I have certain apps which appear to be opening in the background when I didn't open them. I have Advanced Task Killer, and when I go in for example it shows Messages running, when I kill it, it will reappear in 30 secs or so, the same with MP3 store. Can these apps be stopped so they don't take up memory or what's the deal here. Thanks for any help.

When I go to advance task killer free it shows applications running that I did not start. Yet, after killing all these apps they show right back up next time I open Advanced Task Killer Free.

I'm running Android 2.2 on my Nexus One. Applications like Fring, Qik, Slot Machine, Amazon MP3, Shop Savvy, Battery Time Lite, and Settings Profiles Full are opening at random. I'm use the "kill all" widget from Advanced Task Manager every time I put away my phone, but they randomly open. I don't use my phone too much throughout the day, but my battery is close to 50% by the end of the day. It is not a battery problem, however this is my second battery. (I got my first one replaced) My phone is not rooted.

How the heck to I stop Virtual VM and Messages from automatically starting and running in the background every time I get a text message or voicemail? I have already downloaded/installed and set chompSMS to the default text app. Even though text messages will open/send in chompSMS automatically, the Messages and Virtual VM apps will still automatically open and run in the background without telling me. Since they sap up so much battery life on my Eris, I want them to stop opening.

I noticed that even when my battery hatch is closed all the way (and yes, I definitely clicked it into position fully), there is still a small opening between the fake carbon backing (that comes off all the way when you access the battery) and the little plastic piece that slides up and down to allow the carbon backing to be removed. On the top part, where the fake carbon backing meets the top part of the phone (the bit that has the camera on it), there is no such gap. Does anyone else have this? Just want to make sure it's 'normal' and that I don't have my backing on improperly / a defective phone.

A coworker of mine has an incredible, and since froyo she has only been able to open apps in landscape landscape. Every app...whether they are supposed to open that way or not. Has anyone else had this problem, or know of a way to correct it?

I was trying to open the Messaging app by tapping the green talking bubble icon labeled "Messaging," and repeatedly, as in 5-6 times, it loaded the Gmail app instead. I rebooted my phone and now it's working.

I have an activity which pops up a Dialog box, to get some text input from the user. The problem arises when you switch orientation. The Dialog disappears, so I have added code to set and check flags in the savedInstanceState, meaning that the Dialog is displayed again in these circumstances.I know when the window is going to be closed, but can't find a way of closing it manually. I open it with alert.show();but there doesn't seem to be any corresponding alert.destroy() method or similar.Any ideas how I can manually close the dialog box without user input?

I'm using advanced task killer to kill the tasks, and then it seems when i check back there are 12-14 apps open. It's destroying my battery. I used startup cleaner to clean up start up, hopefully that'll be useful. but i'm just trying to keep things as streamlined as possible, seems liek a lot of apps dont like to not be active

The only way I know this is having installed a task manager. There would be no other way of knowing this.
I have about 14 apps downloaded form the market. Not too many, but I was susrprised to see applications like shop savvy and My Backup automatically start up when my phone boots up. Whilst in the apps themselves, there seems to be no way of stopping this behaviour. Why would they do this ? Why is there no kill switch fro these apps natively for android ? It seems there is a lot of chatter about whether or not task managers are good for the platform, or whether we should just let android do it's thing on it's own. I'm really in two minds whether to carry on using a TM or not. It's for reasons such as shop savvy opening up on it's own when I don't want it to that I'm tempted to keep in, if only for my own piece of mind, and the ability to kill apps that don't need to be on. This MUST have a direct correlation with battery usage.
Anyway, I have to say that I've had most platforms, iphone, blackberry, symbian, and Android really does seem to me to be the best one yet. I am extremely happy with my Hero.

Is there a way to keep an Activity in memory after the user hits the back button on it?ActivitySearch is used frequently in my app, however after the user starts it up, then hits the back button, it's destroyed, and the next visit to it requires it be built from scratch again. If after its first construction, I could just request it be paused instead of destroyed on the back button, then I could reuse it. Is there a sensible way of doing this? The only way I could think of reasonably doing it is to combine ActivitySearch with ActivityMainMenu into a single activity, and simply switch views when the user chooses search, but this is probably a bad design.

I'm developing a game for Android. It's got a lot going on but is running reasonably smoothly. That is, of course, until the user touches the screen. While they're touching it, onTouchEvent is called (with action = ACTION_MOVE, x = 0 and y = 0) roughly once every ten milliseconds at what appears to be a fairly high priority, as it absolutely obliterates the framerate. As soon as the touch ends the framerate returns to its nice state.Has anyone encountered this? Is there a way to reduce the rate at which ACTION_MOVE events are generated, or to ensure that they're only generated when there is actual movement, or use a polling method that just gets the current location of the touch? Or even just a way to disable it entirely?

I read up on how Android handles "configuration changes" - by destroying the active Activity. The first question I really want to know from Android Team - why? I would appreciate an explanation on how the reasoning went, cause I dont get it =)In any case, the fact that it acts in that way puts us all, as I see it, in a world of pain.Lets assume you have a Activity which presents a number of EditText:s, checkboxes etc. If a User starts to fill that form with text/data and then changes orientation (or get a Phonecall), then all input the User made is gone. I havent found any way to preserve state. That forces us to make extremely painful coding to not loose all data.

I want to hide my app screen and then when the user clicks on the app again, I want to bring it to the foreground , but I want the app to maintain the screen that was pushed to background. Is there any way to do that right now?.Because when I try to hide my app, the surface of my app is gettng destroyed and so when I try to relaunch the app a new surface is created and my app status is changing.

I am finding that performance degrades after one or more screen rotations, and I presume that this is likely to be because an App's main Activity is destroyed and recreated each time the screen is rotated and that my app must be leaking memory when that happens.I have read that, contrary to what one might expect, not all the objects created by an app's main Activity (or in classes called by that Activity) are destroyed when the activity is destroyed. Specifically, I think I have read (although I can't now find where) that if the View uses a large bitmap member object then the Activity's onDestroy() method should be over-ridden and the bitmap should be explicitly recycled. Are there other objects that need to be destroyed or removed when the Activity is destroyed? What about Listeners? Is there a comprehensive tutorial or guide on this subject?

Does Android limit the rate of keystrokes when typing?
I have a custom bluetooth keyboard that can send entire sentences at once. On iOS, the text appears pretty much instantaneously. On Android, when I send the sentence it kinds of scrolls through and types it out, taking about a second to actually type out the entire sentence.
Basically instead of typing out the entire sentence at once, the text is entered one letter at a time with a little delay in between.
Is there a way to disable this keystroke limit? I would like to be able to type entire sentences quickly.

I'm not sure if it has to do with today's update but I have a pretty good idea it is. Whenever I got to ATK it shows many more apps 'open' than I specifically opened.
Say I opened Music and internet. Voice dialer, maps, and gesture search will have opened as well.
