I recently downloaded the speedtest.net app. I want to compare my wifi speeds at home vs. the 3g speeds i get in and around Los Angeles. Obviously I expect my wifi speeds to be higher but what kind of numbers should I be seeing in both cases? What's considered average or acceptable and what is considered great?

I've noticed that lately, my download speeds on my rooted Droid (running BB 0.5 most recently, though this "problem" occurred with BB 0.4 and LFY 1.6 as well) have not been stellar, though my upload speeds seem fine:
Could this be caused by the baseband? Im running C_01.43.01P. Prior to that, I was running (I think) 3E, which came with the phone, and worked fine with BB 0.4 but when the updated one came out I updated it since, hey, it's newer right? Anyway, (1) is this certainly the problem? and (2) if I choose to, how can I safely roll back to the 3E baseband?
I've just bought tTorrent Pro, and the download speeds are horrendous, no more than 150kb/s maximum. Any other torrent downloader gives me speeds of up to 750kb/s. What's the deal?

I Tether using the easytether app from the market. I at times I get download speeds of 19.00kb-20.00kb, but at times I some how get 100.00kb-400.00kb. Why do I get the higher speed only for a few hours on random days of the week? And Is there a way I could speed up tethering so I can get at least 100.00kb download speed most of the time.

I have run the speedtest app on multiple occasions and in different areas of Houston and my usual results are 800kb/s download and 1.1 mb/s upload. Only one time did I crack the 1 mb/s download speed and it was by a large margin (2.7 mb/s).
Is anyone else seeing these kind of results?
with webOS there was a patch that basically 'removed' a download speed limit from the HP app store (which i believe was an app store limitation)

Modesto, CA: .17Mbps Down, .80Mbps Up (158 ping)
Scottsdale AZ: 1.08Mbps Down, .28Mps Up
Flagstaff AZ: .47Mbps Down, .81Mbps Up (279 ping)
Las Vegas, NV: .49Mbps Down, .87Mbps Up (139 ping)
Albuquerque, NM: .51Mbps Down, .66Mbps Up(163 ping)
San Fran, CA: .57 Down, .89 Up
Truth be told, i expected at least twice the DL speeds (at least one megabit/s). Am I dealing with a weak network here, or should i be looking inward at a phone issue?
My Incredible has 1/2 bars most of the time. This would be ok if my data speeds weren't so terrible. Most of the time my DL is at 250kbps. The only time I had 4 bars was at the Verizon store, where I got 1.7Mbps DL. Are you guys and gals happy with your data speed?

I'm researching the development of an Android (2.2) app/service that will enable users to record short (I do emphasize short, < 30seconds) video on their phones and then upload that video (HTTP) to a server that will then transcode the video to other formats. That same user can download videos from other Android users and play them.
Now, I get a bit lost with everyones recommended approaches to all the issues in doing something like this because I haven't seen any ask this in a cohesive context. Ideally I would like a non commercial solution to this (as in no vendor/service being needed for the the video hosting/transcoding), but, feel free to include those as a recommendation (I've marked this as a wiki) as I know many like to use youtube and vimeo for the middle layer in all this.
The questions are
What server technologies do yo recommend for hosting and transcoding? What technology do you recommend for streaming the video (it would be nice to offer a high and low quality encoding depending on the users network connection) What video format and software do you recommend for converting the uploaded video on the server to be viewable later by other Android owners. Im assuming it's bad to do any transcoding on the phone prior to upload (battery/proc issues), but, if I'm wrong with that assumption what do you recommend?
The video will only need to render on an Android device, and in the future in a webkit html5 browser.
Bandwidth isnt cheap (even with numerous 30 second videos), so a good mix of video quality and video file size is important (streaming if needed to ensure quality vs. download). This is for android 2.2 devices with a video camera of course and medium to high density screen of 800x400 min. Open source solutions (server to receive the uploads, code to do the transcoding, server to do the streaming) are preferred, but not required. CDN's are an option, but I don't think that really figures in to the picture right now.

the problem is that i can't upload/download anything through all the applications that i install (WhatsApp,Facebook,foursquare...). Everytime that i try to upolad or download an item it always fail.
i noticed that the folders by Default created with those applications are not there from the beginning so i tried to create them manually but it didn't work.
i removed the external sd card so that i can install the applications directly in the internal sd card but no thing changed.
Maybe if i root my phone it will work but it doesn't resolve the situation.
one important thing that i notice is that the application installed with the system (not the new ones) like gmail give me the possibility to upload/download without a problem.
i tried to move the new applications to the folder /system/app in order to be executed the same way as the system applications but no change.
My earlier phone saved the sim contacts in a really bad way, long story short - when I search them on my new android phone [htc hero], they are all messed up.. I want to download them to my computer, edit them, and upload them back to the phone, how can I do that?

My T-Mobile Desire received the 2.2 update a couple of weeks ago and on Saturday I thought I'd try some 720p recording.Unfortunately the result is really disappointing; stuttering/jerky recording, poor image quality, poor sound quality etc.Can you take a quick look and tell me if I've done something wrong (wrong setting perhaps?) or if this is as good as it gets on the Desire?

It's not a moto thing because the Incredible has the Droid name attached to it, and it's an HTC phone. I would think all Android Phones put out by vzw would carry the name. Is the Fascinate not EVIL enough for the Robotic, Terminator marketing, and instead they use a merry go round conveyor belt with a bunch of Fascinates attached to it for commercials and marketing? My fear is that the Fascinate will get left behind, and the attention will go towards phones with the Droid name. When I say left behind I mean updates and what not, and just plain love from Google, considering the whole BING fiasco and how that must have pissed of Google.
View 10 Replies View RelatedSo, just reading around the forums and online sites, I guess Android 3.0 or gingerbread might be out around the holidays.Although the vibrant does meet the minimum requirements, google seems to want 3.0 only to run on superphones. If 1ghz, 4 inch screen, and 512 are min requirements.. This leads me to believe, that by the holidays, this phone will no longer be considered a superphone, there probably will be a 2 ghz. 4.3 inch, 1gb phone out. Why do I bring this up? Well I'm asking because, for those people who do not wish to root, and are depending on t-mobile/samsung updates to 3.0, what if samsung never releases a 3.0 update for the vibrant. This is the only reason I'm thinking about this phone.Just reading various sights, seems like google has made it clear, gingerbread 3.0 will be for superphones, and all other phones will stick to 2.2/2.1. I'm thinking by holiday season, samsung is going to put this phone in the "I'm sorry, you are stuck with 2.1/2.2 cateogry" because they probably will have a superphone out by then.If you can't get 3.0 on this phone via a true update, is it worth it? How can anyone find out, what Samsung has planned?I guess I don't want the behold II issue to happen on this phone.

Usually when I am charging or not using it the battery temp remains around 85F but when using it for a little bit it will rise to around 99F and the hottest it's gotten was around 104F.
What is your average battery temperature? When in use (surfing the web, etc.)? It seemed like the first few days my unit stayed pretty cool but now it is getting a little warm after only a few minutes use. It can get as cool as 28C when not in use, but has gotten over 40C with lite surfing/use. Normal?
I have looked at all my apps and nothing seems to be running out of the ordinary. The only thing I am not sure of is in the app "spare parts" under network usage I have a top bar that says "0" and it is full. When I try to click on it for more info it force closes. Does everyone have this (is it normal) or is it something I need to check into further? Anyone know?

I am averaging only about -96 dBm in my home. This is significantly lower than my EVO on Sprint. On the other hand, 3G for data is good - 3-4 bars. What is everyone else averaging for dBM on the phone/voice, is it possible I have a bad unit?
